Chapter 1
It was Sunday morning,everyone in khanna house were sleeping as it was a day off for every working men in the house. Shaurya woke up with a jerk when he heard noises in the neighbourhood. "Bloody hell!" Frustrated he got out of bed and came out of his room. "Awara! Mom! Vicky!" He screamed at the top of his voice. Awara came running to him. "Ji sir." "Tell the neighbours to stop making noise or I'll go there myself and make them stop!" Karuna ma came running hearing him scream. "Beta they are our new neighbours who moved in yesterday,they are still settling down...let's give them some time to adjust ...we can't scream and shout at them it will be rude." Karuna ma told him. "But mom they are too loud I can't sleep and even Simmy must be up!" Complained Shaurya. "Then come sleep in my room,you won't hear a thing and don't worry about Simmy she won't wake up easily unless I dump a bucket of water on her ." "It's ok mom I'll go for jogging around the block and please mom,don't wake Simmy up,she'll get up when she feels like it." Karuna ma shook her head unbelievably. "You have spoiled her Shaurya!" "Come on mom! She's my baby sister,she deserves to be spoiled!" Saying that he went back to his room and changed into his jogging suit. "Come fast,I'll get the breakfast ready." Karuna howled as Shaurya stepped out of the house.
In the neighbouring house,Meera was serving breakfast to her family. "Have you invited the khannas to the get to know party tonight?" Asked Sunil. "Not yet but I'll be sending a invitation card with Rahul after he's done eating." Replied Meera. "Di,you are coming with me na?" Asked Rahul. Mahek nodded in no. "Please na Di! I'm too little to go there with an invitation." Insisted Rahul. Mahek pulled his cheeks and smiled with a blink. "Thanks Di! You know,they have a big guava tree in their lawn which has big ripe guavas!" "How do you know?" Mahek asked him using her sign language. "I have seen it from our terrace." Grinned Rahul. Mahek loved guavas! "I'm gonna get you some Di!" Rahul told her.
Few minutes later,Mehak and Rahul baba were standing by the door of khanna mansion. Mahek was panicking which she did every time when she met new people. "Don't worry Di i'll handle everything my way." Rahul assured her. Mahek nodded and wiped the sweat on her temple. He rang the door bell. Simran opened it. "Hello! I'm Rahul,your new neighbour and this is my Mahek Di!" Simmi smiled. "Oh hi! Nice to meet you guys I'm simran,come on in!" Rahul took Maheks hand and stepped inside. "Mom! Look who's here!" Howled simmi. Her eyes again landed on Mahek. "You are so pretty and this lahenga you are wearing enhances your beauty!" Simmi was in love with Mahek already and couldn't stop praising her. Mahek just nodded and smiled. "Lahenga suit is my Di's favourite attire,she wears it all the time." Added Rahul. Simmi was wondering why isn't Mahek talking? Karuna came rushing out. "Who is it Simmi?" "Our new neighbours mom!" Karuna smiled at once when she saw Mahek standing there looking like an angel. Simmi did the intro. "Hello beta." Karuna ma greeted them. Mahek nodded with a smile. "Aunty,we have organized a get to know party at our place tonight,mom and dad has sent an invitation." Rahul said and handed Karuna the card. "Oh that's so sweet of them! We will definitely come." Said Karuna. "Come have a seat,Awara bring beverages and snacks please!" Howled Karuna ma. Mahek handed her a canister. "What is this bacchey?" Mahek looked at Rahul for him to reply. "Aunty,that's kheer! My Di makes it really nice." Rahul told them. "Arey waah! Thank you Mahek! That's so sweet of you!" Mahek only smiled. Vicky stepped in the living room and stilled when he saw Mahek. "Wow!" Is all he could say and kept his mouth open. Simmi went to him and whispered in his ears. "Vicky bhaiya,stop thinking what you are thinking because it ain't gonna happen! I have reserved her for bhai!" Vicky quickly closed his opened mouth in dismay. Simmi giggled and went to sit beside Mahek. "Tell me more about yourself Mahek ..are you studying or working..." when Mahek used her sign language,everyone's mouth dropped open in shock. "Sorry simran Di,my Di doesn't talk...she had an accident when she was very little and since then she doesn't talk,I do all the talking on behalf of her." Simran eyes welled up. "I'm so sorry .." unable to control her tears she ran to her room. Maheks countenance fell and she looked sad. Karuna ma caressed her head