Padman Music Review Rating: 3.5/5 Stars (Three and a half stars)
Music Director/s: Amit Trivedi

It's easy to compose a song and fit it in any film, it's easier to compose a song for a film and call it situational even when it does not has any shelf life but it's the most difficult to make your audience enjoy situational songs outside the film. Amit Trivedi with Akshay Kumar's Padman continues this trend of making the situational songs entertaining. Here's our Padman music review!
Padman Music ReviewThe song brings back the melodious combo of Amit Trivedi & Arijit Singh. It's a post-wedding song describing the feelings of Lakshmikant (Akshay Kumar) for his wife Gayatri (Radhika Apte). Backed by beautifully written lyrics by Kausar Munir, the song is a delightful listen. Arijit's husky voice complements the situation of the song very well. This surely will sound even better in the film.
Sung by Mika, this song is the perfect title song we've seen recently in any film. As the name of the movies suggests how Akshay Kumar is some kind of superhero, this song describes how he's not your usual superhero. With the additional vocals of local women singing super hero' in the background gives this the required desi feel. It's amazing how Kausar Munir has made this song enjoyable with his quirky lyrics even after such an abstract title.
The master Trivedi takes the driver seat in this one. A sweet mixture of electronic music maintains the quirky pace of the song. Kausar's lyrics in this one hints at how two people have same ideologies. This will be a situational song and lyrics are hinting at the character of Akshay falling for Sonam or Sonam's one-sided love for Akshay in the film. Whatever the situation may be, the song will surely work well in the film.
Mohit Chauhan fans! He's back & Saale Sapne is the best song on the album for me. Amit Trivedi's trademark soothing music, Mohit's treat-to-the-ears voice & Kausar's dreamy lyrics make this song special. The song is a sweet little conversation with one's dream. You never understand what the song is about until you're not into half the song. This surely takes time to register but once it's there you want to hear more of it.
Perfect situational song! The only one from the album which I feel will sound better in the film. The inclusion of desi dhols & Indian instruments is a quirky touch by Trivedi and complements will to the lyrics by Kausar. It is a wedding song framing its reference from a girl's perspective. Beautifully sung by Yashita Sharma, Jonita Gandhi, Yashika Sikka & Rani Kaur the song will attract its target listeners and also will find its way through some daily soaps.
Usually, when you do a movie on serious issues, the only music which matters is background music. But, the makers of Padman made it clear, by roping in someone like Amit Trivedi, that they want some amazing songs too. The songs will surely add to the sweetness of the film trying to tone down the way of handling such sensitive issue in the film.
PadMan
The only thing missing from the "pragmatic love song Aaj Se Teri' is a mention of Aadhaar card. Kausar Munir's words are absolutely on point throughout the song, even as Amit Trivedi adorns the lines with an incredibly addictive raag bhimpalasi-based melody (the raag also takes your mind back to songs like Bol Na Halke Halke' and a folk-rich orchestration that sees some beautiful use of shehnai by Omkar Dhumal) and mandolin (Tapas Roy). Delivering the song in style is Arijit Singh. The ode to the movie's protagonist, The Pad Man Song' is characterised by another instrument Trivedi has been known to make splendid use of the harmonium (Akhlak Hussain Varsi). It's a fun song that derives its happiness from Mika Singh's rendition of Munir's description of Padman's "supper hero qualities. The ladies' chorus backing Singh does a fine job too.
It is in the rest of the soundtrack that the composer increasingly gravitates towards his tried and tested formulae. Sayaani' comes with the Navrai Majhi-esque celebratory vibe, salvaged by some good singing from Yashita Sharma, Jonita Gandhi, Yashika Sikka and Rani Kaur. The composer himself gets behind the mic for the dance track Hu Ba Hu' that is strictly functional. And Mohit Chauhan leads the best of the three Saale Sapne'. The pop rock base is sure to evoke memories of albums like Udaan in your head, but a few deft touches from the composer prevent the song from getting completely bogged down by familiarity.
Ever since the melodic track Aaj Se Teri was unveiled, expectations have been quite good from the music of PadMan. Though it is also understandable that a film like this won't necessairly be having a slew of romantic numbers. Still, with the kind of music that composer Amit Trivedi and lyricist Kausar Munir have put together for the opening track, one is reasonably assured that the remaining songs would be interesting as well.
This is the reason why you are pretty much entertained on hearing the full version of Aaj Se Terithat has Arijit Singh coming behind the mike and actually sounding quite different from his usual self. There is a bit of 'unplugged' feel that one gets in this song and it is a good thing actually because the instruments are kept at the minimal, hence allowing the lyrics and the vocals to take center-stage. Rest assured, it is also pretty worth it as the song immediately finds its way into one's playlist.
On the other hand it is all about rhythm and peppy flavor once Mika Singh takes over the mantle The Pad Man Song. A smile-through number that has additional vocals by Pragati Joshi, Deepti Rege & Mayuri Kudalkar, The PadMan Song has a good beginning to it, an impressive 'mukhda' to boast of and then good follow up in terms of 'antara' which ensures that as a package this one delivers well in establishing the characterization of PadMan. This one should feature well as a part of the film.
Amit Trivedi brings himself on board for singing Hu Ba Hu which is about two people being similar in their quest for excellence. One wonders whether the song is picturized on Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor since in the film both of them unite in their mission to manufacture and market low cost sanitary napkins across the length and the breadth of the country. Nonetheless, while none of that is explicitly talked about in the song, as a song it truly works and that is due to the perfect combination of lyrics, music and vocals that come together quite well.
Next to arrive is Mohit Chauhan and if not for the inspiration filled lyrics (that go well with the theme of the film), the core tune could well have been used for a romantic number instead. Call it the effect that Mohit Chauhan's voice has on the listeners but you find yourselves traversed to the mountains when this one plays. A sweet and simple tune that gets etched in your mind, Saale Sapne is yet another good track.
Last to arrive is Sayaani, a celebration song which has all the women coming together to congratulate a girl who is now on the cusp of turning into a young woman (and hence the lyrics). Yashita Sharma, Jonita Gandhi, Yashika Sikka & Rani Kaur come together for this situational piece that should arrive at an important juncture of the film. A feel good song, this one is as 'desi' as it gets and is set in the interiors of the country with a typical Amit Trivedi sound complimenting the overall feel.
What PadMan does quite well is balancing out the situational appeal as well as the commercial ingredients required for a Bollywood score quite well. This is where its biggest win lies.
Our picks: Aaj Se Teri, The PadMan Song, Hu Ba Hu, Saale Sapne
