The two-month festival reaches its climax. It's fair to say that it's been a full-blown batting festival. Earlier this year, when India successfully defended their T20 WC title, they smashed three 250+ totals in their last four outings. That momentum has carried into the IPL - 65 200+ scores this season with a couple of innings remaining. Ten teams started with the same goal of winning the championship, each employing different strategies.
LSG were the first team to be eliminated and finished with the wooden spoon, which prompted Rishabh Pant to step down as captain. MI endured a similarly forgettable campaign with their seniors underperforming and only a slightly better NRR spared them from the last place. CSK played the entire season without their stalwart MS Dhoni and persistent injuries cost them dearly. KKR took over 20 days to register their first win, and despite a strong second-half comeback, they fell short. DC missed out on the playoffs for the fifth successive time as they blew hot and cold throughout the season. PBKS looked like an unstoppable force while sitting at the top on a 7-match unbeaten streak, but they crashed out dramatically after six consecutive defeats. SRH were one of the three sides on 18 points but they finished third and were knocked out in the Eliminator. RR started well, stuttered and then recovered to make it to the playoffs but even Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's heroics - a familiar trend this season - couldn't take them past Qualifier 2. Now, it's down to the two teams that finished in the top-two at the end of the group stage. Hello everyone and a warm welcome to the final of the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League. It's Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Gujarat Titans at the world's largest cricket stadium.
RCB vs GT this season:
Round 1, Bengaluru, April 24th - Sai Sudharsan's classy hundred was negated by blistering half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal as RCB comfortably chased down GT's 205.
Round 2, Ahmedabad, April 30th - With two wickets and three catches, Jason Holder seemed to be everywhere as GT bowled RCB out for 155 and then chased it down in under 16 overs.
Round 3 (Qualifier 1), Dharamsala, 26th May - RCB posted the highest score (254) in an IPL playoff game on the back of Rajat Patidar's magnificent 93* and then removed GT's top-three inside the powerplay to register a 92-run win.
Round 4 (Final), Ahmedabad, 31st May - WINNER TAKES ALL and to be crowned champions for the second time.
What's common between RCB & GT this season?
-- 'King' Virat Kohli & 'Prince' Shubman Gill: Two prolific run-getters who average 40 in the IPL. Not only are they their team's leading run-getters this season (600 & 722 runs), but are also striking at 160+ (highest SR of their IPL careers).
-- Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Kagiso Rabada: The two former Purple Cap winners are the leading wicket-takers this season (26 & 28 wickets) and have a strike-rate under 14. They have been super effective in the powerplay (16 & 19 wickets). Similarly, they've made a mark in the death overs as well (9 & 6 wickets).
-- Powerplay pattern: With the bat, both teams are scoring at > 9 RPO (9.75 & 9.06). With the ball, they have taken 33 wickets each at similar averages (25.45 & 26.39) and strike-rates (16.3 & 17.4).
-- Fielding: There is little to differentiate between the two teams in terms of catching efficiency (78.9 & 77.9).
