As a couple, they do not have what it takes to carry out the responsibilities and commitments of a romantic relationship/marriage. But sometimes people change and things can work out. Maybe their expectations of each other have evolved as they spent time together without the shadow of marriage.

What is broken once cannot be fully fixed. A car that once breaks can only can go for a short period of time before it breaks again and needs polishing, consistently reminding you that it needs more lube.

^But if you can take a chance one should take that chance. Perhaps the distance has helped them sort things out better. A marriage can work if whatever that cause the divorce can be worked out. But I do not think they should give it a shot just for the kids...that will not work. It will work if they really want to be with each other!
