But more than the people, it's also brands that have kept it alive as they continue to use it as a marketing gimmick.

On a lighter note, instead of women tying rakhis to their brothers on that day, may be they ought to handcuff them for one day at home, so that women can step outside and not feel the need to be protected.

Jeez, what am i reading?! what the hell is that? Is this the solution? Handcuff your own brother so woman can step out? This is probably the worst thing i have ever read.

I know why you asked me this question. But no, I'm not partisan about this.

Misogyny, patriarchy are common themes across various religions and cultures and it is wrong to no matter who does it.

Hijab/burkha also comes from the same place, and is also condemnable.

I never viewed it in musculine/feminine lenses.. As with all festivals, I look upon it with sentiment and as an occasion for a family get-together. (if it happens).

I don't have any brothers, and I used to tie rakhi bands to my cousins and a neighbor but all of them are settled or are studying abroad or cannot make it. We call each other up and my mother tells my first cousin to buy a rakhi for himself on my part lol, that's the most we do now. I have little baby male cousins, but we don't tie them rakhi because in relation, we're not exactly brother and sister lol.

I thought this topic was on Rakhi Sawant. 😆

But the concept of the whole protection doesn't bother me much. This tradition had started long ago when it was believed that women needed brothers/fathers/husbands protection. One of myths is that Draupadi tied a piece of cloth on Krishna's hand and on return he saved her from dishonor by covering her with endless saree during dyuth sabha. So that's how it came. Sisters tie brothers rakhi and brother promises to protect her when time comes. It's not only about that you need a brother to protect. It's that a brother will protect you when needed. I understand that same can be said with sisters too. Sisters can protect sisters. There is nothing wrong with that. I don't understand why someone would feel offended because of this? The purpose of this tradition is not that you need a brother to protect yourself its that if you have a brother he will protect you no matter what and you're thanking him for that.Nowadays it doesn't even matter what reason we celebrate this for. It's all about having fun and posting in social media.

Ps I completely agree with the sisters day.
