What are your views on counterfeit goods? i.e imitation/fake goods such as handbags, sunglasses, watches, shoes, clothes, dvds etc

Counterfeit goods are a big problem in most industries (even medicine), because it causes brands to lose money, it lowers the goodwill of a brand and the money itself often finances other illegal industries such as people trafficking, drugs etc Some goods can also be dangerous such as toxic materials used to produce fake toys for children etc

Have you ever bought a counterfeit good? if so what, and what was your reason for doing so?

Yeah I have and I think most Indians will give the same answer. I've bought pirated VG & s/w cds/dvds.

The answer to why is easy. To save money. I can buy an original VG for Rs 1200/- or I can buy 10/12 pirated VGs for that price. Which one do you think I'll choose. Though I do buy a lot of original VGs also but sometimes I also go for pirated stuff. Moreover, sometimes there are VGs or s/w which are great but somehow the original don't reach the Indian market or even if it's available you don't readily see them, so then it becomes a compulsion to go for the pirated stuff.

As for the other products that you mentioned, no I've never bought them as I think the logo might be there but the quality won't be the same. And the most dangerous of them all is the spurious or fake medicines where they use harmful substances to create the colour and look of the original.

Sometime there is no option available because originals are not available at early stages and it is difficult to wait to watch the movie. We do not want to spend bunch of money to watch in theatres so we end up buying copies. Copies are pretty good not as good as originals. Originals are not available for rent so we end up renting copies even the shopkeeper prefers to sell the copies.

You haven't seen some of the stuff in NYC's Chinatown. The Louis Vuitton bag was better than the original 😆 You can actually show them a picture of the bag you want and they will make it to order😛

I am guilty of pirated DVDs and buying fake bags 😃 DVDs - because they are uncensored and bags because they are super cheap, yet look as good as the original. 😊

Guilty as charged! Have bought pirated DVDs before and for the same reason that everyone else has mentioned that it is readily available EARLY!

SJB : I have heard about the replicas in chinatown...I am going to take a picture next time and get it made to test 😉 😆

If Carrie Bradshaw can buy leather goods from the back of the truck in an alley than anyone can be assured of the quality. Why not, you get the most bang for the buck. Why pay hundreds more for just another stupid logo.

I do not buy pirated DVDs. They do not pass my quality standards. As a movie buff I watch a lot of them opening night or in theaters and buy DVD's of the best. Hindi movies I patiently wait for the DVD in stores.

However, fear not I am not always dependent on theaters and stores. Movies not high on my list, movies I want to just watch as pastime or by myself. Bittorrent here I come. I love Bittoreent. Bittorrent is like Christmas everyday. I can get a movie, an album, a game, a program, a book. If Bittorrent was human than Bittorent would be my soulmate.

Hhhmm it seems as if most of us have bought counterfeit goods (mainly dvd's) due to price, but in all fairness originals are not that expensive...it's just about waiting for them to be released on dvd.

A further question.....when buying these goods, does it ever raise the thought in your mind to what the money is funding? or how the actual goods were made?

Can't have him. We've been going steady for several years now. Lay off my man, woman.

Am just as guilty as everyone else. Ditto with everyone else regarding how expensive original products are, inavailability of original products etc etc. And no, I have never thought about what the money is funding. The pirated DVDs I think funds the lonely sad little indian store found in the middle of my all white neighborhood. Other than that, clueless. If anyone wants to share information, I'll take it. Regarding how the original goods were made...I couldnt care less if my fake bags are made of fake materials versus the pure leather skinned off a crocodile that a genuine louis vitton bag is made off...if it looks good, it doesnt even matter. For medicines, I make an exception. With anything you put inside of your body, you always want to make sure it's good quality.
