I totally hear you, Meera, but what makes this story different from the usual forced marriage angle was that Kuhu fought back every step of the way. She never sehen-ed atyachar like the usual ITV heroine, but had her own selfish motivations for wanting this marriage to work, with or without Kunal on board, didn't hold back from manipulating and blackmailing him to get her way at first, and and constantly called him out on his BS.
The writing was also in her favour in that sense, because despite all the horrible things he did, he never got the last word in their conflicts and she made damn sure he confronted what he had done to her every time he tried to forget it or take her support for granted. So for me, he was never really off the hook to begin with.
And he did apologise to her, when they had that conversation in the corridor right before MA's breakup and she absolutely killed him with her pain and dignity. The true hurdle for Kunal was verbally owning up to his feelings, instead of just expecting Kuhu to forget the divorce papers on her own without him saying anything. She knew he was sorry about what he had done to her, but she refused to give in until he came out and declared that he loved her.
I get where you're coming from, Sam. Funnily enough, your point actually brought me back to that episode where Kuhu blackmails Kunal for the first time. Does anyone remember that line where she says: "jab batsman pitch pe jaata hai aur bina kuch kiye hi wapas aa jaata hai"? Oh god, I think I died cry-laughing when she said that 😂. I have no clue how Kaveri said that with a straight face.
