It's a taller ask to make Salman act

Raja Sen:
Salman Khan Is The Worst Thing About Tubelight

This time, it's Sohail Khan's turn, and he gets to outshine his celebrated brother simply by keeping a straight face. Tubelight is a Salman Khan film that kept me longing to have Sohail back on screen, and those are words I'd never thought I'd type.

Tubelight is the story of a developmentally disabled man whose superpower is making constipated sounds.

The film is set in a small, fictional hamlet, where Laxman is loved and laughed at in equal measure, until one day a travelling magician uses him in a trick and shows him he can move a bottle with his mind.

This leads to Salman trying to move mountains and stop wars by sticking his arms out and grunting earnestly, over and over. These are supposed to be emotionally hardcore scenes depicting naive wholesomeness and a good heart. They come across unbearably farcical, crippled by what is possibly the worst performance of Salman's chequered career.
The film is rendered unwatchable because of the leading man.

Alongside the Khan brothers who look to have been inflated with tyre-pumps, there is a strong cast. It's the Salman Khan show, and here he is bobbing his head and widening his eyes, with all the expressiveness of a hurriedly drawn thumb-puppet.

Salman Khan is a liability in this bland film
Namrata Joshi

The biggest letdown, however, is Salman himself. Crying copious tears alone can't a good performance make. His handling of the child-man is all about pulling some embarrassingly weird faces at the camera. Not for a moment do you feel invested in Laxmanneither his little joys nor his gargantuan plights.

Kunal Guha:

Playing a specially-abled character onscreen is a gamble a little excess could translate as caricature, a little less could be read as lack of effort. While Salman Khan crinkles his face with much determination to furnish this desi Gump, cumulatively, it doesn't add up. That Khan had redeemed himself in the last few years and had with every film, inched closer to becoming an actor from a star, feels like a wasted cause as this one reverses that evolution. In certain scenes, he appears so puzzled, dazed and disconnected, even Sohail Khan seems actor like an actor with conviction while sharing the screen with him.

Uday Bhatia:

It's nearly always excruciating when an actor with limited talent plays a character with limited intelligence. Normally, the charge against Salman is that he doesn't do anything; here, he does so much that you'll be begging for him to go back to his minimalist ways.

🤣.

Salman fans should bash Salman and not SRK or Sohail. He is the one who should take the blame if Tubelight flickers.

At the centre of Tubelight's balance sheet is Salman Khan. He is both the film's biggest asset and its greatest liability. Salman's acting limitations are painfully evident in this film and I kept wondering what Tubelight might have been if Lakshman had been played by Irrfan Khan or Nawazuddin Siddiqui, or even Hrithik Roshan under his father's controlled direction.

In fact, Salman here seems to be drawing on Hrithik's Rohit from Koi Mil Gaya and the contrast between the two stars' abilities is almost embarrassing.

ROHIT BHATNAGAR:

Flickered and gradually fused

Salman's constipated face throughout the film is a big hurdle. Imagine, this time Sohail Khan looks much better than him on screen.

Overall, Tubelight is a major disappointment. It is unlike any Kabir Khan film, and not in a good way. Watch Tubelight since you have no other film to watch over this long weekend as Salman has managed to block 4000 screens for his film.

Sukanya Verma:

The star tries too hard to act cute bursting in an angry pout or puerile tone when not feigning embarrassment about his perennially unzipped pants aimed to bare his slow-minded condition, exaggerated klutziness and lack of guile.
It takes a good deal of suspension of disbelief to accept middle-aged men as naujawans -- and Salman and brother Sohail Khan, playing siblings on screen too, in all their beefy-bodied, puffy-faced, vest and khaki shorts-clad enthusiasm don't really look the part.

Manisha Lakhe:

As fans of Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Dabanng the audience too stares at Salman Khan's unrestrained facial contortions on the screen and pray inside, 'Stop overacting! Take off shirt! Beat up bullies! Stop crying! Why are you so bloated?'

Salman Khan's brother Sohail Khan appears, but the magic doesn't. Salman Khan is supposed to be the village idiot, a Kumaoni version of Barfi (2012 film directed by Anurag Basu, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra), but you are just taken aback at the unrestrained facial contortions and strange string puppet like body movements and you hope something will happen to turn this Barfi gone rancid into the awesome fighting machine or lovable Bajrangi once again.

You begin to chant in your head, 'Take it off! Take it off!' hoping Salman will take off his shirt and fight the village bullies and redeem himself from the awful depiction of a mentally challenged person.

His stupidity is based on what Gandhiji said to him in person: Conviction ('Yakeen') can move mountains, and it lives in your heart. And of course Laxman takes it literally, and the audience suffers this bizarre Superman on the ground waiting to take off posture in the name of 'yakeen'. We also suffer really bad jokes with the little boy's name which mispronounced sounds like 'shit' literally. Bad childish jokes apart, it doesn't help when the star that you love looks more bloated than buff, you wish someone would push him into a weight loss routine.

Sohail's Bharat is off to fight the war leaving behind his 'smaller' elder brother Lakshman: A slow-thinking child who magically grows up to become Salman Khan acting nitwity -- it is Tubelight become Tropic Thunder. 🤣
