Chapter 89
The Child and an Old Friend
āIf the Circle realizes you brought this child here, it wonāt bode well.ā
They talked in whispers. The air was tense. Haseena wasnāt expecting something of this nature to be the cause of her visit. She pursed her lips and stood up from the bedside of the sleeping boy, looking at Mandu with a sternness in her eyes.
I donāt wish for you to go through a similar pain again, but it must be done.
āHe canāt stay here.ā
Mandu grasped the sheets. Her nails began to tear through the delicate fabric. Seeing red, and not wanting to listen to anyone. She regretted calling Haseena there. She knew she would only say those words.
āHeās just a child. That woman tried to kill him!ā She hissed, eyes turning violet. Siddharth grasped her shoulder tight. āWhy canāt he stay here?!ā
Love, relax. We donāt want to wake him.
āHeās a Vitael.ā Haseena replied with continued sternness, though she remained calm in expression.
āHeās just a child. I will not say it again.ā
The little one was healing, but the fear that lay in the mind kept him tossing and turning. New environment and surroundings. The arguments certainly werenāt helping. Mandu couldnāt help herself. Not only was it the motherly instinct driving her this way, it was the guilt. Children didnāt have a sense of evil within them; it was taught and shaped by the world around them. If she couldnāt save her sister from falling, maybe she could save this child. She placed her palm on his forehead and stroked his hair until the tossing stopped.
āLetās take this outside. Please.ā Siddharth cut in, holding his hand up. Mandu turned away from Haseena and stormed out. She didnāt want to talk any more on this matter. The latter stood watching. Siddharth shook his head. āIām sorry, mom. You know how this subject affects her.ā
Haseena nodded. She was witness to that first pain, the constant wandering around their old home in shock just after being turned, a fake bundle of cloth and doll in her arms. It was difficult to recall how long she was in that state. But while the blanket and doll were long gone, the pain remained deep in her heart and mind. No matter how much she smiled on the surface.
āItās not good for her to get attached. This child could be a trap.ā She continued.
Siddharth pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head. He didnāt want to believe the child himself was malicious. He was also a victim. Over his body, signs of physical abuse and malnourishment. But the circumstances in which they found him were certainly worrisome.
āBut even I donāt find it right to get rid of himā¦,ā he muttered, staring at the floor. āAs long as that woman doesnāt learn about him being here, we should be safe. I will go back to the lake tonight to make sure we didnāt leave any traces.ā
He wanted to make sure the bag they found him in was destroyed. Haseena nodded, and gently put a small woolen blanket over the sleeping boy.
āItās strange that his powers have been awakened at such a young age. It looks to have been forced.ā
She sat by his bedside, and checked under his eyes. The runes werenāt as bright as the rest of them. They flickered, like a dying light. The skin underneath was bruised slightly.
āNone of us know how to handle a Vitael child. Even Maithiliās nature and power was hidden from us in our childhood. What should we do?ā
āWe need to consult the council. Thereās no other way around it; only they can advise us properly.ā She affirmed, much to Siddharthās dismay. āOnce the boy is healed, we will pay them a visit.ā
āAlrightā¦ā
āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā
The mirror held the patterns of his mark, the swirling scarlet in his irises, and his sleeping Piya behind him. His fingers met the flowers on branches, and woeful eyes upon his bracelet. The edelweiss was dangling. Some of the strands used to hold it in place were torn, likely from the chaos earlier. He took it off and began to mend it to the best of his ability, with careful knots. She wouldnāt be happy to see it broken, neither would he.
A knot in his heart grew.
The crescent moon in the center of his chest began to glow with the thought of her. His soul, it was begging to be near her. Too close they had been to being torn apart. It was anxious. It was restless. It wanted her.
See what happens, when youāre with me?
Centuries ago, Abhay was punished by Nature with a twisted death sentence, for harboring the kind of forbidden love that Piya now had for him. To see Piya put in a similar, near-death situation now, it was his worst nightmare. If it werenāt for the stone and the sheer power of their soul bond, neither of them would be here on this earth right now. And her death wouldnāt have been without pain.
He joined her at her bedside. Wrapped in just a silken robe, Piya was asleep. In pain, but asleep. The stirring of his soul and the knot in his heart faded with their proximity. He had to check her wounds again. The covers were pushed aside and the knot of the robe was undone. The bruising on the skin over her ribs was gone, as were the strange scars and burns that Maithiliās dark magic had left. Not a sign left to be noticed. It would take longer for the bones to fuse again. Some were still broken. More minor cuts healed long back, like the ones on her arms.
But Abhay was impatient; Piyaās breathing was shallow despite it. She needed more of his blood. He made a small cut at the base of her neck and on his thumb, pressing them together. His blood seeped into her veins, turning them black momentarily and forcing them to protrude a little. Fingers weaving through her hair, he kissed her forehead tenderly.
Youāre alright, and thatās all that matters right now.
He always knew Nature would come to separate them, and punish her. Little did he think that it would be in Maithiliās form. She technically was Nature now. A cruel irony.
I never wanted this for you.
His eyes softened. Their color too faded to her favorite cobalt, and he stared softly at his sleeping beauty. Of course, she wouldnāt sleep peacefully without him. He curled up under the covers with her, stroking her back.
Anyone who touches you wonāt be spared.
He wondered if they should go home. It wasnāt safe here. But he also didnāt want to cut their honeymoon short. Piya began to mumble his name in her sleep and curled up closer. He relaxed his muscles. The healing was rapidly quickening its pace.
