The TRPs of Peshwa Bajirao: A sense of dismay

Folks,

I have been watching Peshwa Bajirao from Day 1 , on TV at 1930 hours so as to count for the TRPs - I live in Pune, which is the heart of Peshwa territory! - and I have recommended it from Day 2 to a number of my young friends in the IF who have also started watching it regularly.

I would have expected anyone who has seen even one episode to try and recruit new viewers, for it is a production that abounds in those rare virtues: authenticity and good sense. The art director has done a fabulous job, and every set, from the Bhat residence to the Chhatrapati's palace, looks period perfect and is refreshingly unostentatious. So are the costumes, which too is a very welcome departure from the glitz and tinsel, and the Christmas tree look for the women in most of our historicals and mythologicals. 😉

In short, Peshwa Bajirao is a superbly mounted and, for the most part, excellently cast and acted serial, and I am dismayed that the TRPs are still below 1. I am depending now on the show gaining viewers soon thru word of mouth.

I came in for the highly dependable Manish Wadhwa - wrongly mentioned on Page 1 of the forum index as Manish Choudhary!- but I have grown to like Tara Rani Saheb and, even more so, Radha Bai, a lot. The perfect grihani, Radha Bai is luminous as the model wife, mother, preceptor and drill sergeant, all rolled into one. I have rarely encountered a more appealing and credible female character on TV in recent years. She is a revelation!

However, I do wish they had chosen a less skinny and more athletic looking kid for Baji, someone with more presence, like young Siddharth Nigam. I could not understand their wasting Siddharth on a single scene as the young Shivaji! His young Ashoka in Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat was very appealing and very successful. He is also a national level gymnast, and he would have lent total credibility to Baji's scenes of derring do.

It was the same with Faisal Khan as Kunwar Pratap, who was very successful in Maharana Pratap, also a Sony show. A young star boosts the show right from the beginning. The present Baji looks unconvincing doing his stunts, and he is no great shakes at acting either. I suppose he will grow up and be replaced fairly soon, and one hopes they choose someone really good for the adult Bajirao.

The Bhat family scenes are wonderful, but one can tire of too much of the kiddie stuff with Baji's gang. However, I adore Baji's little sister and also Chimna. The latter kid is amazingly versatile - he played the young Salim in Jodha Akbar and the young Khurram in Siyasat, and here he is, as neat as you please with a chendi! He has a very expressive little face, which reflects even slight nuances beautifully.

All in all, this is one of the best serials, historical or otherwise, to have come on TV in recent years, and I do hope it survives and is not shelved midway because of the low TRPs That would be a very sad thing. So let us all keep our fingers crossed for the TRPs to somehow go up, and soon!

Aunty, you're here?! 😲🤗 But then, my own presence here is not usual 😆 I'm not a frequent visitor to this forum because I generally avoid forums of shows I follow😆. Somehow, for me, the intense discussion/criticism of every episode, surfeit of spoilers/news articles, and excessive debates/arguments tend to ruin the simple pleasure of watching a story unfold. So, these days, I visit the forums of this show and another show on the same channel only if I'm looking for written updates or if I wish to clarify any doubts.

How are you doing? I hope RA is so far away that it can't spot you without a high powered telescope 😆🤗

I loved your post, and our opinions match in almost every aspect. I avoid historical shows generally, but I'm unable to stop watching this particular one. I don't think I've seen such a magnificent show in many years now. The plotline, dialogues, characterisations, performances, art direction, costumes - the show shines in every aspect 👏 I simply adore Tara Rani Saheb and Radha Bai. How beautifully you've described the latter⭐️ - The perfect grihani, Radha Bai is luminous as the model wife, mother, preceptor and drill sergeant, all rolled into one. I have rarely encountered a more appealing and credible female character on TV in recent years. 👏

In both cases, I love the characters and the performances <3 The softness of one is masked by a veneer of steel, while the heart of a tigress beats underneath the other's gentle warmth. Magnificent women, both of them. I like Balaji Bhat too. He is a treat to watch. The kids...so far, I don't have any major grouses regarding the kid playing Bajirao 🤔 His acting could do with some polishing, but maybe he will improve with time. Baji's little sister is a darling! I feel like pulling her cheeks when I see her onscreen 😆

I'm not surprised by the TRPs :/ Shows on Sony TV rarely get good ratings even if they are superb. I do hope the TRPs increase though. It would be a shame if such a fantastic show doesn't get its due.

Aunty, if you put up any more posts on this forum, please send me a PM 😳

Ranjana my pet,

I am delighted to see you here, if only because of your refreshing comment, which I suspect will be the sole one on this thread!

No, I am not going to be writing here, on a regular or irregular basis. This was an unplanned, one off post, triggered by the dismay I felt when I came here to check on the TRPs. I probably should not have done it, as my fingers are still recovering from the last spasm that made me skip my Chandra Nandini post of Monday last, but I was so exasperated that discipline went out of the window!

It is not true that all shows on Sony get such dismal ratings. Maharana Pratap did very well for well over a year, so long as they had the young Kunwar Pratap. I think this Baji is a major drag on the show, he has zero presence and looks like a skinny street urchin. He is not my idea of the young Bajirao. I hope the show takes a leap soon.

