Why Is India So Hateful Towards Its Female Celebrities?

On the internet, anything can act as a trigger political policies, a bi-polar dress (blue-black or white-gold?), the regrettable blue whale challenge or Oscar fails. In the Indian context of things, this list of triggers is a tad strange. As much desi trolls love a colour-changing dress, nothing affects them as deeply as a female celebrity. It's either that or demonetisation. There is no in between.

The last few months have been a study in how Indians can't help but take everything personally. Like an intrusive colony aunty or uncle, who on a post-meal stroll, passes judgement on everything from the working girl who always returns past ten or the non-sanskaari college student who visits her balcony every half-an-hour to smoke a cigarette. Sadly, aunty or uncle cannot knock sense into either. As compensation, they frequent the social feeds to unleash their tirade of abuse on...drumroll... FEMALE CELEBRITIES.

So, they take it personally when Mahira Khan smokes with the respected son of his favourite actors, Rishi and Neetu Kapoor. Taapsee Punnu's bikinis enrages them, and how dare Esha Gupta pose with nothing but pomegranates to cover her nipples? That's ruining the sanctity of a pomegranate the juice of which has been imbibed by Mr. Uncle's or Aunty ji's family, much like their teachings on morality.

2_trollculturepadmavati_idiva

It is important to note here that this flourishing culture of hate is not the sole doing of a particular gender alone; it's men and women alike. A glorious example of "sisterhood was seen when Deepika Padukone's unibrow presented itself to the world. Seconds after the release of the Padmavati poster, the unibrow became an entity of its own. Much like the peach fuzz of that one girl who is "OMG! So hairy.

4_trollculturepadmavati_idiva

By the power vested in these mean girls by the rule of the Internet, they blew bubbles of hate comments. The verdict? "Dusky Deepika looked "ugly, and "Aishwarya Bachchan would have been a better choice. Speaking of which, reader, would you do us a favour and hark back to the time when Aishwarya attended Cannes immediately after giving birth to Aradhya? We are tearing up here thinking about all the body-positive comments that serenaded the former Miss World.

If the question isn't obvious, let us spell it out for you Why are Indians so hateful towards their female celebrities? Even worse, why are their choices from smoking a cigarette to wearing a bikini completely disregarded? If Mahira's cigarette qualifies to be national concern, then what she wears is inconsequential. The custodians of morality will judge her, nonetheless. If she dares to step beyond the realm of what is considered "womanly, she will be subjected to lewd comments targeting the love bites on her back and the length of her dress. The assumption is that Mahira should have known better; she is a celebrity, after all.

The trolls have a simple theory: celebrities are public commodities so s**t-shaming, name calling and sexist comments are collateral damage. It comes with the job. Women have it worse, considering our genders' exclusive relationship with being objectified. Malaika Arora in her sheer, butt-hugging Manish Malhotra was a ticking time-bomb. As the mother of two, her sexy outfit was a violation of her maternal contract, as the trolls pointed out. Not to mention that after bombarding the actress's feed with vile comments about codes of dressing, most men would have saved the said picture in their you-know-what folder.

The only thing more incapacitating than male haters is the alarming number of women who find "free choice offensive. Nargis Fakhri's curves, for instance, led to a collective meltdown. Women enquired if the actress was pregnant despite the absence of a visible belly. Sure, it could have been plain inquisitiveness but TBH, it really wasn't. When a question of an alleged pregnancy is affixed with word "fatty, it isn't a positive question. On all accounts, it is an insult.

Now take Esha Gupta, for example. Her semi-nude pictures drew maximum flak from men. As Esha herself pointed out, "When a woman goes bold, their manhood is challenged. Cue in the lecherous stares that most women experience when they step out wearing clothes that are borderline revealing.

In all scenarios, the shame is real. Our female celebrities are sandwiched between s**t-shaming and physical ridicule. Safe to say, when it comes to feedback, they really are spoilt for choice.

Is misogyny prevalent? Yes undoubtedly.
But I can show a number of screenshots of people calling names and gay-shaming male actors too. So online bullying of celebs is not a gender issue as far as I have seen.

Because India is a highly patriarchal, misogynist society.
They hate females more if they happen to be part of public life or any position of power. The hate against female politicians, activists, lawyers, writers is even more vitriolic.

Just go through TLs of Shehla Rashid, Rana Ayyub, Barkha Dutt, Nidhi Razdan or see latest celebration of Gauri Lankesh murder openly on social media.

Indians can't tolerate females having a mind of their own or any agency.

Female celebrities are objectified any way and thought of as disposable, replaceable, loose, characterless. Movies and TV shows and celeb media also perpetuate such stereotypes. For eg they are not half as harsh on a male behaving deviant or speaking too much as harsh they are on a female. See how Kangana is psycho for them but others are lovable Bhai or Baba or lovable wild beast, lovable bad boy.

Media and fans talk in terms of drab wife, other woman, gold digger etc but hardly put onus on men. Rather men are projected as victims. I mean just check channels on Youtube related to Bolly gossip. See difference in language used for men and women.

Female celebrities are just punching bag and objects. Hated by men and women alike. But secretly envied or desired due to their looks and fame.

The only women South Asian cultures like are dead (killed in womb itself) or quiet, pliant puppets. That is the harsh truth of the culture here.

How many times are males abused as badly as females?

When Ranbir-Mahira pics came out, Mahira was abused way more. No one abused Ranbir for smoking.

Sunny-Dimple video leaked and latter was abused way more. And her family was also trolled. Akshay was taunted about his MIL, Twinkle was taunted about her mom. I don't recall people trolling Dharmendra, Bobby, Karan Deol etc over Sunny Deol!

Even when men are abused that is also indirectly abusing women by dragging their mothers, sisters in it. Teri maa, teri behen is all they get. That abuse is for them or their female relatives?

In all Amitabh-Rekha-Jaya videos, topics, I see people bashing either Jaya or Rekha but rarely calling out Amitabh.

Of course celeb abuse has gender issues too.

People have a problem with the 'me too' hash tag as well. I have seen a lot of men tweeting and calling it a cry for attention. Even on Fb, men are saying why are these women speaking up now and where were they wheb these things happened. The patriarchy and misogyny is so evident.

Not only in India,
all over the world.

Men hate women
Women hate women

No unity amongst women sadly. I myself have seen so many girls bitching about other successful women?!

Why??

Men have come up on top because they support each other

I saw and also saw replies that said YES it's a cry for attention at least now. I dunno honestly until capital punishment is meted out and carried out swiftly across all civilized countries not even 1% will it reduce

Does this writer realize that she has written ageist article?

I understand the whole issue fueling this article but why restrict it by saying it is uncle or aunty who are being hateful.Sorry writer how can anyone take this article seriously unless you can prove that for sure the people who are trolling belong to certain age group.

Most people who trolled Mahira (from comments I read) seemed to have issue with the fact that woman from one religion wanted to smoke in backless dress with man belonging to another religion. The issue was far more deeper than woman smoking or wearing less clothes. Making it only about woman trolled is really giving incomplete picture.

I am not going comment on others because like I said writer has rendered this article ageist and now can't be taken seriously. As for Deepika's poster she is playing central character in one of the biggest budgeted movie. People are going to comment on it. Good or bad comes with territory. Sorry author nice try.

Trolls, I have learnt in my limited exposure on SM, don't belong to certain age group or even sex. They seem to flourish on SM soil. 😆
