Dus Bahane to love Abhishek
On his 32nd birthday we look at 10 performances AB Jr should be proud ofIt must be tough finding your own space when anything you do is bound to be considered inferior to your famous father and wife. Come to think of it, the odds have always been against Abhishek Bachchan from day one. One may argue about the number of chances he got thanks to his last name. But there is also no doubt that Abhishek Bachchan has consistently managed to improve over his weaknesses. And in comparison to other struggling star sons, AB Jr is certainly a cut above. As Abhishek Bachchan turns a year older on February 05, 2008 we look at 10 performances which prove why the guy deserves more. And with Delhi-6 up for release, we only hope 2009 is bigger and better for Bachchan Jr.
1-Dostana (2008)
His most acclaimed performance in a long long time. Like him or hate him, it takes some guts to pull off what he did in Dostana. Abhishek took on the tougher act of playing the effeminate gay guy committing near hara-kiri for his tough image. But even when he has to run into John's arms, this Maa Da Ladla does it with style.
2-Guru (2007)
When Mani Ratnam sketches an author-backed role, there's little margin for error. And Abhishek Bachchan delivers what is required. From changing his look to modifying his dialogue delivery to suit the character's age, the effort shows. Had a hockey coach and art teacher not spoiled his party at the awards, Guru was his best shot at bagging the Best Actor prize.
3-Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006)
In this overlong tale of infidelity Abhishek Bachchan comes out tops. In a film where couples look totally clueless about why they want out of their marriages, Abhishek's is the only convincing character. Playing the ideal husband, he is so good that perhaps for the first time die-hard SRK fans also didn't like him getting the girl in the end.
4-Bluffmaster (2005)
As the smooth talking super chor Roy Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan is at his coolest best in this one. Eventually beaten at his own game by girlfriend Simi, Abhishek's smart one-liners are the highlight of this film. We wish he is roped in for a version of Catch Me If You Can sometime in the future.
5-Dus (2005)
If a song clicks it can do much more than a dozen films put together. That's exactly what the title track of this otherwise silly film did for Abhishek. From an expressionless bore Abhishek was suddenly uber cool. It was a brief time when Abhishek and his retro-sexual charm were a serious threat to Hrithik's popularity.
6-Sarkar (2005)
RGV arguably captures Abhishek's face better than anyone else. In one of his most dramatic performances, Abhishek's ode to Pacino's Michael Corleone is just perfect. From being a laid back youngster to taking over Sarkar's mantle Abhishek does a remarkable job of the transformation. Sipping tea in the last shot he makes you want more of him as Sarkar. Sadly he got a raw deal in the sequel with his thankless death scene.
7-Bunty Aur Babli (2005)
Small town boy with big city dreams, Bunty sees no harm conning scoundrels who have no morals. Be it his crackling chemistry with Rani Mukerji or matching steps with father and wife in Kajrare, Rakesh alias Bunty is a complete performance. Watch him mimic his father's Agneepath pose and voice in the hotel lobby scene.
8-Phir Milenge (2004)
Another underrated performance. As the novice lawyer who fights Shilpa Shetty's lawsuit, Abhishek Bachchan plays it funny yet sensitive. Ironically it released on the same Friday as his first blockbuster Dhoom. While the former failed, the latter was a foolproof package with enough octane to zoom its way to success.
9-Yuva (2004)
His portrayal of an angry young bad man made people sit up and take notice of him for the first time. Box-office success of course came in a little later with Dhoom. Just for kicks, watch him beat the shit out of Vivek Oberoi in the hospital. Unapologetically cruel, Lallan Singh was a wife beater with sex appeal. Don't believe us? Ask Rani.
10-Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003)
Part of his dozen flops, this performance unfortunately went unnoticed. Sooraj Barjatya's misadventure into the Karan Johar School of Romance is watchable post intermission only because of Prem No 2. But Prem No 1, Bebo and the parrot were so busy hamming it up, too much damage was done for Abhishek to add any value to the film
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ABHI!
