Disagree …movies are still dependent on wom…openings are dependent on pr, hype etc …Which is why badhaai ho, pushpa , uri etc managed to get the collections that they did in the Hindi market despite not having great openings …
Long run of the film is still deemed an important factor in deciding whether it is a hit or flop
Even a film dependent on WOM needs to open at a certain level to be a huge grosser. Gangubai won't have crossed 100 Crores with an opening of 2 Crores or by only releasing in 500 screens.
Pushpa is one rare case because the movie had no competition. These films are still not that big Hits compared to KNPH, HAHK or DDLJ, which also didn't open huge but trended extremely well.
Also record breaking openers don't Flop easily unless the budget is too high or the film is completely rejected, which wasn't the case pre-multiplex era.
So using Abhishek or other failed star-kids of his gen to hype Alia is just nonsensical.
