At the moment it is considered neither legal nor illegal, but i think it should be legal.

The prostitutes have to live in a secluded area and are not allowed to come within 200 yards of public place, they are allowed to practice it indivisually, and not publicly. they are molested and harrased by many police officers and other ministers or anybody at a high post, they have minimal rights and it is considered as "public indecency" if they appear somewhere in public. The places where they practice are constantly being raided by the police so they have to keep running here and there most of the time, and if they want to prevent this they have to provide their services to them aswell.

Should it be legalised? Do post your views.

Sex and crimes go together so crimes against prostitutes are like professional hazards. If they have to keep runing around to save themselves then they can try to get out of it and get a decent job perhaps. As far as public shunning them, well do you want them to be near your family or hovering near school and impress upon husbands and kids? . 😊

I think the profession is aware of medical risks and a prostitute or her customer in act won't do anything differently then what has been done legalised or not. I heard not too long ago a non-profit corporation trying to stop prostitution in Amsterdam. https://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20896380/

^ True. Most of us won't like to have them anywhere near our families. But some, if not most, of them are forced in this profession. For some, there may not be a way out based on who all they are supporting this way. I am a firm believer of one's will power. I know they can walk away from this and at least try leading a better life...may be flip burgers....just do something...well..decent!!! Still, I don't know the issues some of them may be dealing with day in and day out and why they have not walked away yet. If legalizing helps these women, I am all for it. At least something good will come out of it that way.

Do you really think that if a prostitute will be able to get a decent job after she quits her profession? do you really think anybody will accept her?

A women enters this proffesion because circumstances force her to do so. Afterall, she has to do something for a living. A woman only enters this proffession after she has tried EVERYTHING she can do to get two meals per day. Getting a job for a single woman in a city is not easy, specially a woman who is uneducated and if it were so easy, we would not have any prostitutes at all, because no-one does this willingly. You think she just has to go and knock a door and she'll get a job??? when educated ladies with a degree are running around unemployed, how can these uneducated and alone ladies get a job?( generally only those woman enter this proffession whose parents leave them alone to rot or whose husband is either a drunkard or has left her).

For how long do we expect a woman to roam around the city with an empty stomach, torn clothes and nothing to do but cry?we people can't live without food for even 2 days, they roam around empty-stomach for 15-20 days. sometimes they need money urgently because sometimes these women also have kids, so they suffer along with her. As we know no mother can see the suffering of her child, so she takes up the last thing she wants to do, prostitution.

Coming back to the topic, if it's legal then atleast the police can't trouble them everytime. all they do is create nuisance for them. Atleast they will access to basic rights, because without those anyone can come and exploit them or take their services for free and they won't be able to do anything because they don't have the right to. And if you are saying you don't want them running around your husbands and kids and let me tell you that this is not what making it legal means, it just means that there will be no "social exclusion" and they will have their right to live in a good clean place they want to. And they don't pick on anybody, men go to them themselves. I have seldom heard of a prostitute walking up to a man walking on the road and saying" hey, will you come into bed with me?"

I support legalizing prostitution so that they are not abused or beaten up. So that government can track the ones with STDs. So that their "brokers" do not take advantage of them. So that police does not bother them unnecessarily for undue favors. So that they start paying their share of taxes out of the money they are busy making. So that they can save some for old age through some sort of retirement plan!!!

I am under no delusions that legalization will provide any sort of respect to this profession or deem it a "respectable" profession. People should be discouraged from making money this way whether legal or illegal.

Well, for those who are forced into it, they have no choice. But willingly, that happens very rarely, it's like one in a million shot. It has been proved by surveys that a very less fraction of women do this willingly.

Going by some of the media reports now a days, I doubt the highlighted number is that low. It's actually getting higher every passing day.

All girls who are escorts or so called "high society" call girls, they are trained to be like that, sophisticated and elegant. And even if they do have a good background, they enter this feild only when they have been abandoned by their parents or thrown out of their houses. Girls become call girls or escorts to hide their true identity from public. call girls are not visible to general public and escorts services claim that "they do not provide sex workers".

Some may but then there are some who go for it willingly for the lure of easy money and getting known in rich circle. Unfortunately, there's more and more of the willing ones going for such services now a days.

