Even I have the same question lol - the way girls pine for him - and mind you, these are absolutely stunning gorgeous ladies, who have broken many hearts themselves..so for them to crave for the Kapoor scion - I mean RK would be a charmer for sure for him to have so many admirers and so many craving to become his wife..not just stay his girlfriend..

I DONT like RK - have seen him in real life - and the boy next door looks better than him - he almost looked pale and sickly to me..(guess its because of drugs and smoking) even though he is a cutie on screen..

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Meanwhile Rishi Kapoor IMO is the most good looking Kapoor (for me even more than Shashi) and one of the most effortlessly natural actors on Indian celluloid! Dont think he was ever a B-Lister..his movies may not have been money spinners, but just like Kareena..he was always a respected star and what a fine actor!

Amitabh dominated due to his sheer talent, screen presence, aura, dialogue delivery and voice. Not because makers intentionally wrote scripts to favour his character. He was a newbie when he did Namak Haraam and had no power to influence makers. Still he overshadowed Rajesh Khanna in that film. Shakti is written to favour Dilip Kumar character but Amitabh not only matched Dilip Kumar frame to frame but also overshadowed him.

Bachchan has plenty of solo hits like Zanjeer, Don, Satte Pe Satta, Besharam, Aaj Ka Arjun, Shehanshah, Khuda Gawah, Kaalia, Coolie, Laawaris, Sharaabi, Barsaat ki ek Raat, Mr Natwarlal etc, so to say he deliberately chose to do multi starrers to play it safe is just undermining his legacy and stardom.

Shashi Kapoor was doing well in 1960s but never a star of even Rajesh Khanna or Rajendra Kumar level let alone Bachchan level. He is certainly bigger than Rishi Kapoor though.

Shashi was known as Amitabh's sidekick in 70s and 80s. Amitabh was newbie when he did Deewar and had no power to influence Chopra, Salim-Javed to favour his character. Yet he swallowed everyone else in Deewaar and Trishul.

Rishi NEVER ever had that charisma, talent or power to overshadow co stars in any film nor did Shashi.

Shashi even got overshadowed by Rajesh Khanna in Prem Kahani.

As far as Rishi is concerned even heroines, male co stars and newbies like SRK kept overshadowing him. He is nothing more than a cute chocolate boy in 70s and 80s and an adorable chubby man from 90s onwards.

It was Shashi - incredible actor (stage and screen - Hindi & English) who promoted AB - according to AB himself. His role in Deewar was meant to shine and Shashi deliberately under played to allow it. Earlier Shashi had pulled him off one of his films where he was playing an extra and told him he was meant for bigger things and these kind of roles would diminish him That they worked together so much after is because they were friends (later relatives) who respected each other. Not because Shashi wasn't an A lister who just played sidekick roles. You were talking about actors who have egos that won't allow them to act along another star. Shashi wasn't one of them.

AB on Shashi

The film started and Shashi ji was beside me in the next seat. We never said a word. Premier butterflies. But when the scene under the bridge started, the ‘mere pass maa hai’ moment, I felt a gentle hand on mine. It was Shashi ji’s. He never spoke, but the way he held my hand said everything. It was reassurance, it was affection, it was acknowledgement, it was complimentary, it was appreciation .. it was everything that a struggling actor that had once played an ‘extra’ in a film that starred this gentleman sitting next to me, had never ever dreamt would happen.

Shashi Kapoor and I became inseparables in many successful ventures that followed. Leading ladies would shy away from our projects by proclaiming that there would be nothing left for them to do once SK and AB were there together. He directed his first film with me.

Nothing I guess. This thread proves it.

Anyway, shout out to one of my favourite man Shashi Kapoor. I adore his puppy smile and twinkle eyes. Well, they don't make such a man anymore. Missing him badly.

Haha! Ironically people are discussing his dad and uncles more than him in this thread. 🤣

Shashi downplayed it? LMAO! He may have sensed Amitabh's potential but Amitabh would have overshadowed him anyway as he did in each film. Shashi got overshadowed in EACH multi starrer he did. Be it Prem Kahani with Rajesh Khanna, all films he did with Amitabh. He got overshadowed by heroines too. Hema easily lorded over him in Abhinetri, Rekha, Raakhee, Reena overshadowed him in 80s films.

