What was lacking in Aishwarya Rai's portrayal of Umrao Jaan?

😕 I don't understand why this gem got unnoticed. It wasn't that bad like the trash we have today. It is JP Dutta's best work in my opinion. I loved the songs. The acting was powerful. I feel this movie didn't get it's due. Also Aishwarya understood the nuances of Umrao. I feel this performance surpasses Jodhaa Akbar, Devdas, and even Raincoat. What do you think?

Agree Aishwarya's acting was excellent. The emotion she put into every scene was terrific.

I do think Abhishek was miscast and the music and dancing were lacking. JP should have never let Saroj Khan go. She was the original cheorographer but iirc, she was dropped over creative differences.

I have watched aishwarya's umraojaan..Her acting was fab and not to mention she looked ethereal but the movie sucked..It was too depressing for my liking..I haven't watched rekha's umraojaan but probably the comparison between the two must have marred it for aishwarya..When remakes are done comparisons r bound to be made , so this might be the reason that despite of doing her part right, she was never acknowledged for the movie

Aishwarya was superb as Umrao Jaan and Abhishek was great too. It's a pity the movie wasn't appreciated.

She was excellent in acting but this type of prostitute roles don't suit her. Her face doesn't have sultry courtesan look. She has soft beauty. Courtesan type s**tty roles don't suit her. Queen , empress type role suit her.
