Romance is dead in BW?

Romance and romantic films used to be a big deal in Bollywood. Every second film was of that genre. Even when i was growing up in the 90's and 2000's, there were so many romantic films. Even bad ones like Mohabbatein were blockbusters.

But now, very few movies of that genre are working. Last year debacle of LAK2 is just the tip of the iceberg.

Even I was thinking that I haven't enjoyed a pure romantic film in a long time. Aashiqui2, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Ram-Leela, Ranjhaanaa, 2 States, etc were all romantic films but which have all released quite long back.

I don't think the genre is dead, though. There will always be enough adolescents and young people to keep the genre going. And once in a while there will be a romantic film that will captivate even those who are not regular fans of the genre. But it will need to be more nuanced, more suited to the times. Something like LAK 2 just doesn't cut it.

Totally agree !

One day I was picking out the romantic songs that released since the last few years and current..I only managed to find 20 and it made me realise that there is so much lacking for the romance genre.

I miss the 90s and early 2000s there would be 100s of songs just throughout 1 whole year and now so much has changed 😒

Absolutely.

What I have noticed is how film trailers, songs, promos will show the couple nearly kissing or kissing or a hint of them in bed together. Love has become more of a physical notion. I cannot remember the last Bollywood movie where romance was innocent and the leads made you go all mushy and fuzzy on the insides

Right now everything in Bollywood is dead because of the pandemic.😆

But even if romance has been dead in Bollywood for past few years, isn't it good because everyone is finally moving on from this genre?😆

It's good that people want to see something else other than a love story.😆I hope romantic angles are also taken out from movies of other genres which don't need it.

Dangal proved that you don't need romance in a movie to please the masses.

All things said, I don't think romance genre is going to remain dead. What would remain dead is SRK's brand of romance. The innocent sweet romantic movies that used to get made in 90s and early 2000s aren't made anymore because times have changed now.

Today's generation doesn't believe in romance to be sweet and innocent. Kissing and sex has became normal in movies because it is normal in real life. Just to get confirmation for being a couple you need to at least kiss.

If you are just holding hands with a girl/boy, then you're as good as friends.

Well, I think that's kind of like a reflection of the times we live in. The post-Internet generation is definitely neither innocent nor simple when it comes to love. Love has become increasingly physical for the youth. So yeah, movies are just cashing in on this changing dimension.

Love is more physical for post internet generation because physical aspect is part of love. Love is also more nuanced and complex for this generation. Most shitty romantic stories that worked in 90s and early 2000s won't work now not only because they are dated but also because people are so much more aware of things. Stalking is no longer romantic, harassing is no longer romantic, touching her inappropriately without invitation is gross. Tricking a girl to fall in love with you is no longer romantic. Disrespecting your partner is seen as toxic. When you take these things away at least 80% of bollywood's romance movies are gone. You can't make something like kkhh today people will tear Anjali apart for choosing Rahul who didn't love her before she was hot.

Also given how cynical we have become and how complicated and layered we think relationships have become, it would be hard to find writers who can write stories that are semi realistic, but still have the lovely magic of romance.

Personally I always complained how bollywood doesn't know or care to make much beside romance and I still feel that way somewhat. So kind of happy audience no longer feel movies = romance.
