Another beginning that was grabbing is this;
"I was ten when my father died, and before that moment , that slap of silence that reset the clock, I can't remember much. There are some things, of course - fractals, shards of memory, sharp as broken glass."
The turn of phrase in those few sentences was artistic, and knowing that this was not a work of fiction by a memoir of sorts made the beginning even more gripping.
