I actually started with C dramas coz I literally ran out of stuff to watch on OTT platforms during lockdown.

A friend who was staying with me for 2 weeks literally arm-twisted me into watching my first foreign language show (Chinese show- The Untamed).

I ended up loving the show, then watched Love 020 and Put Your Head On My Shoulder. Once I got used to subtitles and Asian faces, I started watching K dramas.

And once you start Kdramas, it is like an obsession. Before you realise it, you have binge-watched 5-10 shows 🤣

What I love:

1. Gorgeous leads (I am v shallow when it comes to Kdramas and Cdramas. Leads gotta be gorgeous)
Maa, is that you?🤣

2. Limited episodes

3. Sweet story lines, I only watch happy shows

They have such great sci-fi/fantasy stuff as well! And they have a couple action-oriented ones that are a little sad, but mostly really funny (yes, I'm talking about Fiery Priest, I binged it with my parents in one sitting and then they took it off Netflix).

4. They do romance so well. Like 90% leads have great chemistry

5. Food: I love watching these people eat. They make the blandest food look so yummy. Itne mazze leke khaate hai ye.

Because Korean BBQ is the best!!! Also, the food is such an important part of Korean culture and I think it's really that they just want to share it all with the world. ❤️

6. The best friends: Kdrama leads have the most amazing besties. Makes me so jealous.

What I dont like:

1. Similar story lines: Once you have watched 10 shows, all romcoms seem the same.

Which is why you switch it up with different genres.

2. Sometimes the FL's aegyo is unbearable

3. Childhood friends trope: they need to realize not all leads need to have crossed paths in their childhood. Why are they obsessed with this? I swear the first 10 shows I saw all had this trope and I actually started thinking that this was a prerequisite for K shows.😆

It was cute in some shows, but I lost it when they showed it in Cinderella and the Four Knights. It's the same with mangas too, like, okay enough I get it. And I love the childhood friends to lovers trope, but this is not that.

4. Leaving every thing to the last 2 episodes. They literally drag episodes 9-14 and then suddenly realize the show needs to end in 16 episodes and put everything in the last 2 episodes. Ruins the show for me. They did this for Doctor Cha and Business Proposal, it annoyed me so much. They really need to pace shows better.

I think the purpose and mode of entertainment is different in both media.

In ITV, the purpose is to last longer on the screen, make more presence in front of the viewers, so as to get on the mind of the audience for a duration. Till the time your production house can get TRPs and can buy the time slot on channel, they keep on dragging it. As the deadline is not fixed, the story goes haywire and we get to see all the mess we are witnessing now a days.

In K-dramas, the deadline is fixed. The story is fixed. Just because the audience are enjoying it, they won't bring in different characters or turn the story to show something completely different than the original script or lose the grip of the story. The major difference.

Now if they have a grip on the story and tight deadline to showcase the story, it makes it crisp, bearable and it succeeds to hold on the interest of the viewer like me.

Most of the times, the content displayed in the K-drama is individual based. It displays the journey, struggle and success of an individual, in the most realistic way possible, which is instantly connectable and relatable.

The k-drama is mostly dramatic and not overdramatic which makes ITV unbearable most of the time.

The story that is based in K-drama involves more insight into the field they have based the show in, sometimes deep, sometimes overall details, making it more interesting and afresh to view as it look more obvious and real if the characters are developing their feels and having struggles in a day to day life and routine unlike in ITV which rarely shows such traits.

The bond shown in k-drama looks more real and relatable, unlike the great love and sacrifice and all the over the top mahaan banne ke traits of ITV shows.

The story there really progresses, characters grow, they bond, they fail, they succeed and most importantly they love. I barely remember a show in ITV that matched all these parameters, all in one show.

Maybe there are lot more points that come to my mind but I guess these many are enough already 😆

To all the more satisfaction, learning, growth, content and expectations from the reality,

Love,

The production quality/aesthetic of kdramas is much higher than what we see on ITV, and I think kdramas understand how to grow with their audiences and with the times in a way that ITV doesn't because to me, ITV has been stuck in the past for a very long time. Kdramas quality is better than ITV in all department…from casting, music, costumes, writing, editing ecc! I mean ITV won’t never give us something like Business Proposal or What’s wrong with secretary Kim?

