Smriti Mandhana and Palaash Muchhal had been preparing for a wedding that was meant to take place on twenty three November in Sangli. The event had drawn enormous attention because it brought together one of India’s most prominent cricketers and a well known music composer. However, the celebration collapsed suddenly when Smriti’s father was taken to hospital after a cardiac related health scare. Within a day Palaash too was admitted as he was said to be recovering from stress and a viral illness. As the wedding stood postponed, social media was quickly overtaken by claims that Palaash had been involved in inappropriate conversations with another woman. Screenshots that users circulated online added to the atmosphere of suspicion and anger. Reports also suggested that Palaash had cheated on Smriti with a choreographer a day before their wedding.

Around the same time Smriti removed her engagement photographs and proposal video from her accounts which led many to assume that something serious had happened. A few choreographers who had participated in the wedding planning were also dragged into the gossip cycle although they publicly denied any romantic involvement and rejected every allegation that appeared online.

Smriti has now addressed the matter directly. In a message shared on her social media stories she said that the constant speculation had made it necessary for her to speak. She described herself as a private person but explained that she needed to clarify that the wedding stands cancelled. She asked people to stop discussing the matter and requested space for both families so that they can process the situation in peace. Smriti added that her purpose has always been to represent India and that cricket remains her core focus. She thanked supporters for standing by her and said that it is time for everyone involved to move forward.

She writes: Over the past few weeks there has been plenty of speculation around my life and I feel it is important for me to speak out at this time. I am a very private person and I would like to keep it that way but I need to clarify that the wedding is called off.

I would like to close this matter here and implore all of you to do the same. I request you to please respect the privacy of both families at this time and allow us the space to process and move on at our own pace.

I believe there is a higher purpose driving us all and for me that has always been representing my country at the highest level. I hope to continue to play and win trophies for India for as long as possible and that is where my focus will forever be.

Thank you for all your support. It's time to move forward.

The families found themselves fielding endless speculation. Palaash’s sister Palak repeatedly asked fans and media to understand how emotionally exhausting the situation had become. She urged everyone to allow both families time to cope. In a similar response Smriti’s brother Shravan clarified that rumours about a new wedding date in early December were completely inaccurate and that the families had not finalised anything. Even with these statements the rumours continued to multiply and the conversation kept getting louder with each passing day.

Her statement brings an end to weeks of uncertainty and confirms that the highly anticipated wedding will not take place.
