Education and good English has nothing to do with each other. There are many students even now who doesn't have much command in Englsih language, simply because they studied in a state board school. And knowing English doesn't mean a person is better. English, like every other language is just a means of communication.

Why do people confuse being educated with having a good command over the English language? English may be a universally spoken language but it is not the hallmark of intelligence. A lot of people also have an issue with the way she pronounces some of the words like sorry and thank you. Can we please stop associating South Asian accents with being uneducated? If you have a problem with her accent, please introspect. There are hundreds of thousands languages spoken around the world and with those come hundreds of thousands of accents. Some of the brightest minds in the world don't speak in English but in their own native languages. Does that compromise their education?

Anupamaa must have studied in Guajarati all through junior and middle school. Her limited experience with English happened only when she attended college and that too for just a year. As for her struggles with outdoor work, her wings were clipped by her husband and mother-in-law for 26 years. Her life was within the four walls of that house from the age of 19 to this day. She never got the opportunity to learn to be independent. Even now, though she is divorced, the fact that she still resides in that wretched house means her independence has its limitations. You cannot learn when you have shackles on your feet (Vanraj, Baa and Toshu, her own mental/social conditioning) constantly holding you back. Mental health is very complex. She will get there. It's just going to take a long time.

Absolutely correct. Knowing English is not sign of intelligence. I work with global team, so many Chinese, Mexican are smart but don't have command over English. They don't feel inferior about it. I don't know why in india if you don't know English we label them as uneducated. It was very common at that time to attend vernacular medium. English as a subject is thought later on. Re her sorry some ppl do get their local accent while talking English.

Sammy I am an educator and can tell you that even today girls going to colleges in tier 2, 3 cities struggle to communicate in English. They get jobs in cities and struggle to fill forms in a bank. Many of them who study in regional language schools find English tough. I've asked them wasn't the medium of instruction English? They sheepishly grin and say all teaching happened in the local language. They studied enough English to pass an exam. I'm speaking of girls in their 20s. I'm not surprised at Anupama s language. She has been kept under the demonic rule of Baa and Vanraj. Her request to pursue her education was thwarted by the duo.

I belong to the region where we have the habit of pronouncing "sha" as "sa". Even people with good command on English, pronounce sa instead of sha. Forget English words, even Hindi words are also pronounced like that. This is because we have acquired the accent of our Mother tongue. So, some people speak like that also.

I might not be correct but even back in days school did teach basic English classes. We were ruled over for nearly 300 years so at least they might have taught at least 3-4 classes. Out of topic but in our culture English is overrated - isn't it just a language like any other. Why make it a big deal - relating it to high class and education - Bollywood and ITV should stop doing this.

But apart from English someone who is highschool graduate is educated enough, what i don't get is why they keep pulling that unpadh thing over and over. To learn language you don't need education, just enough exposure is enough.

Even while staying at home as she taught Pakhi dancing - she could have taught herself few new things from her kids books. Don't we all learn as we grow.

It's just that makers can't get any creative.

She could have gone for half a year and dropped out which is why she knows very less folks there.

No i do infact think that there is a certain correlation with people being eager to learn with the language they speak. I have seen a lottttt of people who are intellectually excellent trying to learn as many languages and cultures as possible in an effort to understand things from a different perspective. Also being equipped with proper language skills in your arsenal goes a long way in preparing you for the outside world.

The way i see her maa theory being connected to this topic is in the way that a normal educated woman knows her self worth and is sure of herself and her own individuality. Her entire being revolves around her identity as a mother. She keeps using "maa" as an excuse to justify all her illogical behavior and nonsense lectures. And that looks not only an over glorification of mothers but also looks like a deliberate attempt to show her more uneducated than she really is

No no you didn't come off as judgemental at all. We are just having a healthy discussion here in an attempt to understand each other's point of view. 🤗And I think I understand what you are trying to convey.

You are absolutely right about there being a connection between people wanting to learn a language/s to satiate their intellectual and/or academic curiosity. However, in this case, like I mentioned before, Anupamaa's desires to do anything for herself were killed the minute she stepped into that house and more so after she became a mother. She hasn't known anything else, in fact she wasn't allowed to be anything else. Which is why her entire identity revolves around her being a mother, educated or uneducated. With that being said, her maa waale justifications just do not make sense. And that too for who? For that useless Paritosh and mindless Pakhi? And after today's episode I am convinced that Paritosh has the most disappointing character arc in this show. The writers had numerous occasions to redeem his character (especially with Kinjal in his life) but they are making him worse by the minute. Ok now I am digressing. 😆
