A Tear In the Wind
Bani stood at the window watching the sun setting in the horizon. The sky became red, from its after glow and Bani sighed. This is a scene she loved to watch everytime given an opportunity if she happened to stay in the room, her room, it was not the best room in the house but it had the best view. Tomorrow is another day, she always thought when she saw the sun setting, she always looked forward to tomorrow with new hope and aspirations but not today. Suddenly her enthusiasm for tomorrow died. She knew the world was full of selfish people but she always believed that if you are nice to people, God looks after you and you will face no harm. Today she thought how wrong was her thoughts and how mistaken she was to look into the world through starry once. Once again her illusion was shattered. That time she thought it was childish but now she is matured. Why should she accept something which she knows she can never accept from her inner core.
Bani, she heard her mother calling out'..
Bani bit her lips'.this woman makes her helpless'.for this woman she become helpless at times.
Ha Ma'.
Keya socha beta tu ne'.
Wahi soch rahi hu ma'.
Didi intezaar kar rahi hai'.
Didi didi didi'.for everything her masi has done for them, today Bani felt she was a selfish women who would only see her well being, her, her daughter and her grandchild uske ageh kuch bhi nehi'.
Hmmmmmmm'.
Dekh beta, yeh chai pi le, aur niche aja'.Didi sabko dinner par bulaya hai, uske pehle tera marji janna chahati hai'thora dress change karke, fresh hokar ana beta'
Bani grinded her teeth. Marji kaise Marji, it is ha already without my saying so'.she fumed within herself'
Theek hai ma, mai ati hu'
Kiran put down the tea cup with a bit of noise, as if to say better hurry up, the tea will get cold and once you finish the tea, freshen up and come downstairs'Bani knew her mother's ways hence she waited for her to go out of the room, once her mother stepped out, Bani turned and picked up the cup. She held it between her palms, looked at the tea, as she sipped it, tears started flowing down her cheeks'.
Hey bhagwan mujhe shakti do'.she cried silently, remembering last time when she cried in this manner.
++++
Bani Dixit was always taught to be grateful for all she was receiving in life. She was taught from childhood that due to some big hearted people in this world she is having this comfortable life. Bani too never had complaints, of course god is not kind to all people but kind enough to her. Her mother Kiran always explained that bhagwan ki marji lekin achche ke saath achche hote hai, aur achcha hona hamare hath me hai, Bani therefore wanted to be good so that she has a better life ahead.
Frankly speaking Bani and her brother Daksh had a good life, they never starved and went to good schools, inspite of having lost their father very young, when Bani was six and Daksh one, their father's family washing their hands from any sort of responsibility. This was because of Masiji. Bani's mother's elder sister. Masiji was married to a rich man.
Mausaji had enough properties and shares to give him a steady income, well to say a good income that even if he did not do anything regularly, he could maintain a good lifestyle. Mausaji at times indulged in various business ventures. In some he made money and in some he gave money. Therefore Masi had to be very careful'baithe baithe khane se, ghade ka pani khatam ho jati hai'so she had tight rein over his purse'.nevertheless she allowed mausaji to indulge in certain whims'
When Bani's father passed away suddenly in a fatal bout of malaria, masiji took them under her wings. Bani and Daksh went to the same school as her only child Pia, who was elder to Bani by 5 years..everybody appreciated Masi's gestures. Bani wore the clothes from uniform to shoes, which belonged to Pia, Daksh being a boy got separate set. Bani did not mind as most of the clothes were in good shape and at that young age she did not learn to think otherwise. Once for twice in case she happened to ask, her mother replied, itne achhe kapre phekna nehi chahiye, hum bhi aisahi pahenke bare huye or desh ke itne bachhe nanga ghumte hai, you have so many beautiful clothes. So Bani never really complained, when she grew about Pia's size, she wore her rejected clothes or clothes which masi thought not suitable for Pia except now Bani mixed and matched them to her liking or made minor alterations to suit her tastes.