lovingly. "One day you'll talk beta,mark my words." Maheks face lit up and she hugged Karuna ma. Rahul was happy to hear that as well. Mahek looked towards simrans bedroom. "Don't worry beta she'll be fine..she's a little sensitive that's all." "Ok Aunty we should go,see you all tonight ." Said Rahul while taking her Di's hand and standing up. Karuna nodded with a smile. Just then Harish came rushing towards them wearing a smile. "Vicky turn the tv on! Khanna real state is on the news! Karuna our company did it again! We made 50 million dollars of profit just now!" Karuna almost fainted hearing that. Vicky turned the tv on. Khanna companies were all over the news. "I'm gonna call bhai! Bhai!!" Screaming,vicky ran towards Shaurya's room. Simmi also came running out of her room. "Mom! Dad! My results are out and guess what? I scored the highest marks in the entire school!" Simmi danced in excitement. Mahek smiled and gave her a thumps up. Simmi threw her a flying kiss. "Harish ji,this girl is auspicious for our house." Karuna ma said softly. They stood and watched her and Rahul step out of the house. "I think so too!" Replied Harish. "How can God punish such innocent soul like her? What was her fault? Why would god do this to her?" Simmi was in tears again. Harish and Karuna comforted her. Just then Shaurya came out of his room. He already received a call from his assistant manager regarding the news. Khanna family congratulated him. "This all happened because of Mahek." Said Karuna. "Mahek? Who's Mahek?" Asked Shaurya. "She's our new neighbour bhai,you missed her by a minute! She just left." Simmi told him. "This is the fruit of my labour,why are you giving credit to some Mahek?" Shaurya asked his mom. "She is a good omen to this house and I came to know this now." Harish and Simmi agreed with her. Even Vicky believed that. So many good news since she had stepped in the house. Shaurya shook his head in disbelief. "She's pretty too bhai! I reserved her for you!" Simmi whispered in his ears. "Do you still wanna go out with your friends or no?" Simmi pouted. Shaurya pulled her cheeks. "Paagal ladki Kuch bhi bolti hai!" Simmi hugged him. "But I love her bhai,she's very pretty and very sweet!" "Ok fine then get her married to vicky,she'll come and stay here for the rest of her life!" Simmi made an ugly face at him,Shaurya chuckled. "I'm ever ready to marry her guys!" Said vicky while fixing his collar. Simmi gave him her deadliest glare,vicky swallowed. "I was just joking yaar! Yeh ladki will never get me married!" Shaking his head he walked away. Everyone laughed.
Shaurya's phone rang and he came out in his balcony. Just below his balcony,there was a beautiful flower patch. Mahek was trying to catch butterflies from the flower garden. "Di Chalo na!" Cried Rahul. But Mahek was so into catching the butterflies that she really didn't care about anybody saying anything to her. "Fine! I'm going you come after you are done!" Rahul left her there and walked towards the gate and disappeared. Shaurya saw her from his balcony. He thought she must be Mahek whom his mom called good omen. He hid behind the pillar and tried to get a glimpse of her face. But all he could see was her back. Minutes passed by. A little blue butterfly landed on her nose. She blinked at it and it fluttered to her ear. A big yellow butterfly gently floated over and landed on her head. Soon a whole swarm of them floated up and down around her like a swirl of multicolored petals. Mahek danced spreading her arms wide. The butterflies sat on her arms. Mahek laughed but not a sound came from her mouth. she smiled as clouds of colorful butterflies flew over her head. She grabbed at a pink one, but it flitted away. Yellow, blue, pink, and white butterflies flew gracefully over her head. Some of the butterflies landed on tree branches. Mahek cupped her hands and crept up behind a black and orange butterfly. It flew quickly away. The beautiful butterflies were everywhere. They hovered over the swimming pool,covered the trees like blossoms, and even dotted the path. All this while Shaurya was watching her but couldn't see her face properly. He was desperate to see her face so he came out from behind the pillar. "Suno! Hello! Can you turn please! Over here,face this side!" Startled by his sultry voice,she fell in the flower garden! Shaurya ran inside and rushed outside the house in the lawn. Trapped in the shrubs and unable to free herself she cried. Shaurya found her