I think some fact checker (a critic of the current govt) even shared the pics of the boxes being sent to other countries with the expiration dates highlighted claiming how Modi was claiming high ground when actually he's just disposing off the soon-to-be expired vials.

Even right now, India has enough jabs to carry on with the vaccination drive throughout May. SII is looking for raw materials so that it can continue its production in June/July. If there's a shortage in Kerala(and I believe you that there is) then I'm guessing it has more to do with logistics and Babudom. The demand vs supply issue. That the sudden increase in demand wasn't expected so the required orders weren't placed or whatever the process is. Coz right now even in UP(which is the most populous state) or Maharashtra (which is literally ravaged and vaccinating the highest number of people daily) there is no vaccine shortage.

This Govt has f*cked up on most of the fronts when it comes to handling this crisis. This I don't believe is one of them. Baki you do you👍🏼

Some of my folks are in Andhra, Telengana and Tamilnadu. And all of them have claimed that there was indeed a vaccine shortage.

I myself know of some folks in my relatives who were hesitating to take the vaccine because they couldn’t imagine spending that kind of money on a vaccine.

Vaccination is free under central government and many state government institutions, but it is being done on first comes first serve basis, if someone wishes to move up the queue then they can pay Rs600 to private institutions for Vaccination

Central government is purchasing 50% of vaccines from SII and rest 50% will go to states + Private sector

That is what is wrong. This will clearly promote black marketing of the vaccines and also will create more confusion. If they are able to provide for money, why not do it for free? How can spending a couple of Rs. will suddenly sprout more vaccines when they are not available in the regular quota?

At the end of the day, my needs are selfish. I want my relatives vaccinated. As I imagine you do, too.

It is frustrating to watch this happen.

And I can't help feeling profiteering is behind it. Moderna shots are 6 dollars a pop. It's free in the U.S., but that's what the price is if you were to pay. Cheaper than Covishield and higher in efficacy than Covishield. So why weren't they approved months ago when the U.S. and E.U. approved them? These are what boggle my mind.

That's the case with every vaccine. Countries booked vaccine doses before they knew if they would even work. These companies like Pfizer and Moderna wouldn't have been able to work at that speed in the first place if the US govt didn't pump in so much money.

There is no excuse for why a few million vaccines would be wasted in a country of a billion plus people. At least the front line workers would have been ready to take them. Vaccine hesitancy only comes in after a certain amount of the population has already been vaccinated.

Poonawala isn't the savior you think he is. He is on record saying they were making profits at even 150 rupees but now they're charging 600 rupees privately? Covishield is home-made and charging up to 1200? Who is allowing them to set such exorbitant prices? I suspect a lot of babus are filling their pockets to allow such carnage.

I don't think Poonawala is a saviour. He's a businessman and he took a massive risk which is in turn beneficial for my country. If the vaccine trials would have failed it would have been his loss. Nobody would have paid him. He also has contractual obligations. If he doesn't earn profit than neither he or anyone else would take such a big risk when the next crisis comes. He's selling the jabs at 1200 to private hospitals. People going to private hospitals like you and me can afford it so why should they get it for free?

The govt hospitals will still give it for free. The BPL and others who can't afford it will get it from there. The 50% vaccines coming from center will also go to States. Baki around 18 states have already said that vaccination would be free there. Ab wo kya paise de tumhe injection lagwane ke?

Not true at least as per my in-laws and parents who had to spend $1200 per head per each dose to get the vaccines. Their house help still didn’t get their vaccines because there were no slots available in the Government hospitals while there were plenty available for a price.

But isn't this just incentive to black market vaccines then? When one thing is selling for different prices everywhere, the richest ones will find their ways to it while the poor suffer. They aren't even selling to the central and state government at the same prices. They're setting up a system where people who can afford it can skip queues while the poor wait and wait and meanwhile get sick and die. Right now, I think only 1 or 2 percent have been vaccinated in India. How long will it take for the people who need to get them for free? That's why they should be free to everyone. Make the rich and middle-class people rely on the same government that they love so much.

If they are available for a price, which means the vaccines are there but just not available for free- isn’t it? And lower middle class people and people with no means cannot afford to shell out that kind of money for a vaccine. They have to be made free all across the board, is all I am trying to say!

Where is this happening? The 1200 wala rate is gonna start form 1st May. If any of this(as in charging you 1200 for the vaccines) is happening I believe you need to report the hospital name to the police. If nothing atleast alert the police and your state's covid help team through twitter. This is plain black marketing.
