I do not think that the dowry system exists the way it has been shown in Saat Phere. The marriages are lavish and a lot of money is spent on clothing, jewelery, appliances, and gifts etc., but I have never seen so much cash like 35 - 40 lakhs being given to the in-laws. Times have changed in India and grooms look for educated girls than for money.
Dowry system is abolished and a criminal offense in India, but now the girls are taking undue advantage of it. As per law, in-laws can be put behind the bars and cannot give any justification if a girl reports that she is being harrased for the dowry. So the girls use this law to their advantage to threaten the in-laws even if they are innocent.
