A Journey of Love
Chapter 1 "The promise"
Prachi had woke up early that morning. She not only had an important meeting, but also had to see her father's doctor. Recently, her father was diagnosed with cancer and for the past few months, he had been staying at the hospital. Last night Dr. Sharma had called and asked her to come and meet him. He had some good news concerning her father.
After taking a quick shower, she looked over her files while having breakfast and then left for his place. As she drove to his house, she tried calling him, but at her surprise, it was switched off. For the first time in her life, he had actually switched his cell off. He was probably looking over some last minute details as it was an important deal for their company.
Parking her car in front of his house, she went straight in and found everyone at the breakfast table except him. "Hello Uncle'hello Aunty"
"Hello beta'why don't you come and join us" said Naina aunty, his mom
"Its okay aunty'I already ate'by the way were is my dear friend'don't tell me he is still sleeping'we have an important meeting today"
"Prachi di'bhaiya left long time ago'in fact even I was surprise that he woke up that early'" said Sukriti as she finished up her breakfast.
"Oh'okay'he must already be at the office'I'll take a leave then'"
"Prachi beti'drop Sukriti at college on your way as her car broke down yesterday'and also come back at night'I'm cooking your favourite"
"Okay aunty'c'mon Sukriti'lets go"
As they left, they heard Mishraji's voice from behind "Prachi'make sure you get the deal'I know both of you will do fine'good luck beta'"
After dropping Sukriti at college, Prachi went straight to work. As she entered the office, she asked Anjali, their personal secretary, about him. But was surprise with her answer.
"M'am'Sir had come in early morning but left soon after'I can call him if you want"
"No'its okay I'll do it'but did he leave any messages'" asked Prachi and Anjali had simply nodded a no.
"Okay then'make sure everything is on time for the meeting'I don't want any mistakes" she said and entered her office.
Not quite understanding his sudden disappearing, she sat in her office. Picking up the phone, she called him once again, and just like earlier, it was switched off. Keeping her head calm, she reviewed her file. Even if he was not here, she would have to go through it. And if he actually didn't show up, she would make sure she gave him the proper punishment for leaving her at the last minute.
After a while, Anjali came in and informed Prachi that the meeting was about to start in 5 minutes. Before, she left she had tried to reach him once again but as always it was still switched off. Taking a deep breath, she headed towards the conference room. She knew she was going to be fine. After all, they had gone through it together last night.
Once in the conference room, she took the head chair and listened to the mangers. She then proposed her theory and was pleased with the response she got. After all it was her idea and till now they had all worked out without any problem. As she continued with her explanation, she couldn't help herself from stealing glances of the door, to see if he was anywhere around. She knew he was fine, she felt it. He probably just forgot about it. It was something that was happening often nowadays and she knew the very cause of it. She would have to deal with him and his problem after the meeting.
After a couple of hours, Prachi came out with from the conference room all satisfied. They had got the deal, it was half signed and they needed to go abroad to sign the other half. She had done her part; he would have to do the abroad part. Giving specific orders to Anjali, she left to see her father. Only after that, she would go find him.
Since there wasn't any traffic on the road, the drive to the hospital was quite fast. She greeted all the doctors and nurses on her way to her father's room. She was now very much familiar with the staff as she would come and spend her evening here at the hospital.
As she entered her father's room, she found him sitting up on the bed reading the newspaper. "Hello papa'how are you feeling today" she asked as she sat beside him on the bed.
"Much better'in fact I feel perfect" he said as they heard a knock on the door and saw Dr. Sharma come in.
"Prachi'I'm glad to find you here'as I told you last night, I have some good news for you'"
"Yes Doctor"
"Well Prachi'your father's recent reports shows that he is fully cured from the cancer'and you can take him home in a few days'"
"Oh my god'oh my god'Thank you sooo much doctor'thank you" said an over excited Prachi as she hugged the doctor.
Going back to her father, she said "You see papa'I told you nothing is going to happen to you'God is not that cruel'He has taken away my mom from me when I was young'He wasn't going to take you from me'"
Inder's eyes had filled with tears as he heard his daughter talked. Only if she knew. As Prachi saw tears in her father eyes "Now'why are you crying'don't you want to come back home with me" she said and wiped the tears with her fingers.
Hugging her tight against him, he said "I do'its just that I have seen you happy after so long'that it fill my heart with happiness"
"Oh papa'don't be too emotional'you will make me cry'but you know what happened today" she said and then went on explaining everything that had happened. Inder was happy with his daughter's achievement but was mad at him'how could he forget about the meeting.
