You're absolutely right. But Animal helped Ranbir earning incel fans and Chhava earned Vicky typical Hindutva fans.

More than the actors, its the movie itself which is the reason the box office has been big. Animal was vangas first movie after arjun reddy/kabir singh, the movie was heavily filled with shock value with a crazy lead character, just like arjun reddy, and people want to watch that.

Chaava is about a maratha warrior, Indian pride, against the evil mughal aurangzeb, so ofcourse it was going to do well.

Rk and vicky are good actors, but if they star in a film that people are not going to like, the film won't do well. For example shamshera for rk and the Great Indian family for vicky, movies which people didn't like or weren't interested in. Even bad newwz didn't do that well.

So actors have to be careful to choose a movie that is going to appeal to the wider audiences tastes nowadays. It's why movies based on Hinduism, patriotism, hyper masculinity are doing so well.

That's why rk is doing ramayana and animal park. Its why vicky is doing mahavatar

Actually, I think, it is both: the subject and the actor. I doubt that Animal would have had the same success with another actor in the lead ... and the intensity Vicky gave to Sambhaji is also a reason for Chhaava's success. In addition, Bobby in Animal and Akshaye in Chhaava also contributed to the success in an important way.

If the role has a competent actor, then yes it would still do well. So I disagree that these films wouldn't do well with another actor, more than the actors it's the film and subject/story that matters way more.

These are good actors, but they can't make a film into a hit that the audience isn't interested in or invested in

Only people like srk can run a film solely on starpower, we've seen that in pathan and jawan, the movies would not have worked if srk did not star in it as they were quite average stories. But even in srks case people did not enjoy dunki as much as those high octane action films, dunki did not make as much as them, so the movie subject does very much matter. And nowadays whats working is high octane action and violence, hyper masculine lead characters, Hinduism and patrotism/nationalism

Of course the subject matters (I don't/didn't deny that)...but often the subject can be interesting and good but it isn't 'the flavour of the season'...I think that one can't really predict the success of a movie for sure...one can assume it because of certain parameters. That's why I don't like hyperpraise done even before a movie is released. (I was quite sure that Dunki would not be a big success because it wasn't 'mass'...but I liked that SRK again did something different...and it was a good ensemble cast).
