Kartik Aryan said call in Bhool Bhulaiya 2 and it was actually kal (yesterday). I also disliked SRK and Ashwariya's Bengali pronunciation in Devdas. But I don't remember the words because it released many years ago.

Ever? All the bloody time these lot claim they're speaking Punjabi, but its actually just Hindi with a Punjabi accent 😅

There is only one mainstream actor who speaks it without the Hindi/Urdu mix... and that's Vicky Kaushal.

Once upon a time, mispronunciations really bothered me. But now I realize that mispronunciations are inevitable. Every language has its own unique set of sounds and syllables. When you add regional twangs and accents, most people grow up with a very set of pronunciations. That means that most people can be completely unaware or even incapable of making certain sounds. Many people are biologically incapable of rolling the r. Many people struggle with the standalone 's' sound either adding an "i" before or "h" after. Most people outside Marathi-speaking regions don't get ळ क्ष ज्ञ right.

And when you trace the history of language so-called "correct" pronunciations are still arbitrary anyways. It is just that a majority or a dominant group pronounces the word in one way and it stuck. Sometimes these stand the test of time and sometimes even the dominant pronunciation changes with human migrations. Americans and British pronounce the same words differently - showing that even correct pronunciation can be varied.

As long as the attempt is sincere it doesn't bother me.

But I can see how it can get irksome if the character is supposed to be of an ethnicity/linguistic culture and mispronounces things. A Bengali character mispronouncing multiple Bengali words can be annoying. Either the actor needed to work harder with their diction and accent coach or a native speaker should have been cast. But then you have desi Americans cast in desi roles in western shows who completely botch up desi pronunciations. Its authentic to them but inauthentic to desis.

It's all too complicated.

Thanks for writing a detailed answer. Yes, Bengali characters mispronouncing Bengali words is annoying. So, I think the makers should hire Bengali coaches for the actors so they pronounce the words perfectly.
