Chapter 2 "The Birthday Promise"
It has already been a week that Inder has returned home. Even if he was dying from inside, seeing his daughter happy was enough to take away all his pain. Ever since he came back, Prachi was always by his side and Inder never complained knowing that these moments would be his last moments with her. He was going to cherish every single one of these moments.
Prachi had become like a little kid. She had missed her dad so much over the past months that now she was unable to stay away from him. The only time she would be away was when she had to go to work. If it was in her hand, she wouldn't mind not going either, Milind was there to look after it. Lately, Milind was a little absent minded but she knew that he would never do anything to hurt their company. She had complete faith in him just like he had in her.
Milind, on the other hand, didn't how to digest Inder's news. Ever since that day, every time he saw Prachi with her dad, he felt sad and guilty. Sad because he would soon leave her and guilty because for the first time in his life, he was hiding something from Prachi. The only way he kept consoling himself was by saying that it was all for her good.

That morning, when Inder woke up, he wasn't feeling well, but when he saw Prachi coming to his room, he tried to act as normal as possible.
"Good morning papa" said Prachi as she kissed him on his cheek and went to open the curtains.
"Prachi beta, drop me at Milind's house today before you go to work…ever since I came back only they have come to visit me…today I want to go and give them a visit" he said as he wanted to go and see his doctor without Prachi knowing.
"Ok papa as you wish…but at night I'll bring you back even if uncle insists you to stay…because if you stay then I would have to stay…and if I stay then Milind will keep on bugging me all night"
Inder laughed at his daughter, both Milind and Prachi were grown ups now, but sometimes they both acted like little kids. "Ok baba, I won't stay…" he said and went to freshen up.
As told, Prachi dropped Inder on her way to work. Once Prachi was gone, Inder and Mishraji went to see the doctor. Mr. Sharma examined Inder and told him that at the end stage such symptoms happen. His only advice was that he takes his medications on time.
"How much time to I have left" he asked the doctor
"One month or two months max…" the doctor replied
As Inder was leaving the doctor's office, he asked his friend if he was doing the right thing by hiding the truth from Prachi. She did deserve to know but she would be heartbroken and this was something he was unable to see.
"We are Inder…we are doing the right thing. She won't be able to handle the truth we all know that"
"Then what will happen when I leave…what will happen when I die"
Mishraji looked at Inder and simply answered in a low tone "I don't know…I don't know my friend"
*****
Prachi entered their office and saw Milind busy with something. "Good Morning" she screamed from her desk when he didn't notice her.
"Good Morning to you too" he said all smiling
"Someone is in a good mood" she said walking up to him. "So may I know why?"
"I'm going to London…you know to finalize the other half of the deal"
"Hmmm, I see then…So tell me why are you happy…because we are going to get the deal or because you are going to London to get the deal" she said. She always enjoyed pulling his leg.
"Both…you know London is a beautiful place and…" he was saying when Prachi interrupted. "Oh stop it Milind…London is a beautiful place because…ummm let me think because someone name Ayesha lives there"
Milind simply shook his head and smiled at her. She was impossible at times but he loved her for that.
"So when are you leaving" she asked
"Tomorrow morning"
"Tomorrow???...but…"
"But what….is there something important tomorrow" he asked seeing her reaction.
"Its my bir…" but she didn't continue. When he didn't remember, then there was no point. How could he forget about it? He has never forgotten about her Birthday? Since it was his first time, she told herself that she would forgive him, but even then she couldn't help herself but feel sad.
The entire day, Prachi's mood was off. She simply couldn't come over the fact that he has actually forgotten about her birthday. Was it because he was in love that he has forgotten about his friendship? Was she being pushed aside all of a sudden? Then again, she pushed all these negative thoughts away. Milind was not going to let anything happen to their friendship. He just forgot, he must have a very good reason behind it she told herself.
Milind, on the other hand, enjoyed seeing her like this. He knew why she was acting like this. He was leaving tomorrow and it was her birthday. She thought he had forgotten, but she should know him better. He would or rather he could have never forgotten her birthday. He has his plans, until then he was going to enjoy watching her sulking face.
Later that day, when it was time to leave, Milind like always asked Prachi to come with him. Even if they would come in separate cars in the morning, they would always go home together. Milind would always drop her home on his way.
