Watched a few episodes of Sacred Games and its really unsettling to watch in some parts.. Religious and political matters are laid in front of the audiences where no one is spared, everyone is corrupt.. from politicians to godmen, from policemen to a gali ka gunda.. So this was bound to ruffle a few feathers and which has happened again.. Though it is a fictional series, it cant be denied that majority is true..
Saif gave a statement where u can be killed in India for criticizing the govt.. This again brings us to the debate.. Is India and Indians in general this regressive?
Is India such a dangerous country to live in, atleast in south Asia, where u cant freely showcase ur content via film or TV?
Neighboring countries especially like to bring this point up time and again, that your country threatens people and become hyper for matters as simple as movies.. but the question is, is such volatile content aired in any other Asian country? where the govt, politicians, country and all religions are so openly criticized.. and if and when it airs will people of those country take it with a pinch of salt or react like the Indians are doing?
I am not aware much, but would like to know if such content is aired in countries like say China or Korea for e.g.? and whats the response?

Bold - I would like to know that too

I don't think there's freedom to criticize the gov there

Here they copy HW in content and expect same kind of freedom

On a separate note how is the Hong Kong film industry doing right now?

It's not that India allows freedom of speech and the movies and shows that even have such content are approved before being aired (by the obvious people). Everyone knows godmen and Government is corrupt but nobody wishes to change the system as they all are getting their share. In other countries, it depends if they are allowed to even air such shows. I have seen a South Korean show where they showed a North Korean official as corrupt.

India is a diverse country with a diversity of opinions. There are progressive and regressive people. The country in general is conservative, but not always regressive except in certain matters and in certain regions.

Power in India has always been controlling and corrupting. People in power politicians, goons, businessmen, and religious heads alike have always tried to censor media if it didn't align with their opinion. It can be dangerous to stand up to power in India.

No most Asian countries tend to have the same issues as India - corrupt power politics, censorship, and state control of media. China and North Korea are worse with absolute censorship. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia have their own set of issues. However, Japan, South Korea, Thailand are more progressive.

On the other hand other countries are doing much better. I would aspire for the level of free speech nations like Denmark or Netherlands have.

First a question, have you watched Narcos on Netflix ?

The story is indeed fantastic. A drug trafficker Pablo Escobar from a slum became one of the richest men in the whole world, they would fly a plane full of drugs every day and abandon it and it made sense for they made more profit in one day than the cost of the plane. He built a prison for himself complete with basketball court, prostitutes visiting and a casino. He held governments and people of Colombia literally hostage because of violence. It is incredible to watch. But it is real. It did really happen in Columbia and that too in the 80s/80s. Not that long ago. When most of us were kids.

So my answer to your question is truth is stranger than fiction. We really don't know. If you had told me a year ago about what is happening in American Politics today I would have laughed. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
