Anyhow, one thing is clear. In comparison with the generality of the shows, Peshwa Bajirao's TRPs are dismal. But within Sony, it seems to be in quite a bit of company! To see that the channel toppers are the Kapil Sharma show and CID in its 20th year says it all, I suppose.

I am really concerned about the likely longevity of Peshwa Bajirao. Maharana Pratap, also a Sony show some 4 years ago, did very much better. Any, que sera sera, whatever will be will be!

You're most welcome, aunty :) I just did a Google search for the ratings of Sony shows for Week 15 of 2017 and I came across a few sites that had put up ratings for all shows of major channels. I think there is an FB page too that gives these ratings. I'll do another search and give you the links. Then you can just check those pages when you wish to :)

Yes, the show is not a bad performer if we look at just Sony's shows. Still, it would have been reassuring if the show had the best rating among the channel's fiction shows...

My dear Manasi,

Now don't cry, there is my good girl! This the prarabdha of all good Hindi TV, and so how can Peshwa Bajirao be an exception?

But I still feel strongly that a different Baji would have done wonders for the show. Think of Rajat in Prithviraj Chauhan, Faisal Khan in Maharana Pratap, and Siddharth Nigam in CAS. All three shows did very well on the strength of the charisma of the junior lead. Most recently, Shani is riding high solely on the presence and performance of the 13 year old Kartikeya Malaviya.

Now no one can do that with this skinny malnourished looking Dobby look alike of Baji as the male lead. Similarly, the young Ranjit Singh, though far better in terms of overall presence than this Baji, is flat and lacks charisma. So the TRPs are stuck at 0.4, whereas those for this show have falled from 0.6 to 0.5.

As for your question, or rather lament. I can do no better than simply reproduce something I wrote on my current thread in the Chandra Nandini forum, in response to a similarly anguished post from Shailaja, though she has approached the problem from the opposite angle, Do take a look at it.

Shyamala Aunty

You see, my dear Shailaja, what you recommend, though it would be manna from heaven for us, has rarely worked in Hindi TV.

Witness all the superb to very good Yashraj shows - Powder, Kismat, Khote Sikkey, Seven, Rishta.com. - and now Peshwa Bajirao, none of which ever got to a TRP of 1. Yashraj closed its TV division after two years of this string of disappointments.

So, if any PH was asked to opt for too much of good sense, they would jib like a horse with too tight a bit in its mouth.😆 What they usually opt for is a fixed and time-tested template of mostly melodrama, no matter whether it is a so-called historical or a contemporary tale. As my Lashykanna would say - undoubtedly wisely nodding her head for emphasis😉- what the so-called TRP aunties like is Drama with a capital D. Not romance, not history, not wars, not politics. Only Drama.

And this works most of the time. Ekta's Pavitra Rishta ran for over 3 years very successfully on a budget that was probably 10% of that of Chandra Nandini.

So when such an expensive production is taken up, they cling even more firmly to the formula. It is not only in this show, where they seem to have plumbed new depths. It was so in Maharana Pratapand in Ashoka, and it is already evident in Maharaja Ranjit Singh after barely 25 episodes. There is a villainess of a chachi, palace intrigues and all the good folk are irredeemably dense and are befooled all the time. And its last TRP was 0.4.

We are "like that only". After all, what is the Mahabharatha but extended melodrama, with over the top villains and incredibly stupid good people, dressed up as an epic and a purveyor of dharma? But there you can have genuine grandeur, and strong if wrong headed characters, good or bad. Here, in Chandra Nandini, everyone is a washout. That is the difference.

For Ekta, CN is money down the drain, and she will wind it up as soon as she can do it without losing face, seeing how much of her personal time and energy she invested in its launch.

Instead of such gimmicks, if it is one, wouldn't it be better if the story itself was revamped? Why not see at least for once if the people do not accept a proper script, nuanced acting and a memorable show? Why throw good money in such things?

Now that, my child, is asking for the moon!

As for the casting and suitability of this Baji, which you have expatiated on in my other thread here, it is a clever argument, but it won't wash.

The key question that has to be answered in the affirmative by every viewer is this: Would you want to see this boy again? The answer in 95% of the cases will be a resounding NO! That is it. Period.

Do also take a look at my response to Manasi above on this point.

Haan...it was flimsy 😆 I just thought for once I should give the casting directors the benefit of the doubt to balance out the karma I've incurred by mentally deriding them almost every time I come across a new show 😆

I've wanted to tell you this for a long time. Your style of expressing approval as well as displeasure is very similar to that of my mother's :))

Do also take a look at my response to Manasi above on this point. I did, and I enjoyed reading your take on shows, PHs and the mentality of the Indian audience 😆 I really hope some show impresses you enough to convince you to put up your magnificent analytical pieces again, aunty. I really miss your long, beautiful posts :(

I do not see which of the current shows I am watching - Peshwa Bajirao, Shani, Maharaja Ranjit Singh - I would ever want to analyse seriously. So, Ranjana my pet, that seems to be out for the present.

But if you have the patience for it, I would suggest that you watch the 5 week Jalandhar track in Devon ke Dev Mahadev, from the last week of April 2013 to June 5, 2013. If you plan to do that, I will send you the full set of my posts on that track, most of them on the FB page of the writer, Utkarsh Naithani. I was never so moved, emotionally, by anything else I have seen on TV before or since.

Oh yes, aunty! I would love to read your write-ups on the episodes😃. The Jalandhar-Vrinda-Shiva-Vishnu story had intrigued and touched me when I'd read it some years ago. I will try to watch the episodes too, but as of now, most of my spare time is being devoted to Prithvi's next chapter, and once the week starts, office work will stomp all energy out of me. So, watching any shows would be difficult :/ But I can read your posts aaraam se now and even while travelling to work. So, please send across their links. Then once I get some time to relax, I will try to watch the episodes as well :)
