I never thought her voice didn't suit the younger actresses. It seems so now maybe because we've got used to Sunidhi, Shreya etc. But for Veer Zara which was in the early 2000s, that was just after the 90s where Lata was a popular singer and she was almost everywhere right before the 90s. So, people were so used to listening to the female lead's voice as Lata's that it didn't sound wrong at all. It still doesn't sound wrong to me. Some people really do sound like that, not everybody has a thick voice in real life lol. I think her voice didn't age that much. Also, it's great that she didn't sing any songs that didn't suit her style of singing cuz that would've been awful.

Up until 2000s, she was good. She was great in DDLJ songs for eg. But yeah that voice was horrible in VZ.

Nothing ageist if voice or looks or health deteriorate with age. The only difference is that not everyone keeps getting work even if they have deteriorated with age. Unlike....

I am not a Lata hater and I can clearly see you seem be taking offense on behalf of Lata.

Mangeshkar sisters are not jobless BTW. Nor is anyone dissing them here.

Lata has her own business in luxury watches, diamond jewellery, Mangeshkars run hospitals, Asha runs her own chain of restaurants and Mangeshkars have enough political clout to stay relevant even if they did nothing now. They do release their private albums of bhajans etc.

As for fact yes it is true Lata sounded unsuitable for Preity in VZ and her songs in VZ are nothing much to talk of, rather led to criticism in music reviews back then.

Of course reviews are also 'opinion' of critics so you are free to diss them.

I do not want to go in circles nor interested in personal attacks or clarifying again and again that no-one is trashing Lata's entire career here nor is anyone negating her achievements.

It is of course amusing how other singers were phased out after a decade or sometimes in less than a decade over excuses like their age, maturity or sounding dated or being expensive and replaced by younger and more affordable singers regardless of their popularity and hits but same criteria was never used against Lata by industry to phase her out.

As for controversies, Lata is no saint. She is a smart woman who knows the business and how to keep her monopoly. She even got her sister Asha sidelined often.

It is amusing people want respect for work simply because a legend did it. Even if the work is shoddy at some stage. It is like attacking criticism of JTHJ just because of Yash Chopra's name or age. Past work cannot be held as a shield to curb criticism of later work.

Of course if anyone wants to keep calling Lata great no matter what then it is also their choice and own OPINION and everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Lata is not a religion or god who cannot be criticised or questioned nor is criticism of Lata amount to blasphemy.

Luka Chhupi song suits Lata because she sang it for Waheeda Rehman who played an aged mother in RDB.

Of course she will sound suitable for that character of a mother of a grown up man.

Lata would have been more suitable for songs in films like Baghban also for Hema Malini. Rather than Preity for VZ.

Yes Mangeshkar sisters have lot of clout, monopoly and very solid links in politics as well as music and film industry. They have booted out many other singers and often tried to affect career of male singers also using tactics like telling producers they will not sing with X male singer etc.

Plenty of such stories and real life confessions of singers.

Mangeshkar sisters are highly competitive, hard nosed businesswomen.

This is a prayer song and not a typical romantic duet nor a song picturised on young actress prancing around in pyjamas with teddy bears in her room.

Mature voices sound more suitable in prayer or mantras, bhajans, which is why Suresh Wadekar is undisputed king of devotional songs even today. Lata sounded fine in O Paalanhare song in Lagaan also which is picturised on Aamir's onscreen mom in the film. It sounds more believable that an older person is leading a prayer.

She sounds like Sonu's mom to be honest. Never suited any song she sang with him. I mean no chemistry in duet songs. Sonu sounds best with Shreya, Sunidhi, Alka, Kavita. I felt she sounded way older for Sonu and made Juhi sound way older than her actual age in that song. That song is saved only due to ARR's music.

The struggle in that song was a given due to her age at that time. Live performances are difficult and taxing for any singer at any age. Lata was a senior citizen by that time so having a bad day on stage is not uncommon at that age.

In some live concerts I have noticed Alka, Asha, Udit also struggle to keep up pace. It does happen after a certain age and sometimes singers even get breathless.

They should take up only as much work as they can manage realistically at any point of time.

I prefer sonu with anuradha Paudwal more than shreya, the best match for him I guess , but sonu itself was someone known as the voice of Muhammad rafi who has been a Co singer for lata might be that's the motive to bring them together in many duets around 2000

Regarding live singing yes many singers aren't good at live performances udit narayan in his peak was not good with live stage singing he always looses his breath or to say alka yagnik too, but lata mangeskar was a singer of different level her reyazat is way more than likes of romantic crooning songs of udit alka likes, that's why it was strange of lata to be at that pace but yeah they are human being so could be a bad day

Personally except Veer Zara I liked her in all other movies especially Ddlj and Mohabbatein. But between Alka and Kavita the age of Lata's voice was not noticable. It's only after Sunidhi and Shreya that all these singers started sounding old imo.
