Inspired by Chances Are Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om is inspired by 1989 Hollywood movie Chances Are directed by Emile Ardolino and starring Cybill Shepherd, Robert Downey Jr, Ryan O'Neal, Christopher McDonald and Mary Stuart Masterson. In the original, Christopher McDonald is happily married to Cybill Shepherd. While on his way home to celebrate his first wedding anniversary, he meets with an accident and is reborn as Robert Downey Jr. He then falls in love with his own daughter (Mary Stuart Masterson). He remembers his past when Mary Stuart Masterson invites him home. By now his wife has grown old and of course, fails to recognise him.
Om Shanti Om, which stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, is about reincarnation as well. Here, Deepika is a huge star of the 1970s and Shah Rukh Khan a junior artist. Both fall in love with each other. However, SRK gets murdered. He is reborn, and the story shifts to the present day where he goes in search of his lost love.

Inspired by White Knights Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya is inspired by a short story, Le notti bianche (White Nights) written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and made into a film in 1957 by Italian director Luchino Visconti. In 1971, French director Robert Bresson transformed the fable into a big screen movie, Quatre nuits d'un reveur (meaning Four Nights of a Dreamer) followed by another remake White Nights in 2005 by director Alain Silver. The story (told over four days) is about a girl, who falls in love with a stranger and proposes marriage to him. He refuses citing lack of funds, and promises to come back after a year to marry her. A year passes without any word from him. One night, she meets a stranger and tells him her story. The stranger is attracted to her, and finally tells her on the fourth night of their meeting. And then, her first love returns.
Whether Saawariya, which stars debutants stars Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor follows the same plot, we'll have to wait and see.

Inspired by Aaina Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag is inspired by Tamil movie Aval Oru Thodarkathai which is, in turn, remade as Aaina (1977), by K Balachander. The film starred Mumtaz, Rajesh Khanna, A K Hangal and Nirupa Roy. The story goes like this: Mumtaz's father, a Brahmin priest, has a large family to support. One of his children (played by Mumtaz) falls in love with Rajesh Khanna, who belongs to a lower caste. Denied Mumtaz's hand in marriage, Khanna then joins the army where he dies. Tired of poverty, Mumtaz's mother tries to poison her children but stops when Mumtaz intervenes. Mumtaz then goes to the city to earn a living. Once there, she finds it difficult to secure a decent job and resorts to prostitution. Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag, starring Rani Mukerji, Konkana Sen Sharma and Abhishek Bachchan, shows Rani and her sister (Konkana) trying their best to survive in Benaras. Rani then undertakes a journey, which ends in prostitution, to ensure that her sister gets a decent education.
The only difference here, is that Rani's lover is alive.

Inspired by It Happened One Night Jab We met has a lot of inspirations -- 1934's It Happened One Night by Frank Capra starring Clark Gable Claudette, Walter Connoly, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi by Mahesh Bhatt starring Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt, Chori Chori (1956), Solva Saal (1958), A Walk In The Clouds (1995) and Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha (1998). Whew! Jab We Met is directed by Imtiaz Ali and stars Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur. It is a story of a girl who runs away from her home to marry her boyfriend. On the way, she meets another boy who promises to help her unite with her boyfriend. At first they can't stand each other but eventually, they fall in love.
But a promise is a promise, and the boy drops her off at her boyfriend's place. You'll just have to wait for film to release to find out what happens next.
