That is true. It is a shame Ranbir makes more news for his personal life and affairs with top actresses than the work he does.

Never a good news for an actor if his or her personal life overshadows his or her career.

He comes across as a chilled out nice and charming guy, the only one I like from the Kapoor Family 😆 and doesn't have an obnoxious attitude. He is also good looking and has a pretty successful career, is very talented also.

The question was what's special about him that top actresses date him.

How can anyone on this thread really tell that when most likely none of us know him personally?

Talking about the big stars playing their part in the multi starers leaving their egos at the door, Amitabh is like 5 years younger to Shashi but has always played his older brother convincingly and without any qualms. Imagine the current crop of actors doing that.

Did age of these characters matter ? Whether the film was Silsila where Sashis characters was older or Deewar where big B was older. Big B always had better roles.

There were movies where they both had literally the equal parts as well, like Do aur do paanch - big B shines through even if both of them were given equal footage.

Rk chooses good scripts but he is not my type look wise. Deepika likes Ranveer ranbir and they are not my type. Everyone is different. Alia is with him just to make herself look hot saying look he dumped Kat and deepika and he is with her. Alia is cute not hot

With due respect Sunil Dutt is a bigger star than Shashi anyday with ATBB like Mother India behind him in which he had a solid role like Birju. Sunil has way more hits and versatility than Shashi who mostly played softie roles whereas Sunil Dutt did everything from action, comedy, romance to grey shade roles. Sunil did not market himself well. Otherwise his roles are precursor of angry young man roles Amitabh did later. Salim-Javed cited his Mother India role as inspiration for Deewar.

Rajendra Kumar is also bigger star than Shashi Kapoor as a solo hero and was in ATBB Mother India besides many solo hits in 60s and later became richest man in Bombay by 1980s as he succeeded as filmmaker also.

Shashi Kapoor had measured success as solo hero and hardly a personality to overshadow anyone which is why he was totally eclipsed by other more charismatic actors in films like Waqt too which is remembered more for Raaj Kumar's one liners or Sunil's scenes with Sadhana or in court room arguments than Shashi's scenes. He was hardly able to pull off flamboyant or aggressive roles. Perhaps this is why he relied on heroine oriented films like Abhinetri or Sharmilee to stay afloat. He was too subtle.

So subtle that even in romantic films Rajesh Khanna and Rajendra Kumar surged way ahead.

I feel Shashi was handsome but not charismatic and was sort of held back. He never unleashed himself entirely the way Rajesh Khanna, Sunil, Amitabh, Dharam, Shatru or Vinod did. He was not even like Raj, Shammi or Rishi in flamboyance.

He took a backseat because he knew his limitations in what is expected from a mainstream hero in Hindi cinema. Hence he was ready to do supporting roles. Or did films where heroine had equal or better deal than him.

Sunil Dutt could switch off between rural and urbane easily. He set the standard for the daku films with his Mother India and Mujhe Jeene do. But he had a tendency for overacting sometimes. I felt like giving him a good shake for his prattling chatterbox ways in Waqt. What's with all those Gul-e-gulshan rubbish. The best acting he did in Waqt was how he displayed his humiliation and affronted dignity when his sister Sharmila called him a charity case her parents picked up off the road.

I consider Shashi the best actor among the older Kapoors. I would call his style 'natural' rather than subtle and a breath of fresh air in an era that called for filmi 'loud 'acting or rather flamboyance as you say. He certainly did not need to hide behind the heroines to deliver hits. Rather he extended his patronage to newcomers like Shabana or even established actors like Simi. Both of them have credited him with helping them improve their performance in his biography. He displayed his versatility in roles as different as the poor naive villager in Jab Jab Phool Khile, the bewildered husband in The Householder who can't handle his wife, the good twin/bad twin in Haseena Maan Jayegi, the newly released jailbird in Mukti who realizes that his wife and daughter have moved on during the period of his incarceration, the suspected fortune-hunter husband in Aamne Saamne or the womaniser in Mr. Romeo. Even the way he sings his heartbreak and betrayal in 'Ghungroo ki tarah' (Chor Machaye Shor) or Kaise kahe hum (Sharmilee). will make you sit up and take notice.I'll agree that he lost his way after his wife had died. But I thank him for not inflicting himself (longer) on us as Amitabh, Vinod Khanna and Jeetendra did in the 80s with younger and younger heroines. Though he did do a few films with Poonam Dhillon,Rati Agnihotri and Anita Raaj. The clamor for the Khans penchant for pairing with younger heroines was nothing compared to the clamor there was in the 80s. Unfortunately there was no internet and social media.

