Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevskii...
He doesnt mess around beating the bush...he directly goes to his work in the very first page itself..No loong boring descriptions...its like..Ok lets just get this straight!😉 almost as if the writer is saying "I am writing a psychological account of a crime, why should I go to any wordly decriptions..The mind is what interests me!"😊
the most terrific beginning...either u will give it up(coz u dont make head and tail of it mind u!) 😆 or u will absolutely be blown away..I mean what I say..When I tuk thid buk from the library, I was in a half mind, whether or not to read it..I read the first page n I just KNEW THat this was gonna be something! 😃

Atonement by Ian McEwan, just the way he portrays the girl Briony and her passion for the play she had written makes you want to read more to know more about her, her play and what will happen with her.

I do not have a favorite beginning to a book, but my favorite book of all time is "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. It is a story of a poor Chinese farmer who rises to wealth and the challenges he encounters along the way...excellent reading if you are into modern Chinese history.

😊

Fav beginning line?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man, in possessionof a large fortune, must be in want of a wife.
(Pride and Prejudice)
Also, close contenders would be:
If music be the food of love, play on
(Twelfth Night)
So fair and foul a day
(Macbeth)

there have been a lot of books that I loved, but the beginning wasn't anything dramatic. However I think this is one of my favs:
When I was seventeen, my life changed forever. I know that there are people who wonder about me when I say this. They look at me strangely as if trying to fathom what could have happened back then, though I seldom bother to explain. Because I have lived here for most of my life, I don't feel that I have to unless its on my terms and that would take more time than most people are willing to give me. My story can't be summed up in three sentences; it can't be packaged into something neat and simple that people would immediately understand." - A walk to remember
I alos love the beginning of Pride and Prejudice

Book - The Rain Girl , Author - Herbert Jenkins

Incidentally, the title is what intrigued me and if that werent enough the title of the first chapter was enough to get me hooked - "Road to nowhere" and the first lines -

"Nature Discourages eccentricity!" The ridiculous words rang in Richard Beresford's ears as he stalked resolutely along the rain soaked high road.

This was it and I knew I was taking this book. The title itself had me dropping the book into my shopping bag , and the curiosity that filled me when I read hte first lines just made sure, I didnt part with it!

It remains till date , my favorite read and am sure it will always be!

The little incident of how I chanced upon the tattered old copy of this book in a second hand book store beanth a humongous pile of literary books is something I'd love to tell sometime, but it was like the book was waiting there for me to come there and take it home and read it!

No other explanation comes close!
