How safe is your credit card?

Credit and debit card fraud soared by 25% last year to reach a record high, according to the banking industry. Are you concerned about card security?

The Association of Payment Clearing Services (Apacs) said losses amounted to 535m during 2007, the first rise in three years.

The group said the figure was largely driven by a 77% jump in fraud carried out abroad, with criminals using stolen UK card details overseas, typically in countries that have not yet upgraded to chip and pin.

But losses also rose as cards were used dishonestly to buy more items over the phone, internet or by mail order.