This said, I loved your comments, as usual. Balaji Bhat is the wonderful Manish Wadhwa, whom I have admired a lot in Mahakumbh, and who I understand was a fabulous Chanakya in a truncated serial Chandragupta Maurya that was abandoned in 2012 when the channel folded up.

Yes, this show is fabulous. Not only in the scenes with the principals, what is more. Just look at the superb segment of Aurangzeb savagely dressing down Kamruddin!

OK, my poppet, I am off now. See you next Monday, or so I hope.

Affectionately,

Shyamala Aunty

I probably should not have done it, as my fingers are still recovering from the last spasm that made me skip my Chandra Nandini post of Monday last, but I was so exasperated that discipline went out of the window! Ohh do take care of your poor fingers and allow them to rest :( I hope they recover fully soon.

Oh ok, I don't know much about that show since I've maintained a distance from historicals for a long time now. I agree with the part about the screen presence. The charisma is missing. But I'm usually a little wary of leaps. In most shows I've watched so far, the choices of the casting directors have ended up being intolerable 🤢😆 and I'm also worried that the show will lose its spirit once the prem wala poison enters the bloodstream of the main characters :| 😆

When scenes have the ability to grab the viewer's attention even if the main characters are not a part of them, you know the show's writing is solid ⭐️

Glad to find you here 😛
I started watching the show on your recommendation, and I must say that I am really liking it a lot, though I may not agree with you as much about the young Baji.
I agree with you over Radhabai and Tara Rani Saheb, and I find Tara Rani very real. And Radhabai carries off those nauvaris so elegantly! And about little Bhiu - I just love her loads 😳
I stayed in Pune for 8 long years, and I can totally understand why you connect with the show. There are so many instances during the show when I felt - Oh why couldn't they just continue speaking in Marathi!
This show has so many things which have been done well - the costumes, the sets, the actors, the story. For any historical, politics, wars and mind games are a must. Though the wars have not yet been shown, the other two ingredients are present in a delicious measure. The creative producer of this show had previously helmed the older Chandragupta Maurya show which had Manish Wadhwa as Chanakya. I had already heard good reviews of the show, and now this show has not disappointed so far.
As far as the TRPs are concerned, other than JA, none of the shows that I watched or am watching have great TRPs. And many of these shows were/are very good. So I am used to this phenomenon. But that said, I feel Sony shows really don't attract huge TRPs. Their weekend segments fare quite well on the TRP charts but the daily shows, even with very good content compared to the other shows, fare badly. A lot of good shows have come up on this channel in the recent times (as well as in the recent past), but Sony never seems to find a larger audience and the shows get wrapped up prematurely. Like you, I too hope this show stays. I wish they had made it a finite series. Sustaining the standards that they have set is going to be difficult in a daily soap format.

🤗First of all thanks for recommending the show aunty.

I rarely visit this forum. Great to see you all of you here.😃
I love the sets, costumes, cast esp that of Tara Rani and Bhiu and Chimna in the show a lot. 👏
I wouldn't mind Baji being so skinny, but his voice is too shrill and doesn't suit his age or height. Siddharth would have been perfect.
Balaji and RadhaBai make a nice warm pair, the characters and the actors. 👏

Naagin with 4+ trps and PB below 1!!!!😡😭

You are very welcome, my pet.

I am not "here" in any sense of the term, this being a one off post, mostly a product of irritation at the TRPs. The Indian viewing public is beyond redemption!😡

I am not likely to come back here. I would have enough on my plate doing my Chandra Nandini posts without triggering a backlash from my RA!

In the recent episodes, the standout scenes have been those with Aurangzeb. He is extremely good. Manish Wadhwa is of course the Old Reliable, and at times he is inspired. Baji, my dear, has zero presence. In the film, Ranveer Singh, for all his generally unsophisticated image, had it in spades. And here, they have had the lack of discernment to cast Siddharth in a one scene cameo as the young Shivaji!😡

REQUEST FOR CURRENT TRPs OF PESHWA BAJIRAO

Can anyone tell me what the TRPs of Peshwa Bajirao have been in recent weeks?
I am not able to find the ratings anywhere, and I am seriously worried that if they linger around the last figure I saw, 0.6, the show might suddenly be axed. It is so good that it deserves a long run, but it is being given step-motherly treatment by Sony TV, perhaps because of the low ratings. In fact there is not a single repeat telecast after the main 7:30 pm one, which is unheard of!

Thank you so much, my dear Ranjana! How clever and resourceful you are! Is there a special page for the Sony TV shows?

Anyhow, one thing is clear. In comparison with the generality of the shows, Peshwa Bajirao's TRPs are dismal. But within Sony, it seems to be in quite a bit of company! To see that the channel toppers are the Kapil Sharma show and CID in its 20th year says it all, I suppose.

I am really concerned about the likely longevity of Peshwa Bajirao. Maharana Pratap, also a Sony show some 4 years ago, did very much better. Any, que sera sera, whatever will be will be!
