Big B is the real 'King' of Bollywood, says Akshay Kumar

Mumbai (PTI): Steering clear of speculations that the movie title 'Singh is Kinng' was an assertion of his box office status, actor Akshay Kumar whose recent films have raked in nearly Rs 500 crore worldwide, said megastar Amitabh Bachchan is the real 'King'.

"Bachchan has been in the film industry over over 35 years and he is the real king. There are many who are around for 15-20 years and like to call themselves king. There is only one king and he is Amitabh Bachchan. I am merely acting in a film called Singh is Kinng," Akshay said, without naming ShahRukh Khan, who is called 'King Khan'.He was speaking at a promotional event of 'Singh is Kinng' which will be released later this week.

Many in trade cirlces had commented that the title 'Singh is Kinng' was an attempt on Akshay's part to show that he was the "King of Bollywood".

To a question on whether his comments would fuel another round of speculations, Akshay said," I said what I feel. Even after 35 to 40 years in the industry, Amitabh Bachchan is a humble man. He folds his hands when he speaks. I have worked with him in seven films. If my comments lead to a controversy, I dont care."

Akshay, who is shooting in Los Angeles for Sajid Nadiadwala's 'Kambhakkt Ishq', specially came here for three days to promote 'Singh is Kinng'. He also participated in the inaugural show of Bachchan's world tour 'Unforgettable' in Toronto on July 18.

When asked whom he was referring to in a recent statement daring his detractors to come out in the open, Akshay said he had not named any one and would not like to do so. "The message has been conveyed to the person who needed to know," he added.

Mumbai, Aug 7, 2008: Is it the beginning of Akshay Kumar-Shah Rukh Khan war? The way Akshay Kumar talked yesterday about Amitabh Bachchan being the only king of the Indian film industry gives direct indication that his aim was Shah Rukh Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan is known as King Khan in the Bollywood for the sort of popularity he enjoys across the country and even beyond. He is mobbed like nobody else not only in India but across the globe.

The way he was mobbed by his German fans at Berlin Film show earlier this year was an indication of his rising popularity across the globe. All his shows across the globe get better response than anyone else.

Big B can be an exception. But other stars of his generation are nowhere near Shah Rukh when it comes to popularity.

Akshay Kumar gives good competition to Shah Rukh Khan and believes that Khans of Bollywood more importantly SRK hogs all the limelight. He has voiced his opposition to Khans several times in the past.

Akshay has been around in Bollywood for the past 17 years and has performed consistently. In the last two years he has been really riding the waves. For Akshay Kumar 2007 has been excellent, with back to back superhits: BhagamBhag, Namastey London, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiya. Akshay Kumar gave some of the best hits last year. He is no new age sensation but someone who has been creating waves for many years. For the past two years, Akshay Kumar has stirred up a high tide taking all of us in the wave of his superb performances.


Yesterday taking a swipe at SRK Akshay said, "In my opinion, the real king of Bollywood is Amitabh Bachchan".

He went on to add"He has been in the industry for the last 40 years while we have been here for 15 years only. To become a king, you don't need money and power. You must have positive energy and Mr Bachchan has that".n "I have done seven films with Amitji and he is so humble and down-to-earth".

Akshay knew that calling Amitabh the Bollywood king will create controversy and added, "If a controversy erupts from my statement, I don't mind. I really feel he is the king of our industry."

He again took a dig at SRK saying, "My competition is with newcomers, not with people of my age group".

His forthcoming film Singh in Kinng is going to open with record number of prints in the History of Bollywood. 1800 prints in all. Aamir Khan Production had launched its last movie Jaane Tu…Ya Jane Na with only 400 prints while Rs 400 million film Love Story 2050 was launched with 800 prints.

The controversy generated by his film Singh is Kinng may be a reason behind the large number of prints the film production house is going out with. Akshay Kumar's soaring popularity within India and abroad is another reason for the large number of prints.

I was and am happy that akshay finally getting his success. But why every actor is having problems with Shahrukh? From Amitabh, aamir, salman and now akshay..i won't be surprise if akshay too start his blogs. LOL!!!

Gosh stupid Media!! Singh is king is a movie, Akshay is a good actor but he is not the King of Bolly, Srk will always hold that position in my eyes.

Personally, I have two fav actors and they both are SRK and Akshay! I love them for diff reasons.

Well Big B never himself claimed it like many actors now a days do. And yes he rules bw to date too. How many actors of his calibre do u see, who have aged gracefully and adapted? He truly is a legend. But its sad that the younger gen of actors dont seem to learn his humility from him but drag his name to forward their own controversies, be it SRK or Akshay. I dont care. But pl leave him alone.

The media is just making this a BIG deal for no good reason, Akki didn't want to offend SRK in any way.
