Neena Gupta says Indian men still want a ‘VIRGIN WIFE’; recalls incidents from her own family

Seasoned actress Neena Gupta has consistently spoken out against the enduring patriarchy that influences women's experiences in India. In a recent discussion, the Panchayat star discussed how, despite societal advancements, many women still face limitations in their choices after marriage, often due to family expectations and pressure from in-laws.

Speaking with Shubhankar Mishra, Neena highlighted that certain deeply rooted attitudes persist.

Addressing the concept of purity and its continued significance in Indian society, Neena stated plainly, "They want a virgin wife."

When questioned if virginity remains a significant issue in contemporary India, she responded candidly. "What has changed now? Are you talking about India? Who says that people are open? A lot of things have not changed in our country. Women still touch their father-in-law's feet after putting pallu over their heads. You and I are minorities, we are not the real India. People like us who dress well and talk nicely are not India."

Her comments highlighted the disparity between urban perceptions and the realities on the ground, indicating that progressive areas do not necessarily represent the everyday experiences of most women throughout the country.

Neena didn't speak in generalities. She shared actual instances from her extended family to demonstrate how control frequently infiltrates daily domestic life.
