I'll fight ya!

As for being concerned about who I am funding. I think about it a couple of times, but then I feel any organization I fund will be better than paying taxes [interest free loans to my govt to blow people up]. Yep I miss Allofmp3.com where I delightfully funded the Russian Mafia. Now I use bittorrent so I can gleefully serve some nerdy computer users invest in fine Swedish and German Pr0n.

Hey what happened?? I thought some sort of new information was forthcoming about what all these counterfeit products actually fund but nothing has been posted so far as I see. I'm curious to know what they're funding.

The links are debatable.

Allofmp3.com the low cost Russian alternative to MP3 downloads which offered songs from 2 to 30 cents had alleged links to the Russian mafia. However, Oink.com which had the worlds largest mp3 library before being set up was a p2p sit set up by students.

ThePirateBay, ISOhunt, torrentspy and many other bit torrent sites are p2p sharing sites set up by students, tech geeks and similar individuals and organizations who have no criminal liaisons other than the belief in freedom of media.

So most of the online piracy is pretty much tame.

The street stalls in New York and across the world selling fake brand name merchandise, pirated DVD's are usually mom and pop stores finding their own little way to make some money. The suppliers could be people simply cutting the system or there are larger connection like the mob, mafia, yakuza etc.

Oh well until these guys reduce the prices of softwares, we Indians have no choice but to fund these activities.

As for DVDs of hindi films, the prices have been dropped so drastically especially those brough out by Moserbaer that I think noone will go for pirated ones. I think at Rs 49, pirated copies will cost more than the original.

And I don't think all the sites are for funding such activities. I used to use Limewire a lot and it's just a medium for P2P sharing. And the pirated CDs/DVDs that sell in India are mostly copied in Raipur, Chhatisgarh by small time illegal businessman. Yeah as for the first copy that gets out from the editing table, I think the guys procuring them must have got good contacts, so obviously some part of what you say is also true, but not all involved in the grey market are gangsters.

Oh, I forgot to mention earlier that I also bought one smuggled cell phone many many years ago cos it was significantly cheaper than with all the papers. But it was not counterfeit like the ones they sell where the phone looks the same but with fake parts inside.

Counterfeit goods are a big problem in most industries (even medicine), because it causes brands to lose money, it lowers the goodwill of a brand and the money itself often finances other illegal industries such as people trafficking, drugs etc Some goods can also be dangerous such as toxic materials used to produce fake toys for children etc.

Have you ever bought a counterfeit good? if so what, and what was your reason for doing so?

I never bought a counterfeit good, but in the case of medicines some of the medical shop owneres we can not believe.(I am telling about India) . there are a lot of products made be small scale industiries funded/ susidiries given by govt. which are good in quality but not cheaper but medium priced.(not telling about DVD, Electronic gadget).

I prefer to pay tax or duty which goes to the Government which inturn help poeple of the nation, I agree there is corruption in the system but not all are corrupted.

All items which are locally made is not toxic. They are/can be good or par with some of the branded items.
