For Imlie, her faith lies in him more than the symbols of their marriage. She protects him, not just cuz he's her husband....but because she has developed a strong attachment to him. That strength of goodness in her and her ability to so effortlessly put him before herself is what disarms Adi and makes him feel all the more guilty.

Nicely put 😊 I must say though, despite the awful way Aditya has treated Imlie, he too has always put himself between Imlie and any dangers to her. We could go as far back as that fateful morning when the villagers were accusing them of sleeping together, he came forward to stand as a protective shield between her and their vitriol. When she was kidnapped, he came to stand between her and a bullet. He rushed from the mandap to save her from Shashank and before that point, he was worried she could be in danger if she had left on her own. And all the other times when he couldn't tolerate Imlie being hurt even in miniscule of ways (cut to the finger, bee sting). I think this is another reason why his guilt is so intense this time...the one time he wasn't around to protect her, he almost lost her forever. So it's clear Aditya has developed as intense of an attachment to Imlie as she has to him. Only difference is that he has always fought against its existence.

Absolutely. Aditya's protective nature has been on display throughout the story.....heck, in the very first epi, he even protected Malini from a splash of puddle water by stepping in front of her....lol

But with Imlie, Aditya's protective nature has dialed up to another level because he has faced more life and death situations with Imlie pretty much from the moment they met. There is an instinctual connect b/w them....as was evident in the scene you are mentioning when he steps forward to protect her from the villagers and then she runs to stand in b/w him and the mob moments later too. Even before they were forced into marriage, destiny had begun to tie them together....and post the marriage also, destiny has given umpteen signs that no matter what Aditya had planned for his life, it is Imlie he is destined to be tied to, worry for and care for. It is that very destiny that he fought so very hard against for so long by trying to put her down.....but ultimately it all boiled over in a moment where she almost died.

And that is why the guilt is hitting him harder this time.....he may have complained about her endlessly before that she ruins things for him by always getting into trouble and then he has to come rescue her.....but this one time when she badly needed him, he wasn't there. He is taking it doubly hard because he has always felt responsible for her deep down even if he was in denial.....now it's all bubbled to the surface in a burst of emotion. He may not consciously reflect on the way he was holding and hugging her like a loved one when she was almost dying.....but he may begin to reflect on the fact that Imlie is his responsibility and he cannot escape it anymore.

Adi has been quite awful and mean to Imlie for a long time but he is a tortured soul in many ways so I do understand where he's coming from too in a sense.....he is constantly tortured inside by the lie he is living. A man who pursues justice and truth in his career as a reporter has been defeated by a huge stroke of destiny. There was a recent scene in Pagdandiya when Imlie asks him to continue the naatak of playing husband-wife for the sake of her mother.....and he bursts out saying that when a man is forced to get married at gunpoint like he was, the level to which it kills his self-respect is not something she can comprehend. One could hear the anguish in his voice along with the anger.
