Mind if we call you Sir?

Recently Shahid Kapur was shooting at Pune's FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) for Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminey with Priyanka Chopra. While he was here, students of the institute persuaded him to talk to them about various aspects of filmmaking.

The students were keen that Shahid teach them the basics of acting. They wanted him to give them insights into emoting, and comedy. Shahid gave them tips on acting and the technicalities of filmmaking, during his one-hour break.

When contacted Shahid Kapur says, "Yes, I did meet these students while shooting for Vishal's film in Pune. They were keen that I share my experience with them. I spent about an hour with the aspiring actors, chatting with them informally."

What kind of questions did the students ask him? Shahid replies "I started working about four years ago and I did not have anyone to launch me in the industry. They could connect with me because I had to work my way up, just like they will have to, when they pass out of the institute.

I went through several auditions before I got a break with Ishq Vishk. They will, probably, have to do the same thing. They wanted to know how they should go about their career after passing out. They also asked me how I choose my films. It was interesting to know their thoughts.

Yogesh Shirke, a first year acting student, at FTII, says, "Although it was a very short interaction we learnt quite a few useful techniques from Shahid . He comes across as down-to-earth person. The first thing that we did was offer him a chair, but he simply sat down on the floor amongst us. He connected with us as a friend."

Yogesh adds, "We were surprised when we learnt that Shahid also aspired to join the acting course at FTII, but couldn't. That is when he moved on to Shaimak Daver's dancing troupe.

He told us that now he wants to move away from his onscreen image of the lover boy-next door, and is learning acting patterns from various art films."
