Rishta Gen 1 was really good. Even after the inception of Gen 2, they retained the core characters of Naitik and Akshara. Gen2 lost its beauty somewhere along the way but the beginning was good!
Watching Gen 4 feels like watching a completely different show—so much toxicity.
As for MaAn, I think everyone expected a mature second-chance romance because Anupamaa had actually come out of an emotionally abusive marriage. After that, Anuj became more of Anupamaa’s yes-man than anything else. He doesn’t seem to have an opinion of his own anymore—imagine being a high profile business man and a millionaire.

Her daughter's college track made yeh rishta unwatchable for me atleast.

Yes, Gen1 and Gen2 were the only ones decent from the clips I have seen. Gen4 doesn’t even look rishta show. It just has the same name of the show, but the whole gen story and everything about it is so unlike rishta. Until Manish was there and Ruhi too, at least it still felt somewhat Rishta. Didn’t watch anuapama from the beginning. When I started watching it, anuj used to be upset at anu giving time and priority to Shah’s and her adult children. Then Maya came and Anuj behaved badly with anupama. So I used to feel bad for anupama as I didn’t see the beginning of the show. Shah’s baa and that father looked decent for me at the time as baa was nice to anupama 😭 Now I know how bad that baa is and her disgusting children too. They are all so 😒🤢