squeezing her eyes shut and crying. "Are you ok? Sorry I didn't mean to startle you! Here take my hand and get up." His deep voice in her ear sent a warm shiver down her spine, stirring up a foreign feeling. She opened her eyes and met his. The impact was so strong he was amazed at how he couldn't take his eyes off of her. He freed her keeping his eyes intact to her face. Her eyes were a dusty brown, too large for her small, narrow face and she stared right into him as if she knew every thought that passed through his head. He tried to take a deep breath, but to his alarm, discovered that he couldn't. "Damn! She's so beautiful!" He said in his heart. And Mahek couldn't turn away from the eyes that held her. Eyes as deep, as Dark as the night, yet there was something that sparked with warmth, that kept those eyes from being cold. Everything for Shaurya stopped. The beat of his heart, the pump of his lungs, the march of time. Seconds later, thankfully, it all resumed. Much more violently than previously. His stomach flipped. Everything about her exuded a certain calmness, an unfathomable tranquillity. Her body, her face, and her mesmerizing eyes all came together to form a lively painting of timeless allure. He came to his senses when she gribbed his hand and got up. "I'm Shaurya and you are?" More tears formed in her when she couldn't utter a word. She quickly let his hand go. "Look miss..I didn't wanted to scare you or anything..I just wanted to.." Before he could finish she ran from there! "Oye ladki at least tell me your name!" He ran his hand through his hair. "Strange girl! She didn't even say thank you." He looked at the gate where she had disappeared from. He found her dupatta stuck in the shrubs. He picked it up shoved it inside his jacket. "Awara!!" He called. Awara came running to him. "Is she our new neighbour?" Awara looked here and there. "Who sir?" He asked with a confused look when he found no she there. "The the girl who just left." "Oh that one! Yeah she's our new neighbour,her name is Mahek." Shaurya indicated him to go.
That evening the khannas made their way towards sharma house. Everyone were surprised to see Shaurya dressed up for the party and joining the rest without any complain."Maheks presence is changing him mom." Simmi whispered in her mom's ears. Karuna smiled. "Didn't I say she's a good omen to our family?" Simmi nodded happily. They were greeted at the gates by Sunil and Meera sharma. "Please come inside." Shaurya's eyes were searching for Mahek. "Bhai,are you looking for something or someone?" Asked naughty Simmi. "Not really! Why would I look for someone?" But Simmi knew he was looking for Mahek. They went inside in the hall where other neighbours were gathered. Shaurya and vicky got busy talking with the other businessmen that were present there. "Hey Simmi Di!" Rahul came and hugged her. "Hey Rahul! I can't see your Di,where' is she?" "She's in the kitchen,she'll come with the beverages soon." Simmi nodded with a smile. The hall was crowded with hardly any room to walk. Meera and Karuna got busy with their chit chatting. And on the other side Harish was busy with Sunil and the others. Simmi got bored so she followed Rahul to the kitchen. "Hellooo!" Mahek turned when she heard Simmi's voice. A smile crept on her face and she nodded her head. "You guys talk I'm going!" Saying that Rahul left from there. Mahek spoke to her using her sign language. "This is fun! Can you teach me more? Because I really want to be in touch with you." Said Simmi. Mahek nodded happily as she wanted to be friends with her also. "But for now we can chat through text messages." Saying that Simmi entered her cell number on Maheks phone. "Di! Bring the drinks please!" Rahul howled from the doorway. Mahek and Simmi brought the drinks out and started serving. "Mahek beta bring the beverages here." Called Sunil. Mahek carried the tray of beverages and served the men present there. Shaurya noticed men were just gawking at her from head to toe. He didn't like it. Mahek looked indeed very pretty in her white ghagra. Shaurya and vicky were both lost in her beauty. "Abh yeh dono ko Kya huwa? Why are they gawking at me?" Thought Mahek. She handed them their glasses. "Thank you miss sharma!" Said Shaurya expecting her to say something. She just nodded and left. "Man Does she even talk? Whenever I say something,All she does is nod her head! Strange girl!" Vicky wanted to tell him that Mahek was a mute but he kept quite.