"I'll go find him now'I'll see you tomorrow" she said as she placed a soft kiss on his cheek.
But as she was about to leave, she heard her father say "Tell him to come and meet me'alone"
Turning around "why alone" she asked.
"Because I want to scold him'this is not why me and Mishraji merged our companies'we want both of you to work together'"
"Okay papa'I'll let him know" she said and then took a leave. When he wasn't home, nor in the office, there was only one place he could be'and she knew she could never go wrong on that. It was their place, whenever they needed to be alone, they would go there.
Sitting in her car, she drove for a while until she reached near the beach. Parking her car, as she climbed the small cliff, she saw him sitting staring at a picture. Slowly walking up to him without making any noise, she took the picture out of his hand and started to run.
"Prachi'Prachi give it back to me'" he shouted and ran after her.
It didn't take him long before he caught her from behind "Now'give me back the picture"
"Milind'let go of my hand'c'mon wont you even let me see'I know its her'Ayesha, the girl you have fallen head over heals for'" she said and soon he let go of her
"How do you know'" he asked curiously. He hadn't said it to anyone yet. He was planning on saying it to her but she somehow always figured everything out.
"I know'I have my sources'but now tell me why didn't you show up for the meeting'I had to do it all by myself'but I still managed to get the contract'"
"It was today"
"No' it was tomorrow'you know what we should have named our company P&M instead of M&P'" she said teasing him
"Prachi'I'm so sorry'Its just that"
"That you got distracted with her" she said as she looked at Ayesha's picture. "She is beautiful Milind'when are you going to tell her"
"I would'only if I had the chance to meet her again'you know that she is in London studying medicine'"
"Yes I know'and I also have a solution to it'you know the contract we got'its only half finalized'the other have you have to go to London and finalize it" she said smiling at him.
"You know how I much I love you for this'"
"Yes'.yes'now give me your wallet" she said extending her hand.
"Why?"
"Milind'just give" she said and he didn't argue anymore. Taking it from him, she opened it and saw her picture with him. It was a picture they had taken back at college. When she was about to take it out, she heard him say "What are you doing"
"I'm taking it out'so I can put Ayesha's picture'"
Taking the wallet from her hand, he said "Are you crazy'Prachi'I may love Ayesha'but that doesn't mean she will take your place in my life'In fact no one can ever take your place'Prachi I have known you all my life'and that no one can change'" he said placing back the picture at its right place.
As they sat beside each other, they admired the view of the ocean from above. It was only after a while that Prachi remembered the good news. Once again, all excited she said "Milind guess what'papa is fine'I saw the doctor today and he told me that papa was free from cancer'isn't that just perfect'I can't wait to bring him home'"
"That's great'now I can finally see you smile" he said putting his hand around her shoulder.

The next morning, Milind went to meet Inder. However, he didn't understand why he asked him to meet him alone. What was so important that Prachi couldn't be around? Putting the thought aside, he drove to the hospital.
As he entered his room he took his blessing and sat beside him on the bed "Uncle you have asked to meet me'"
"Yes beta'but first promise me that you won't tell Prachi anything about this'"
Even if he didn't like the idea of hiding something from Prachi, Milind gave his promise to Inder. "Milind beta'I'm dying and I need you to promise me that you will take full care of my daughter'"
"Uncle'what are you saying'yesterday Prachi spoke with Dr. Sharma'you are fine and we can take you home'"
"No Milind'you don't understand'I asked the doctor to'to lie for me'I'm not fine"
"But'"
"Milind beta'I don't what to see my daughter unhappy during my last days'you don't know how happy she was yesterday'her smile is still in my mind'I know its wrong'but believe me it's the best think'I even talked with your father'I just need you to promise me that you will take care of her'"
"Uncle'"
"No Milind'just promise me'"
Taking a deep breath, not knowing what exactly he was doing he said "I promise uncle'I give you my word I won't let anything happen to her" he said taking Inder's hand in his. He didn't need to promise him for that. Milind knew that he could never let anything happen to her.
After a while, even Prachi had come to the hospital. She didn't imagine Milind would show up that early, nonetheless was happy to see him.
"So papa'did you scold him properly'did you tell him not to leave me all alone"
"Yes I have'and he has promised me that he would never'leave you alone" he replied looking at Milind and he understood the message as he nodded.
Much later as Milind and Prachi left, Inder wondered if they would one day realize the love between them. They had taken each others friendship for granted that they couldn't see anything beyond it. He knew and felt that they were meant for each other'but it was up to them to figure it out. He only wished that they would realize it before it was too late, before things would take a different turn.
