While many actors spend their entire lives chasing fame in Mumbai, one veteran star chose to walk away from the glamour of the film industry at the peak of his popularity. Having shared screen space with Salman Khan in the superstar's debut blockbuster and earned recognition through several memorable roles across films and television, the actor eventually decided that the spotlight was no longer where he belonged. Today, instead of navigating film sets and production schedules, he leads a quieter life in Bhopal, where he runs a small hotel, performs theatre, and focuses on personal happiness. The actor in question is Rajeev Verma.

In a recent podcast appearance, Rajeev Verma opened up about the reasons behind his decision to leave the industry and settle in his hometown, Bhopal. Reflecting on his journey as an actor, he revealed that the passion and excitement that once drove him towards acting gradually faded over time. What initially felt like a creative and fulfilling profession eventually became repetitive, leading him to rethink his priorities and the life he wanted for himself.
Speaking about the turning point in his career, Verma shared how the massive success of Maine Pyar Kiya unintentionally led to him being boxed into a particular image.
“In Maine Pyar Kiya, I played a businessman. After the film became successful, filmmakers began seeing me in a particular image. Once an actor becomes associated with a certain kind of role, people keep casting him in similar parts. I was repeatedly offered the same kind of characters.”
While typecasting is a common challenge faced by many actors, Verma admitted that constantly portraying similar characters began affecting his enthusiasm for the craft. What once felt exciting started feeling predictable, leaving little room for creative satisfaction.
Recalling that phase of his life, the veteran actor explained how acting slowly began to resemble a regular job rather than a passion driven profession.
“There came a stage when I stopped enjoying acting. I felt I didn’t want to do it anymore. It started feeling like the office job I used to do earlier — the only difference was that the cheque here was bigger. The excitement and satisfaction I once felt had disappeared. It had become routine work.”

According to Verma, these feelings did not emerge overnight. Instead, they continued to grow over several years before he finally decided to make a major life change. He revealed that even before leaving Mumbai, he had already started questioning whether he wanted to continue working in an environment that no longer brought him happiness.
“Five or six years ago, I returned to Bhopal. Even two or three years before that, I had begun feeling that acting had become routine and I was no longer enjoying it. Spending time with friends, attending weddings and family gatherings, enjoying life — all of that had become negligible. After a point, you start missing those things. You feel like spending time with your family, parents and friends.”
The actor explained that the decision to move back home was rooted in a desire to reconnect with the simple joys of life that had taken a back seat during his years in the entertainment industry. Rather than continuing to pursue professional ambitions, he chose a life that offered greater personal fulfilment.
Talking about his present life in Bhopal, Verma shared that he no longer feels the need to actively seek work in Mumbai. Instead, he spends his time doing theatre and focusing on things that genuinely make him happy.
“That’s why I came back. Now I mostly do theatre and enjoy life. I don’t have a great financial need anymore. I have a small hotel here in Bhopal, my children are settled, so now I do theatre and enjoy myself.”

Apart from discussing his own journey, Verma also reflected on how the entertainment landscape has evolved over the years. According to him, the glamour that was once associated with the film and television industry does not carry the same impact today.
“Due to OTT, more people are getting work but that era is gone when people would instantly recognise you because of your work. Recently, I was somewhere when a large group of tourists from Gujarat came over to take photographs with me. They spoke about the characters they had seen me play. But after all that, they asked me, ‘Sir, what is your name?''
Interestingly, Verma said he was not bothered by the incident. In fact, he viewed it as a compliment that people still remembered the characters he had portrayed, even if they could not immediately recall his name.

“I have no problem with that. If people remember the character, that is more than enough for me.”
Today, Rajeev Verma's story stands out as an example of someone who consciously chose contentment over constant ambition. While many continue to chase success and visibility, the veteran actor found happiness in returning to his roots, spending time with loved ones, pursuing theatre, and enjoying a slower pace of life. For him, stepping away from the spotlight was not an end, but the beginning of a different and more fulfilling chapter.