āIām right here jaan.ā He whispered.
She felt safe again. Piya opened her eyes after a few minutes, and looked up, comforted by her favorite cobalt irises. Her beloved vampire was there. She already felt much better, more with him by her side.
āDoes it hurt anywhere?ā
She shook her head, and curled up closer. She was shivering.
āYouāre safe now.ā He whispered, wrapping the robe tightly around her.
The adrenaline faded, and his own weakness festered. Piya wasnāt safe, as long as he didnāt handle his thirst. He laid her in bed and with shaky fingers caressed her face.
āWhere are you going?ā She asked hoarsly, taking his hand.
āIāll be back. Donāt be afraid, I just need to take care of something.ā
The ice chest was in the kitchen, tucked under a counter. Not even the plastic smells of the exterior could mask the blood inside. He opened it up, and sat on the kitchen floor against the counter right next to it. There was a lot, and yet not enough. One sharp inhale, and the fangs slid out. He cracked his neck and knuckles, reaching inside for the first bag. So thirsty. The last time he felt this thirsty was when he was newly turned.
He drained the first, then the second, and continued on until each remaining blood bag was devoid of every single drop of blood. All within a few minutes, sucked dry and clean. He licked his fingers and lips, wiping the rest with the back of his hand and running his tongue over that. His body surged with energy and power again.
He stood up, and stretched his arms and back. One could hear the sound of cracking and popping in the joints. He looked at the empty ice chest with concern, tapping his fingers against the counter. He would need more soon. And Piya wasnāt an option right now. Not a safe option that was.
Piya was feeling too restless to stay in bed. It still hurt a little to stand, and she lacked the energy. Using the walls and furniture as a support, she made it to the stairs. One step at a time, she gripped the railing for her life and reached the kitchen. He snarled out of instinct, with the strong smell, and looked back at her. She was struggling to stand, and almost collapsed onto the floor. He caught her just before that.
āSo stubborn. I told you I would come back.ā He scolded. Piya shook her head.
āYou wereā¦.goneā¦for soāā
Her voice was weak and broken up. Abhay frowned and began the climb upstairs again. Piya laid her head against his chest to stop the world from spinning. It didnāt hurt, she only felt dizzy.
āHushā¦.not a word more. You havenāt fully recovered yet. You need rest.ā
āNoāā
She was worried the same thing would happen again, if she slept. Her eyes widened with fear as she looked up at him. Abhay shook his head and kissed her forehead. He didnāt want to force her to sleep, but without it she wouldnāt recover. He tucked her in, using compulsion in a gentle, gradual manner until she fell asleep.
You will be alright. You once called me your angel right? That angel is here to protect you. Always.
She held his hand tightly before falling asleep. Abhay sat next to her in silence, staring at the ceiling and stroking her hair. It didnāt take long for his phone to snap him out of the empty spaces in his head. Siddharth was calling.
āHello?ā
Siddharth was returning from the lake, after filling the bag with rocks and drowning it in the water where it should have remained. He decided to call Abhay on the way back, still unable to brush aside the feeling that something was wrong there. He could tell just by Abhayās voice that his instincts were correct.
āAre you and Piya okay? I felt something earlier and wasnāt sure.ā
Abhay stared at Piya once more, and stayed silent enough for Siddharth to worry.
āWeāre coming back home, day after tomorrow. Maithili is here.ā
Siddharth stopped in his tracks. His eyes widened, and he began to run back to the mansion.
āMaithili?! Are you both alright? Did she do something?ā
āIāll explain once we come back. Donāt worry.ā
Abhay hung up without any further explanation, and made sure his gaze never left Piya. Keeping control over himself was tiring, but he wanted to relax. He let it slip, inviting the beast out of hiding, and leaned in closer to Piya. He felt so at peace being near her. So did the beast.
Past midnight, more scents interrupted his repose. Thankfully, familiar scents, and quite a few of them. He was at the door before they could even knock. At some point, he was expecting her.
āEstelle.ā
āAbhay.ā
The group led by the council member invited themselves in, one by one, Abhay watching from the side. Estelle looked him up and down, always amazed by how much quicker Duralis vampires could stand on their feet.
āHow is she?ā
āFine, thank you for asking. What about the Vitael? And Maithili?ā
āWe captured some for questioning. Maithili is of course gone.ā
That answer wasnāt enough for him, forcing the remaining rage into clenched fists. How long would they have to live in this fear?
Estelle handed him a letter, bound with a wax seal.
āWe request your and her presence in a few days. I trust that you both will be able to come.ā
āWe will.ā He replied, shoving the letter into a drawer. āHow did you find me here, if you donāt mind me asking?ā
āAn old friend of yours brought us. Followed your scent real well, despite being masked with your wifeās. Herās was much more potent as a human.ā She turned towards the door. āHeās outside, I believe on the phone.ā
āWho?ā
On cue, knuckles met the wood of the door. Abhay found the scent and aura familiar.
āThere he is. Come in.ā
Of course he was slightly taller than the door frame allowed. A head of ashen blonde hair sucked underneath and revealed the smiling face of an old mentor and friend. Abhay couldnāt help but feel better.
āItās been a while, Abhay.ā
āA bit too long, Jovan.ā
Estelle dusted her hands and beckoned her group outside. Soon they were gone, leaving one unexpected guest behind. They had a lot to catch up on, as the dawn caught up to them.
