The onus lies on musicians who pick singers suitable for their songs.

Her voice sounds good in audio. I only remarked her voice did not suit the younger girls she sang for. She sounded too old for those young girls she sang for.

I am not dissing her command over playback singing or her talent.

Asha pulled off songs very well. Her voice had the zing required for songs like Rangeela, Mast, Company etc. Atleast she did not sound like Urmila's mom in Rangeela.

Anyway she has also shifted focus to albums and her restaurant business. I like her successful attempts at diversification.

I remember Jatin Pandit saying once that Yash Raj only wanted Lata as their main singer. They had to convince him to even allow Asha to sing in DDLJ. If you see Lata didn't sing much but she got all the big YRF projects. Kavita Krishnamurthy had more or less disappeared after 2001.Devdas was her last big outing. While Alka was huge till mid 2000's. It took Sometime for Alka to lose her spot.

Quite true. All later day films she sang for are YRF films like Chandni, Darr, DDLJ, DTPH, Mohabbatein, Veer Zaara, Mujhse Dosti Karoge etc. Whether her voice suited younger girls like Rani, Kareena, Preity or not.

Did she have contract with Rajshris also? She sang all main songs of MPK and HAHK. Barjatya dropped her only from HSSH.

I guess if Chopra sr had his own way he would get Lata sing for Dhoom series too.

I do not need list of Lata's awards, achievements. I am aware of her talent and why she is the biggest name in history of Indian film music. The point is her voice did deteriorate naturally with age and she still got songs for younger heroines even though her voice did not suit them.

Comparison with Alka is only for young actresses and Alka did sound better for Madhuri, Juhi, Raveena, Preity etc than Lata. The audio of songs may be good but in video I felt her voice did not suit younger actresses. Her weakest work is Veer Zaara where she does not sound suitable for Preity at all.

I appreciate her decision to withdraw from awards to give chance for younger singers. Asha also did the same. But atleast Asha managed to suit younger girls and pulled off songs like Rangeela, Khallas, Tanha Tanha and did not sound like Urmila's mom.

Lata can sing as long as she wants and make her own albums.

I am writing on basis of her suitability for younger girls when her voice had clearly begun to deteriorate due to age. Whereas singers like Alka and Kavita have been booted out of industry from 2000s itself just because their voices seemed older in comparison to Shreya, Sunidhi. Though they were not *that* old back in mid 2000s.

The point is that if certain section of the audience thinks that her voice did not suit younger actresses, it won't become a FACT, unless there is proof where Indian audience participated in a poll and the results outed Lata's voice as "too old" or "too bad".

Because the majority of the 90s audience, music directors, composers, singers, filmmakers like Yash Chopra etc etc DID NOT THINK SO.

The fans did not think that she sounded like Madhuri or Kajol's mom in DTPH or DDLJ. Such albums became best-selling albums too, and Lata's voice was praised critically.

E.g. Her solos like "Didi Tera Dewar", "Mere Khwabon Mein Aaye" etc etc became a rage. Obviously, the credit goes to the actresses + chorepgraphy + filmography, but you can't just NOT praise the playback singer for the success of these songs.
Otherwise singers like Sukhwinder, Sunidhi etc etc etc wouldn't have won accoldaes for "Chaiya Chaiya", "Beedi Jalaiyle" etc etc etc

So clearly there were enough people in the audience who LOVED Lata's voice and still do.

Repeating again and again how "bad" Lataji's voice was in Veer Zaara won't make it a fact. It's your opinion.
Was there an online poll conducted for this?
Has YouTube or ITunes or JioSaavn community conducted a survey, where people disliked Veer-Zara's voice due to Lata ji's voice?

Don't get m wrong. I am not trying to convince you that her voice was "good" in Veer Zaara, because that's your opinion. 👍🏼

For me, even if she was "bad" let's say, then also it doesn't make any difference as she was 75 years old in 2004. A feat. that many aspiring singers can only dream of.

She eventually stopped getting work in mainstream films soon after 2004, so I don't understand the fuss about Lata singing songs that were offered to her.

I do agree with the fact that talented singers like Alka/Kavita should not have outed from the industry for being too "old" but that's a separate issue if ageism in the industry.

That is why I used the word 'I FEEL'.

As for fact, Lata's weakness in Veer Zaara may have been a reason why she never did playback singing for mainstream movies after that. And even Yash Chopra did not use her voice for JTHJ in 2012 for Katrina and Anushka.

I am not dissing her talent or her entire career. That is why I used the word '2000s' in the topic title itself and specified the time period when she did sound deteriorated and older in voice quality. I do not remember her songs from Mujhse Dosti Karoge becoming super hits either or people liking her voice for Rani and Kareena.

Nor do I recall people lapping up her songs in Veer Zaara in 2004.

Fact would be if we discussed stardom, achievements or entire careers of artistes and if I falsified any fact or wrote something outlandish like 'Neha Kakkar is better singer than Lata'.

Lata has been sounding off key for years and something that media also acknowledged in columns. Lata kept getting work post 90s mainly due to goodwill and contract she had with Yash Chopra.

I think if people talk of musical jodis then also they would like Lata better with Kishore and Rafi than with Sonu and Udit. If voices of singers gel or not and have chemistry or not. It is about eras and not attacking talent or stature of an artiste.

Just as lot of films Amitabh does now are faltu like Boom, Teen Patti etc and do not hold candle to his work in 70s and 80s. But criticism does not mean Amitabh was never a good actor at all.

Now if producers other than YRF did not use Lata's voice after 90s and Rajshris also did not take her in HSSH, Vivah etc later then it is clear they did not want to use her voice any longer as it perhaps did not suit their films and actors they signed on.

At some point producers did stop signing her.

EVERY singer has been booted out of industry after just a decade or as soon as they entered their mid 30s. Either due to age or to look for more affordable and cheaper artists.

Only Lata and Asha got umpteen chances no matter how old they got or how expensive they were. That is partly due to their talent but also a goodwill factor IMO.

Never heard of other singers keep getting offers no matter how old or expensive they got. Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum, Geeta Dutt, Poonam, Sadhana, Alka, Kavita, Manna Dey, Talat Mehmood, Mukesh, Shailendra, Hema Sardesai, Udit, Shabbir, Vinod Rathod, Sonu, Shaan, Babul, Kumar Sanu, Kunal Ganjawala etc all phased out.

Probably Kishore and Rafi would have met same fate if they had not died.

I wonder if her voice was used in Veer Zara because of the Madan Mohan melodies that were used for the film. Her voice worked well for Madan Mohan's compositions in the past so maybe they decided to use it there.

All singers have off days. I have heard her sing live more than once and she was incredible.
