Mind boggling isn't it. Aliens always invade America. What must the aliens be thinking? Russia & Antartica too cold, India and China too many people, Japan nah lets not fight with Godzilla, Africa too skinny.....hmm America its whats for dinner.

Last weekend I convinced a friend to install Ubuntu on her old Windows computer which had started to frequently crash, now it runs beautifully. It made me think of an analogy for this whole debate here.

Standing up to America is like developing an Ubuntu to America's Windows. Let me explain.

America is like Microsoft in our world. It started out as a good service, it gave the world an operating system and software we needed. However, this pure profit driven growth grew too fast unchecked. America is still the best option out there just like the Windows based PC. Just like everyone buys Microsoft most people want America. However, when you look deep enough you see that you really are not always getting what you deserve. A lot of Microsoft programs are vulnerable, buggy, have excessive lines of bad code, do not allocate resources smartly, tend to crash and malfunction. Similarly America can do much better, resources are not allocated wisely, sometimes it can be downright bad for you, there is so much potential improvement. Bill Gates is a good hearted philanthropist who has given a lot to multiple charities, he and his wife Melinda are constantly involved in charity events. At the same time Microsoft is quite the greedy corporation. It charges high cost for software, forces you to rely on them, makes you upgrade and use their service. It is ripping of the average consumer continuously. America too is not all evil. The country is definitely involved in a lot of good charity and does many things to help the world. At the same time America too sometimes costs to much, makes people reliant on it and tends to rip off the average person.

Most of Europe is like the Apple's Macintosh. It has always existed on the side as an alternative, but never really became as big as America. Apple takes pride in being the better efficient and more innovative product but also is jealous of Microsoft's success. Europe views America in the same light. Unlike Windows where the PC is built by one company, software installed by another, third party software installed by another, the MAC is built top down by Apple with attention to every detail. The system is more stable, reliable, secure, uses resources smartly, functions much better and is better long run. America like a Windows PC has input from so many directions that it struggles with balance. Europe on the other hand is built more from within. Europeans have a stronger sense of national identity, they use resources to function top down supporting each other, functioning better and more reliably. The Windows PC remains the peoples PC while the MAC caters to a very small niche audience, Windows costs more in long run maintenance, MAC has a very high upfront cost that shuts of many people. MAC remains today a computer for those who can afford it, multimedia users who need it, a very closed group of people who at times can be snotty and geeky with their attitude. America remains more open to the world while Europe is a more closed guarded preserved culture. America costs people in the long run but easy access draws people. Europe taxes you highly upfront, but despite of long run benefits it keeps people away, it is not as desirable to get in. Europe still maintains the aura of elitist classiness, only for the wealthy or the artistes and dreamers who thrive on social system. Despite the richness and efficiency the snotty attitude can be off putting.

What the world needs is a Linux and Open Source Software to stand up to America and Europe of sorts. Linux OS and Open Source PC is low cost, reliable, secure, efficient, functional. The open source movement was developed by people who thought software should not cost so much, a community of developers and users can create, maintain and improve a product that has all the benefits of a good program without the cost. What the world needs is for the rest of the countries is to pool their resources, collaborate and function as a community to create a sustained system, that provides them everything they need without depending on USA.

Linux and Open Source will never replace MACs, Windows or other proprietary software but will always be strong contending alternative. Open Source has put checks and balances on Microsoft forcing to improve their products, make them better, stable, more functional and efficient lest they lose out. Open Source has put checks and balances on Apple forcing them to try and be more of a people's PC and trying to lower cost and expanding the MAC community. By standing up to America we will never eliminate their presence or lessen their power and scope, but we can make America improve so that it reverts back to values that treats the world fairly and keeps their dominance in check. Similarly it encourages Europe to make their benefits and systems more accessible to people and not be a closed elite society.