Later,dinner was served and everyone started eating. Shaurya was just stealing glances of Mahek. He didn't know why he was getting so attracted to this girl. Singles were eating on one table and the married couples on the other. "Rahul,go tell your Di to come and eat with us." Shaurya told him when he noticed Mahek was only serving others and not eating. "Oh she said she will eat when everyone else is done." Rahul told him. Shaurya saw Mahek going towards the kitchen. Excusing himself he quietly followed behind her. "Miss sharma!" His voice sent butterflies in her tummy and the tray from her hand almost fell but Shaurya grabbed it on time and put it away. "Let's go eat! Everyone's having dinner and you are working? Leave everything and come with me!" He grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the kitchen. "I can't eat now please leave my hand everyone's watching us!" She said in her heart. But Shaurya was already pulling a chair beside him and making her sit. "They will make a great couple won't they Di?" Rahul whispered in Simmi's ears. "Hi5! That's what I was thinking!" Simmi and Rahul were in for a hi5. "Will you eat or you want me to feed you?" Asked Shaurya. Mahek felt embarrassed and shy. "Why is he after me?" She thought as she started eating. Everyone were talking and laughing but Mahek was very quite. "Won't you say something?" Shaurya asked her. Rahul diverted his attention whenever he asked Mahek to say something. When dinner ended,Mahek and Simmi cleared the table. "I can give you a hand if you like" said Shaurya. Mahek nodded in no. "Please don't nod your head,say something for god sake!" His raised tone brought tears to her eyes,hiding from everyone she ran to her room. Shaurya knew something was not right. "Tonight I will find out why the hell she doesn't talk." He followed her to her room and locked the door behind him. His sudden appearance had frightened her. She grabbed a broom and showed it to him . "I'll bash you if you come near me!" She said in her heart. "Please don't be scared...I'm not a bad guy...it's just that your silence is bothering me..I want to hear your voice miss sharma...can you at least say hi or even say my name?" More tear sprung in her eyes,she threw the broom and sat on the bed. Shaurya sighed and scanned her room. "Nice room,colour combination is perfect." She still didn't utter a word. He neared her,drawing her dupatta from his blazer,he gave it to her. "You left this in the flower garden." She didn't take it. Shaurya saw the tears rolling down her cheeks. "Miss sharma what's wrong? Why are you crying? Am I bothering you?" He asked while sitting beside her. She sobbed. "I'm a mute! I can't talk anymore! If you come to know about this,you'll never come near me! You'll leave me just like the others did." She said in her heart. Shaurya wanted to wipe her tears,his hands reached for her face but then he pulled it away. He gently placed the dupatta on her head and gave the edges of it in her hand. Mahek twitched her head and saw him Looking at her. "If you don't wanna talk it's fine...but please don't cry!" Mahek quickly wiped her tears. "Good girl! Woh I wanted to say when you came home today...so many good things happened." Shaurya told her every little thing that happened that day. Finally Mahek smiled. "So thank you!" He said,still expecting her to reply. "Won't you say you are welcome? Tumara maun vrath hai Kya? (Are you observing the vow of silence?) Mahek grabbed a note pad and began writing. "Go before they catch you here in my bedroom and bombard you with so many questions." Shaurya chuckled. "So it's really your maun vrath! Fine! Give me your number I'll text you...at least we can chat right?" He asked. Mahek wrote again. "I don't give my contact info to strangers! Now go before I break the vow of my silence and scream for help!" Shaurya raised his brows. "Bloody hell! she can write so much I wonder what will happen if she opens her mouth?" He stood up and fixed his tie. "I..I better get going before you scream and accuse me of something else!" He disappeared behind the door. Mahek laughed literally.
