Hi all

I recently read the review of Meenakshi R. Madhavan's book "You are here". book in the news just becoz sex sells or is there a paradigm change in the social values of a young ,modern Indian woman of today? There she asking some question...I would like to quote here...

Does dressing,smoking ,drinking ,casual sex make a woman modern?

Why is it getting so difficult for young ,financially independent girls to go in for commitment in relationships?

Simply switch on Television and watch any of Ekta Kapoor's soaps /Reality shows to catch the change in Indian women??

In the Indian context , We belive women r pillars of support for their family ,when a woman strays the whole family structure collapses or gets affected.Indian women have the responsibility of preserving our culture and values and passing them on to the Gen Next....I think we loosing our culture slowly!

What things make a Women Modern!?

She has attributed a lot in ruining the image of Indian homes. Either the women is doing a rona dhona and useless sacrifice or is plotting against their family 😆

That is no way a modern womed. That is kekta women 😉

Modern women, i believe is one who is educated and does not have a typical mind set.

drinking/smoking etc is personal choice. Same as drinking and smoking does not make a man modern.

What is stopping young girls go for commitment...hmmmmmmmmmm.

Good that I got commited well before 😆

Man or woman - it's the way he or she thinks and acts with a progressive mind, being rational and not being rigid, makes him/her modern. Has his/her own way of looking at things and judging them, and not just follow the trend blindly to be one of "them".

On a serious note, a modern woman is one who defines herself and is commited to her goals - be it professional or personal or both - without feeling guilty.

A modern woman is comfortable with her feminity and is not averse to meaningful traditional values - with the stress on "meaningful" here. She could be 80 and clad in a sari and still be lot more modern than a 20 yr old in blue jeans. It's more to do with the thinking than outward manifestations of the so called "modern" life style. In so many ways my grandma and mom were lot more modern than many of my friends here in the States. There were proper segregation of duties in their homes (there still are at my mom's home. Unfortunately, both sets of my grandparents have passed away) and the respected each other for being the person they were rather than for their gender.

A modern woman doesn't have to shun all womanly things or embrace all manly things. She is comfortable wearing high heels, make-up, pencil skirt and long curly hair if she likes it or pants, sneakers and cute short bob-cut if that pleases her more. She is comfortable in her skin and dresses to please herself AND the ones she cares for.

A modern woman is lot more than what I wrote above and let's not forget that she is a human being first😊 She loves getting appreciated. So stop judging her too harsh and take some time to get to know her😃

You mean "good my wife committed well before" 😉😆

@ Vinu - the definition of modern keeps changing. There was a time when going to school was considered modern, then going to university, then going to co-ed... A few decades ago getting a haircut was considered modern 😕 and with each definition of modern, women were attributed the derogatory form. But with the passage of time, outlooks changed and people accepted it. Who knows in a few years, this would be considered saintly behaviour 😉 My point is - why is the burden of society on the woman alone? Why is a woman tagged "modern" or "traditional"? Socho socho 😛

The modern unambiguous middle age woman is well aware of her sexual allure but cannot live with it's implications. She wants magic but must settle for dreary assignations in hotel bars and we are never in doubt of the devastations that these sad couplings have wrought on her tired soul. This is a wholly believable woman who you could imagine meeting on a street and put her in an equally plausible environment. And there are those men, call them thugs, blunt and larger than life symbol of male sexuality run rampant that are crazy about their little wives but are thrown off by this inexplicable balance to the "modern" sorts.

🤢 If she was truly "modern", she wouldn't get in to situations she did not want in the first place. You sure you are not confusing a "lonely" woman with a "modern" one here. I am amazed to see how wrongly people judge a modern woman or how disgusting, at times, is their idea of what "modern" means!