"I have my car" she said
"Didn't you have your car yesterday, or the day before, or even the day before that…"
"That was yesterday…today I don't feel like" she said
Milind smiled at her childishness as he saw her drive just by him. He went to his car and drove behind her. They both came home at the same time.
Naina, Milind's mom as soon as she saw both of them, asked them to freshen up as food was being served.
Milind was already seated when Prachi came downstairs. There was a seat next to him, but she went and sat beside Sukriti. Sukriti looked at Milind and understood that something was wrong between the two of them.
"Prachi di, if you don't mind…I have a friend coming over dinner tonight…she lied and continued "so can you please sit beside Milind bhaiya…" and Prachi nodded
"Sukriti, why didn't you tell me that your friend is coming…I would have made something special"
"No mama, it wasn't planned…she just called a few minutes ago" she said trying to cover up her lie.
Prachi, as asked, went and sat beside Milind. All of a sudden, she felt stupid. Why was she acting like this? She wasn't a little kid anymore. Birthdays come and go. She shouldn't let something stupid like this come between them. He had forgotten that's it, she would simply have to give him a good punishment.
While having dinner, Milind every now and then would steal food from Prachi's plate. And every time she looked at him, he would say that it was easier to take it from her plate than the main plate. His hand couldn't reach for it.
Everyone at the dinning table smiled looking at them wondering when they would finally realize that they are more than just best friends. Inder prayed that it would happen soon, as he hoped he could see his daughter settled before he died.
Later that evening as Prachi and Inder were leaving, Milind called her from behind. Finally he remembered she thought.
"Prachi, don't forget to come and pick me up tomorrow…you would have to drop me to the airport" he said and Prachi simply looked at him, her smile disappearing.
*****
Later that night, Prachi was lying on her bed reading when her cell rang. It was already past midnight. Who could it be?
"Hello"
"Is this Prachi Shah"
"Yes…who is this calling" she asked
"This is from City Hospital, do you know any Milind Mishra"
"What happened to Milind" she said getting up from bed.
"He has met with an accident and your number was the first one on his phone…"
Before the doctor could say anything else she said "I'll be there in 5 minutes, please don't let anything happen to him" and rushed out from her house.
Never in her life did she drive this fast. As she arrived to the hospital, she ran to the front desk and asked for Milind Mishra's room.
"Room # 304" said the nurse.
Running up the stairs as fast as she could, she reached the third floor. Walking up the corridor, she spotted room # 304. However, as she entered, it was all dark. When she opened the light, she saw a big poster saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRACHI. The room was decorated with balloons and garlands of all sorts of colours. It is only then that she realized all this was a big joke.
"Milind, where are you…I'm going to kill you…you stupid" she said and he came out from behind the curtains with a small cake.
"How was my surprise" he asked
"Don't you ever do that again…Do you even know how scared I was"
"I won't" he said holding one of his ears. "But now come and cut this cake and make a wish"
Prachi blew the candle and wished for everyone's happiness. If her loved ones were happy then so was she.
As they were both enjoying they cake, Milind said "You thought I forgot didn't you"
"Nooooo"
"Then why were you so moody all day…admit it Prachi" he said and she simply felt embarrassed. She should have known that he would never forget her birthday.
Trying to change the topic, she said "So where is my birthday gift" and Milind looked at her "Wasn't this surprise enough for you" he asked and she nodded in negative.
"So tell me, what does my best friend want from me"
After a moment of silence, she said "A promise"
"A promise?" Milind looked at her all confused. "What kind of promise?"
"A simple one" she said and continued "Promise me that you will never let anything happen to our friendship"
"C'mon Prachi…I don't have to promise for that…"
"No Milind…We are now grown ups, soon we will have families of our own, we will have responsibilities…and I don't want our friendship to disappear in all this…so promise me that you will never let anything happen to our friendship" she said extending her hand.
"I promise" he said placing his hand on hers. Little did he know that this simple promise was not meant to last.
That was a really nice update. I feel really bad for Inder, he hasn't long to go and he adores his daughter so much, It's going to be hardest for Prachi when the truth comes out, will she be able to cope? Milind is in such a dilemma - must be hard for him to hide such a truth and not even tell his best friend- on top of that it's her father who she can't live without.
I wish Prachi had hit Milind really hard at the hospital, who does a joke like that?
Their bond is so strong, yet they just pass it of as "good friends' - Why does Milind have to think he loves Ayesha?
Thanks Heeba - really enjoyed reading this update.
