Five reasons we'll miss Shah Rukh Khan this Diwali
Shah Rukh Khan may probably be a very unhappy man this Diwali. And why not, after all the most money he's made in his career so far has been during the festive season. Year after year, every Diwali SRK has churned out (quite literally) blockbuster films. With last year's Diwali release, Om Shanti Om he showed Bollywood just how he can, almost single-handedly rewrite the box office history.
This Diwali though will be an exception. Shah Rukh Khan, it was rumoured, wanted to release Kuselan around the festival. But it will not be so. Of course, his Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi will release in the second peak season of the year – (tentatively around) December 12
Here's giving you five reasons why we and the distributors will miss Shah Rukh Khan this Diwali
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)
Just why has this film not been remade is a question that has plagued one for quite some time now. Honestly, there isn't another Bollywood romantic hero who has become as immortal as Raj Malhotra from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. He sang and danced into our hearts way back in 1995 and to this day he continues to do so in Mumbai's Maratha Mandir every day. DDLJ is currently the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. Perhaps it wouldn't surprise you if we said that the film has made over Rs 110 crore at the box office, would it?
Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)
It was a film that the industry insiders had written off. Indeed, Dil To Pagal Hai was tad unconventional for its times. But despite it all Dil To Pagal Hai raked in over Rs 50 cr at the box office. If there was anything that rubbed salt on the wounds of the film's critics was the fact that it got a 95 per cent opening. Trade pundit, Komal Nahata very cheekily wrote in an online column for rediff.com "Trade people (sic) called it a bomb, it ultimately turned out that their predictions had bombed!"
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a winner from the beginning. The love triangle between Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji and Kajol clicked and Karan Johar became a star the very weekend the film released. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai told the story of a young girl who unites her widower father with his college sweetheart. The sweet tale of romance between the 30-something Shah Rukh and the tomboy-turned-princess Kajol had the Johars laughing all the way to the bank, reportedly with a gross of Rs 100 cr! Although it didn't make a killing, Amitabh Bachchan's Bade Miya Chote Miya also saved the skins of the distributors this Diwali.
Veer Zara (2004)
Making a splash in the Diwali of 2004 was Shah Rukh Khan playing Veer, the air force officer. Needless to say, this Yash Chopra-directed love saga worked its magic at the box office. Said to have made over Rs 70 cr, the success of Veer Zara was noteworthy. But there was another film, which released on the same day – Akshay Kumar's Aetbaar. This film was made on a much smaller budget. Therefore even though it made far lesser money than Veer Zara, the producers weren't complaining. Incidentally neither Akshay nor Shah Rukh has a Diwali release this year.
Om Shanti Om (2007)
Industry gossip doing the rounds around the time suggested that the Shah Rukh Khan-Amitabh Bachchan being at its peak. If there was an opportunity for SRK to cement his rule over Bollywood this was it. So Shah Rukh Khan went all out to promote what seemed like the film of the century. Promotional activity of the film started as early as July. All requests from Sanjay Leela Bhansali to postpone the release were met with deaf ears. At the end the efforts paid off – Om Shanti Om went on to become the highest grossing movie in the history of Indian cinema.
Ever since, Shah Rukh Khan has laid low. There is little we see of him and hear even lesser. He stirred the hornet's nest recently at Katrina Kaif's birthday bash. And then by makjing a surprise entry at the premiere of Drona, Shah Rukh seemed to suggest everything's well between Amitabh Bachchan and him. Maybe, the King is coming out of his lair. What's next? We're dying to know!