Sunil ia supposed to be chatterbox in Waqt because he is raised in a better family and is more educated than all his long lost brothers in that film. Raaj Kumar becomes a bitter criminal type. Shashi is self conscious for his poverty and working as a driver to pay his college fees. I feel makers deliberately made Sunil act chatty to draw contrast between him and his brothers in the film.

I do wish Shashi had worked longer or taken care of his health. He became depressed after death of his wife and he became unrecognizable. It felt sad to see most handsome man of his times to deteriorate so much or be on a wheelchair. He made good films like New Delhi Times in 80s and tried risky subjects as a filmmaker.

I would have liked to see him with Amitabh and Dharam the way Rishi was seen with AB in 102 not Out. It is always a pleasure to see stars do good roles that suit their age.

I enjoyed watching Shammi as dad or grandpa in later films and loved Ashok Kumar as narrator on TV shows.

I am sure Shashi would have done good roles. I feel failure of Ajooba left him heartbroken otherwise he had potential to do more as filmmaker. New Delhi Times is still relevant on state of media today. I wish he had made more films like that.

Sunil would have been wildly popular in 70s. He was precursor of angry young man. Some of his films did make it to prestigious film festivals like Mother India and another film with Waheeda Rehman in which he plays a reformed criminal (forgot its name). I respect him for his initiatives for communal harmony in real life.

Shashi Kapoor was subtle and perhaps better suited for international cinema. In commercial cinema he had to get overshadowed given his style. I was watching Pyar Kiye Ja today and it was evident how flamboyant Kishore Kumar was in that film and Shashi was good in standalone scenes but had it hard to match comic timing of Kishore Kumar and Mehmood. Kishore Kumar was better in madcap comedy scenes. Shashi just looks a bit held back and rarely acted or danced with abandon like Shammi for eg.

I have no issues with Dharam, Amitabh still working. They do good work and people love them. They are inspirational for being active at this age when most people begin to lose even hope for living, nor dress properly. I am all for older people living, working to their fullest and not disappearing into oblivion or sitting at home waiting for death. Dharam once said he would like to die with his boots on. That is how much he loved the active life. To each his own. I love Dharam and Amitabh's zest for life and their keeping up to date with latest trends and technology.

I found Rishi's films and Twitter entertaining too at his old age.

If you really want to see Shashi shaking a leg like Shammi you should watch the poolside song from Haseena Maan Jayegi where he makes fun of women's idiosyncrasies. Have you seen the Shammi-Shashi qawwali item song Tumhein Husn De Ke Khuda Ne Sitamgar Banaya from Jab Se Tumhen Dekha Hai? Unfortunately I couldn't finish Pyar Kiye Jaa and the fault lies with the insipid Rajasree. Why couldn't they pair the sparkling Kalpana or Mumtaz with Shashi instead of her. As for comedy, I find Mehmood and Kishore Kumar too loud. I.S.Johar is about the only one I can handle and Asrani too sometimes.

Sunil Dutt need not have been a chatterbox in Waqt. When Yash Chopra recreated Waqt with Trishool, Shashi Kapoor played Sunil Dutt's character without any of the original character's prattle. And there was no denying his sophistication or affluent background. Though I missed Dutt's snobbery and disdain towards the lower class which made the character very human in Waqt. The reformed criminal film with Waheeda is Mujhe Jeene Do where Dutt pulled off some of his best acting. Pity that none of his later productions did half so well.I always enjoy watching older actors on screen. They bring their experience with them and makes things interesting. But never paired with young girls.
