Daughters are disappearing in India: ActionAid

London, June 21: Daughters in India are disappearing due to cultural preference for boys, according to prominent UK-based charity organisation ActionAid. New research by ActionAid and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) shows that the number of girls born and surviving in northern India compared to boys falls far short of normal expectations, and continues to slide.

The research has been published in a reported titled Disappearing Daughters.

It said that deeply entrenched discrimination against women has led to the survival rates of girls hitting an all-time low. With parts of society regarding girls as little more than economic and social burdens, families are going to extreme lengths to avoid having daughters, it added.

ActionAid and IDRCs research reveals that, despite policies to address girls rights and public information campaigns, sex-selective abortion and neglect are on the increase.

It alleged that although prenatal sex detection and sex-selective abortion was illegal, the law is not being enforced. Doctors, nurses and other medical practitioners were allegedly routinely violating the ban, performing abortions of female foetuses and benefiting financially.

It estimated that around 10 million female fetuses may have been aborted in India over the last two decades.

In one site in Punjab state, there are just 300 girls to every 1,000 boys among higher caste families, it says.

ActionAid says India faces a "bleak" future if it does not end its practice of cultural preference for boys.

The Government of India needs to visit this issue in real ernest. If this trend continues pretty soon there are not going to be enough females for all the males in India to marry. What then? Will the men be forced to fight pitched battles to get a wife? Will the available females have to become modern day Draupadis? Or will the Indian Government be forced to import young women for all the bachelors, to rectify this imbalance?

10 million, WOW! Another crisis!

I feel sorry for the people who are committing this folly; calling on their own nemesis.

I am going to get myself a baby girl. Maybe two; boys are over-rated!

Iske liye research.😲 Wasn't it a known fact already. But I don't know how the Govt. can do something other than directly intervening in peoples private lives. But then Human Rights activist will jump all over the country. And to be very practical, it's not very feasible also. It's the general mass who should come to their senses. And I don't understand what's with Punjab, Haryana and that region's boy craze. They have pathetically low ratios, around 800 girls for 1000 boys. 😕

Btw, aapka woh import ka idea bhi bura nahi hai as long as we get to choose the exporting country. 😃

By 2020, India a 'chronic' importer of foodgrain?

25 Jun 2008, 0141 hrs IST, Nitin Sethi,TNN

NEW DELHI: The UPA government could be breathing easy with experts predicting that foodgrain prices will cool down by the year-end when several key states go to the polls, but the impact of a neglected agriculture sector are bound to haunt the country for long. India could become a chronic net importer of rice and wheat by 2020 if the trends are not reversed.

Pointing this out, a yet-to-be-released report of ASSOCHAM has warned that India will have to increase its rice yield growth rates by 250% to ensure self-sufficiency. Simultaneously, by current trends, the country could fall short of 23 million tonnes of wheat by 2020 that it would need to meet through imports. The latter figures emerge out of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute's work.

Looks like the Indian Government's list of import list is growing longer 😉

This topic title always makes me feel as if I should find a matrimonial ad here.

Considering how we just dispose of the women so easily in Asia, I see a very interesting future of options for the world.
1)It is the future of many Draupadi's
2)We will see a lot of gay Asians. Please save those girls or else your son will have no choice but to find a boyfriend.
3) Mixed race marriages. Europe is having a higher population of women. Desi men must be licking their lips at the potential of foreign wives.
4) Reinstate slave trade so that the rich people can exploit the excessive male population.