Inspite of all these, Bani had a nice childhood. Masi and her mother managed the house. Her mother took care of the kitchen cooking all meals, Masi took care of the outside work. Ensured timely payment from the tenants, went to the bank made various fixed deposits, ordered rations for the house, visited Pia's school to plead with the headmaster to allow Pia to go through the next class, but after couple of years, the headmaster put his foot down, no amount of donation was going to help Pia to shift to next class, your daughter is not an idiot Mrs Mishra but she is also not super intelligent. She needs to do a bit of labour but unfortunately she is very lazy, the headmaster said'since you are a regular donator, I will keep Pia in school this is all I can do'.so when Bani caught up with Pia, Masi was happy in a way'.it will be good for Pia, Bani tum dono ek saath parna'her mother also ensured Bani cooperated so when Bani studied, Pia filed her nails'Bani ensured Pia atleast completed her homework, Bani was relieved of her duty when she went to the next class. Masi said enough is enough, Pia will now sit at home, learn from private tutors for a change Bani got new pair of uniform and books. So when Bani reached higher classes, she studied through the night, her mother Kiran remained awake with her. Achchi tarah parai karo beta, she always said, agar mai pari likhi hoti'tumhare papa ke jane ke baad
Lekin ma humlog toh bura nehi hai, Bani asked her
Nehi beta humlog bura nehi hai, lekin agar mai naukri karti, shayyad hum teeno'.mere matlab, idhar humlog bura nehi hai, lekin kisi ka yehsan'.beta tu par, mai chai bana ke lati hu'.the words touched Bani'.though she was young, she could understand there is something which disturbs her mother'.
Though Bani treated Daksh as a baby, she was very friendly with her mausaji. She never saw that man to be serious in life. While her masi accused him for being a grown up child, he played with the children like one. He was there partner is all crimes, kept all their secrets and of course took them for movies behind masi's back. He was the one who robbed money from masi's purse when Masi slept to have chat and golgappe with them. Masi screamed and shouted but Mausa never seem to hear'.he always said he missed out a lot on childhood being the only son of rich parents so now he does whatever he was not allowed to do then'.
After her 10th board exams, Bani opted for science and they had a new teacher in class in the 12th. Their maths teacher went on maternity leave and Jai Walia entered the school, on temporary basis.
He was a young man, fresh graduate from college with a business degree too. Young, handsome and a fantastic teacher. The girls fell head over heels in love while the boys wanted to become his pals'.he taught them with authority and confidence and mixed with them as friend. Some girls purposely took time to understand certain problems and the girls who had not opted for maths wanted to change their options. During that time it was also learnt that he actually belonged from a well to do business family which had run into rough weather due to family dispute, fight amongst cousins and certain court cases. Infact Jai Walia had taken up this job as he needed to concentrate of court cases and other disputes'it was also learnt that he was waiting for sanction of certain funds which will able him to start business afresh'while the girls made nuisance of themselves Bani tried to remain calm and steady. She hid her fascination for him as unlike many of the girls she did not have rich or influential parents to impress upon him, to gift him expensive pens and ties, which many girls did. Inspite of this she noticed Jai Walia noticed Bani, he now and then stopped to ask her specially if she understood or needs another explanation and appreciated Bani's efforts when he gave the class to solve something difficult. After a month or so even Bani's friend's accepted that Jai Walia was indeed a bit partial to Bani. So are many other teachers, Bani had pointed out laughing, lekin Jai Walia bhi, her friends added much to the secret delight of Bani'.
Pata nehi Bani ko keya ho giya tha, she did not want to share the same with anybody. Daksh was anyway not interested excepted for the fact that like him too, Jai Sir is a supporter of Manchester United and Brazil in football, his age was not to understand these crushes, her mother was too busy taking care of the house and in spare time she either watched TV with masiji or snoozed in her favourite corner'except one day when Bani was helping Mausaji with his terrace garden and watching the horizon blankly'.mausaji asked, keya beti kaun hai, kiske bare me soch rahi hai'.
Koi bhi nehi mausaji'.she replied hurriedly'.
Sach me koi nehi, Mausaji's eyes squinted
Sach me koi nehi'.Bani smiled shyly'
Hmmm aisa hota hai, umar ka dosh, abh kuch din, kuch saal asahi hoga, mujhe bhi huwa tha'.it does not last for long and after sometime you feel foolish that you had happened to be in love with such person'.
Lekin mausaji'
First I feel in love with my English teacher, mausaji remembered, after few days she got married, I had cried that night, after few months she became pregnant, I wanted to strangle her husband for making her undergo the pain aur kuch din baad when she returned after the delivery, I found her too fat and by that time I was in love with my maths teacher, interest shifted'..but it was the history teacher or the drawing teacher, yes the new drawing teacher who wore sleeveless blouses, who soon conquered our hearts'.mausaji sat down remembering and Bani quickly watered the plants. Today Jai Walia will be taking a special class for some students who were having difficulties. Bani wanted to attend too for obvious reasons and she was not the only one''..