He was a handsome man but did not even have as many hits as Shammi Kapoor let alone stardom like Rajendra Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh, Vinod, Sunil Dutt. Amitabh was still giving hits in 80s and early 90s when Shashi began doing flabby baap roles.

I'm not discounting Amitabh's talent. Nor did I say that he chose to play it safe by acting in multistarrers. But his aura or rather his success was such that script writers chose to give prominence to him at the expense of his fellow actors. Like in Khoon Pasina when Vinod Khanna threatened to walk out until the makers amended the scenes as was narrated to him initially. I would put Rajendra Kumar, Shashi Kapoor and Sunil Dutt on the same level as far as stardom was concerned in the 60s. Shashi had no compunctions about taking the back seat when necessary and letting the other person whether it be the hero or the heroine or the villain shine.Sanjeev Kumar also shared that same quality. It's enviable quality which most actors including Bachchan or Khanna don't have. Abhinetri as you can judge from the title itself is centered around the heroine Hema. So is Sharmilee centred around the two Rakhees. The script favors both the actresses and the hero needs to step hack and let them shine. Prem Kahani is clearly centred on the prem kahani between Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna. Shashi had little to do other than play an extended cameo. If Shashi has a fault it was that he acted in too many silly masala films without caring for the story or his character's importance. Quantity over quality. Though he did try to make it up in the 80s with the films he produced and acted like New Delhi Times.

Talking about the big stars playing their part in the multi starers leaving their egos at the door, Amitabh is like 5 years younger to Shashi but has always played his older brother convincingly and without any qualms. Imagine the current crop of actors doing that.

rk has done the last few memorable love story films of Bollywood

I don't think we've had a lovestory with yjhd reach since the movie, it's been so long but the songs are still evergreen

and even barfi, the movie was perfect

it's a shame all this laundiyabaazi attention took away from his acting career.

With due respect Sunil Dutt is a bigger star than Shashi anyday with ATBB like Mother India behind him in which he had a solid role like Birju. Sunil has way more hits and versatility than Shashi who mostly played softie roles whereas Sunil Dutt did everything from action, comedy, romance to grey shade roles. Sunil did not market himself well. Otherwise his roles are precursor of angry young man roles Amitabh did later. Salim-Javed cited his Mother India role as inspiration for Deewar.

Rajendra Kumar is also bigger star than Shashi Kapoor as a solo hero and was in ATBB Mother India besides many solo hits in 60s and later became richest man in Bombay by 1980s as he succeeded as filmmaker also.

Shashi Kapoor had measured success as solo hero and hardly a personality to overshadow anyone which is why he was totally eclipsed by other more charismatic actors in films like Waqt too which is remembered more for Raaj Kumar's one liners or Sunil's scenes with Sadhana or in court room arguments than Shashi's scenes. He was hardly able to pull off flamboyant or aggressive roles. Perhaps this is why he relied on heroine oriented films like Abhinetri or Sharmilee to stay afloat. He was too subtle.

So subtle that even in romantic films Rajesh Khanna and Rajendra Kumar surged way ahead.

I feel Shashi was handsome but not charismatic and was sort of held back. He never unleashed himself entirely the way Rajesh Khanna, Sunil, Amitabh, Dharam, Shatru or Vinod did. He was not even like Raj, Shammi or Rishi in flamboyance.

He took a backseat because he knew his limitations in what is expected from a mainstream hero in Hindi cinema. Hence he was ready to do supporting roles. Or did films where heroine had equal or better deal than him.

I sometimes feel his heart was not into it once his wife died. He let his personal life mess up his work and stopped taking care of his health and began to look too old or overweight too soon. He had ballooned and began to work in dad roles when Amitabh, Jeetu, Dharam were still doing lead roles in late 80s.

I feel if he was little less subtle he would have succeeded more as a solo hero or superstar. Indian audience likes actors to be a bit more opened up onscreen in terms of persona.

I feel he also risked too much when he forayed into international cinema or crossover projects and did films like Siddhartha. He faced unprecedented flak for his intimate scenes with Simi Garewal and Siddhartha was banned in India. Other actors usually played it safe by avoiding lovemaking scenes or kissing scenes onscreen. Shashi also got flak for intimate scenes in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. Audience was not ready for such scenes back then.
