The Supreme Court ruling on triple talaq will start a new chapter in empowerment of Muslim women in India, said Bollywood celebrities who hailed the verdict on Tuesday. The apex court, by a 3:2 majority judgment, held triple talaq being practised by the Muslim community as "unconstitutional", "arbitrary" and "not part of Islam".

Here's what some Bollywood celebrities tweeted:
Dia Mirza: A win for democracy! Historic day for women's rights in our country. Equality, triple talaq, human rights, Supreme Court.

Kabir Bedi: Since Supreme Court has declared triple talaq "unconstitutional", why does Parliament have to enact a new law to void it.
Madhur Bhandarkar: Welcome judgement by Supreme Court to declare triple talaq as unconstitutional. This will start a new chapter in empowerment of Muslim women.

Sehban azim
Triple Talaq is in Islam and cannot be amended. But the issue is not the law instead how it has been practised. A lot of cases have come out where the way has been practised is entirely wrong. No one, according to any Islamic law, is allowed to give talaq just in one go just by saying talaq thrice. According to the Islamic law, there is a proper procedure that is to be followed no matter what and it's a procedure of 6-9 months where you make the couple meet and sit and get them to rethink about the decision too. Once you are through with that span of time and if both the individuals are still standing their grounds to get separated, a talaq is viable. Until the end of this entire process, there's an option for the respective husband and wife to withdraw the entire process and come back as a couple as well. Rather than creating a frenzy or making a hue and cry for Islamic laws or condemning them, the Government needs to educate and help the ignorant to provide more awareness towards the right practice of talaq in exactly the same manner that the Government is spreading awareness about dowry practices in our country.

I feel it's a great move and one that was much needed! Marriage is an institution which requires a lot of effort and divorce cannot and should not be as convenient as just saying a word. Also, what made it all the more unfair was that it was one-sided and so a man could just divorce a woman at a whim. I am glad that the Supreme Court has taken such a decision and I hope that it brings about a positive change by giving equality to both genders and also make decisions like divorce better thought out.

What sehban said is right n thats triple talaq n nt what every one think it is " talaq talaq n talaq" n its void 😆

No talaq is void if its nt done infront of maulana within a gap of 6-9 months with d presence of both hubby n wife thats what quran says n if there is triple talaq then there is " Khulla for women too , Islam has always given respect n haq to women jus like men bt then there are chauvanistic pigs everywhere!

Bt then like in everything else Islam is d most misunderstood religion on this process too n i can only blame some of the fellow muslims who twist evn d words of allah for their own benefit !

That's interesting...So a woman also can say 'talaq' and separate if she doesn't want to be in the marriage?

There are definitely some things which are not clear in Islam...For ex, if women are given equal respect and value then why do they need 2 women witnesses for every 1 man witness?

Muslims are most poor and least educated community in India ( Govt report 2011) and it's high time they give more importance to Constitution than Islamic laws which are highly twisted by their own community due to poor education and poverty .
Uniform civil code should be the next target for govt and then strict two child policy

Thank you for answering patiently...It is still not like how the man gets his divorce, isn't it? Why is it the man can just say a 'talaq' be it in whatever the time duration, but a girl has to go through a different procedure for the same divorce?

Why only fathers, uncles and brothers? Why not mothers, aunts and sisters as witnesses for the marriage?

I was asking about a totally different type of witnesses...I am talking about the status of the women's testimony...Why do they need two women witnesses while one man is enough to testify?
