2012 is often hailed as one of the best years for Bollywood — and rightly so — but 2016 deserves to be in that conversation too. It was a year that brought a rich mix of genres, fresh storytelling, and films that pushed boundaries in both content and form. From the progressive gender role-swap in Ki and Ka to the sensitive portrayal of homosexuality in Aligarh, and the tender complexities of family dynamics in Kapoor & Sons, 2016 was refreshingly eclectic. Neerja delivered a powerful, real-life tale anchored by a stellar performance from Sonam Kapoor, while Pink tackled consent and patriarchy head-on. Udta Punjab boldly addressed drug abuse in Punjab, despite censorship hurdles, and Dangal closed the year with a bang — blending sports, feminism, and box office dominance.
Also let's not forget Raman Raghav 2.0: it was one of Anurag Kashyap's best movies. I will never forget that scene where the antagonist's sister, just before getting butchered to death, is contemplating whether to go to the police or not.