I also think that ITV is kind of the only TV industry that hasn't figured out how to contain its stories. I know that there will always be a desire for daily soaps for people like my mother who are incredibly impatient, but I think the current generation doesn't have to sit every day or once a week to catch up on shows, which is why kdramas or OTT content is so popular because it's all binge-able. ITV writers drags a plot for months again and again! For a wedding track, they take like 1-2 months🙄 an episode worth 25 min is totally skippable between the music and close up shots! Actual epi is worth 5 min😆

Finite series in ITV would be much better I feel! 100-150 epi is better than ongoing KKB/YRKKH with never ending story and leap after leap! Still I feel ITV would be able to screw it up with their writing😆

The k-drama is mostly dramatic and not overdramatic which makes ITV unbearable most of the time. Agree with this. You can connect with the characters here and you feel with them. In ITV, after 100 plus epi the main characters journey has not even begun. And they use the most abused plot always wedding track anytime they want😫😫🫠 the marriage institution is a mockery as per ITV standard

God bless streaming and platforms like Netflix, Viki that manages to take us in a few seconds on a round trip to get to know a world different from the typical and regressive shows of ITV!

For real, most of the indian TV serials are stupid and over the top to be honest. Similar plots ( love triangle and EMAs are rage these days, really?!🤪) with senseless twists and turns shows lack of creativity and fresh script!

So last year I got curious about why K drama were such a hit and popular and started to watch them!
And let me get this straight, I was NOT a K drama fanatic, but it turns out I am…like literally I got

addicted to them. ❤️

I dare to say that K-dramas are the second best thing that happened to the world after Hrithik!☺️

Image

They deal with real problem and relationships (not just romantic ones between ML and FL - all human relationships) and have well-rounded characters who behave and react to things happening around them in realistic ways (side characters included).
The journey of falling in love is always so beautifully portrayed ,their first kiss is always captivating and all their scenes are just so adorable! You just root for them! You feel with them!
K-dramas have an edge in terms of narrative and character building: you will always find something new and different. This lacks big time in ITV who still run on saas- bahu, ghar ke drama and endless wedding tracks and parties!

The k-dramas range between legal and medical, between romance and school series, between fantasy and historical, between comedy and action. The productions houses gives real blockbusters tv dramas and movies with real quality scenography, engaging storyline, stellar cast and addicting OST ( Goblin’s ones is my top fav so far)

Among the K-dramas there really is something for all tastes. An incredible satisfaction even for the most demanding people who will certainly stumble upon the show corresponding to their most specific needs, ending up by trapping them in binge-watching and, at times, depriving them of life social.

Does the infamous "just one more episode" sound familiar?🤣 It happened to me many times

PS: feel free to suggest KDramas but mention why you liked it so much, that unique reason why a member should watch it rather than ITV😂

@Discussions of ITV vs Kdrama:

- Kdramas are wrapped up, edited and then aired. ITV shows are shot everyday while on air, have no ending in sight, story changes as per audience demands. This is the biggest problem. You should tell the audience how the story will go coz you are the writer, dont let the audience write the story.

- Stop rehashing the same stupid tropes and stop making Naagins and cheap copies of Vampire Diaries for heaven's sake.

- They need to stop with the OTT make up and loud characters (Gopi bahu's MIL comes into mind). Times have changed. Be real.

- In ITV nothing is normal. Either ML/FL are dirt poor or they are talking about 800 crore deals. Even Kdramas do that but they handle it so differently, it doesnt seem cringe.

But having said that: Soaps are different. I suppose Korea also has soaps, which we dont get to see. I saw a Kdrama and realized half way that it had 50 episodes. Wo koi Balaji show se kam nahi tha. It is on Netflix, I forgot the name (will update if I remember it).

We only get to see their shows. Even America has lame sitcoms which have been going on for years. 'Days of Our Lives' has been going on for 58 seasons and is still on air I think. (They have also used the plastic surgery trope enough times I hear, I haven't watched the show, just heard about it)

ITV's problem is we dont have a balance between shows and soaps. Our TV is dominated only by soaps. We need to have more shows with limited episodes. They are only now making those and releasing them on OTT. Koreans have been doing it for a while now.

Thoda fault lies with the audience also. YRF tried to introduce Rishta.com, Mahi Way etc but people rejected it. Rishta.com was adorable. But Sony tv kept changing the time slot every week. It was super weird. And they never renewed it for S2. If we had Netflix back then, I am sure Rishta.com would have got a few seasons