Ofcourse, and that's what they try to do, but when they don't ,that's when they enter this feild. Let's think of it, where will they live? in slum areas? even in slum areas, no-one would leave her, since she is alone and without a husband. All the men there would easily rape if they wanted to, could easily molest her because obviously in slum areas you don't have "lock and key" doors. Then why not make it a commercial activity? if your body is being exploited, then why not make money for it?And this is not the only way she would be exploited. Giving weekly money(hafta), sometimes she would not even get a place to live there because who is bothered about an alone woman and who wants to share their space with her?if she roams around the city then she can be gangraped and thrown away somewhere. atleast prostitutes have a place to live, even if it is secluded, they have a shelter.

hmmmmmm........is it really this bad out there? I mean can we get real here!!!

1)and there are male prostitutes too. and secondly, in a society like ours, it's much easier for a man to get a job.eg- casual labour, construction sites, ricksaw pulling etc.

agreed. It is hard for a lone woman to get such jobs and chances of her getting exploited are high too. Still, we can't legalize the profession to fit this "job requirement" of the stranded women. There should be some other way to uplift and help them and I believe some NGOs do try to help and uplift them, that is, if they are willing to be helped. Some may not want to be helped in a constructive way. They may just choose to make money the easy way and we can't be legalizing prostitution just to make it easy for such men/women to make money.

2)then what else can they do?hunger makes you do the wildest things.

defenitely. i am not saying it would be eradicated by making it legal, but law would consider them equal. society is not what we are talking about. the basic rights would be given which should be there for every indivisual.

See, I support legalization but my reasons and take is different than yours.

"i think we're reaching the same conclusions but at times based on diametrically opposite beliefs.😊"

quoted because they are not my words but they fit here lot more than where they were used originally😆

You made a good point about various agencies trying to help them get out of it but it seems more and more prostitutes are concerned about having legal rights to carry on with their chosen profession rather then take or make the opportunity to free themselves . 😊

As for what should they do to feed themselves - let's see, one can be a maid or housekeeper, cook, baby sitter, work in a factory, I mean if one really needs to find work they don't have to look far. 😉 I hear there is maid shortages everywhere. 😛 and btw how do they feed themselves after being 40 or 50 years of age? 😕

Amen to this.

Prostitution should never be a respectable and acceptable profession from anybody in any background of life. However, the undeniable fact is that prostitution exists. It is the oldest professions and as long as human nature has a demand for it, there will be a supply created by hook or by crook. The only two alternatives are curb human nature or legalize prostitution for better health care, STD protection and hopefully create economic stability to remove the children of prostitutes out of the cycle of evil. If controlling human nature was a feasible option I would go for it, but in this case the lesser evil wins out over the greater good.

Staying in thailand and being a finance guy, I can give some positives and some negatives of prostitution:

1. Prostitution is one of the biggest business in Thailand and one of the important aspects for Tourism in Thailand.
2. The high tourism rate has increased revenue of government through Airport taxes and airline payments, airspace use agreements etc.
3. The high tourism keeps the country's forex position strong.
4. The number of tourists helped other businesses like hotels, bars, taxis, transportation local air travel to boom.
5. It also gives the normal massage parlours its business contributing to many households income (count is in millions for few thousands of prostitutes)
6. The only other major business than tourism contributing to thai economy is Rice exports.
7. Noone in this country dies of hunger.

Negatives:
1. Thailand known as land of smiles will always be known as land of prostitution. So much that I had enough lectures before i came here for work.
2. The society has turned sex oriented than love oriented. Everyone runs behind money and no money no honey applies.
3. The divorce rate is much higher even if the guys in thailand are not educated and dont hold respectable job.
4. Lot of cases of extramarital affairs on both the sides
5. Government doesnt want people to be educated, which would end the industry as half the economy is run by this industry directly or indirectly. Hence education standards are very low.

Lalalala.......however much we condemn prostitution, lets face it...it exists in every society....
I'm completely against forced prostitution, which in other words, is trafficking.
However, if a person willingly wants to sell his or her body...their life, let them do whatever they want to do.
And when the argument of 'destroying families' comes in....let me say something...
It's not the prostitutes fault that the husband (or wife in case of gigolos) it's the fault of the respective husband/wife. They themselves should have enough self control to not indulge in physical pleasures outside their marriage....!!!!
