"Will give reward of 10 lakh, only when he does rest two-garland of old torn shoes and tour around the country." -

Shave off his head, said a cleric, enraged by Sonu Nigam's tweet on loud sermons. So the Bollywood playback singer did just that at a press conference he had himself tonsured by a celebrity hairstylist. He had called the press to talk about his tweets on Monday which led to an online furore and a fatwa being issued against him by the Kolkata-based cleric, Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi.

The Kolkata-based cleric, who issued a fatwa against Sonu Nigam, says he won't pay the singer the amount of Rs. 10 lakh till he fulfills the remaining two conditions, which are to wear two-garlands of old-torn shoes and then tour around the country. Sonu Nigam has not done all the things I asked for, two out of the three things remain unfulfilled,' said Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, the cleric who issued the fatwa.

remarks to come in the limelight, Quaderi, the vice president, West Bengal Minority United Council, said, Sonu Nigam could have spoken against azaan as a publicity stunt but I would never use him (Sonu) for my publicity.'

Following the 43-year-old-singer's controversial tweets against azaan', the Kolkata-based cleric issued a fatwa against the 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' singer on Tuesday, responding to which he got his head shaved on Wednesday.

Before hairstylist Aalim Hakim got into the act, Nigam stressed that his tweets were against the use of loudspeakers in morning sermons and not aimed at any particular religion.

"I only spoke against the use of loudspeakers. Everybody has a right to his opinion. I have the right to have an opinion and it should not be misconstrued. Loudspeakers are not a necessity; they are not a part of any religion," Nigam said.

His intention, he pointed out, was not to hurt anybody's sentiments. "If I have done anything wrong, please forgive me.

My intention was just to talk on a social topic and not a religious topic," he added.

The singer said it was wrong to focus on one particular tweet where he described the broadcasting of sermons on loudspeakers as 'gundagardi' (hooliganism). "People took one tweet of mine where I mentioned 'gundagardi' and ignored other tweets where I also talked about temples and gurudwaras," he said. Nigam said if anyone thought him -- a person who considered the singer, Mohammed Rafi, as his father, and whose guru was Ustad Gulam Mustafa Khan - as anti-Muslim, then "it is not my problem, but theirs."

People these days, he said, were either left wingers or right wingers, so a "secular" person like him was in a minority. "I am a secular person, a neutral person. You will rarely find people who are neutral. So, I am the minority here." After the conference got over, he went inside a room to get his head tonsured. Nigam had hinted in a tweet earlier in the day that he planned to shave off his head.

"Today at 2 pm Aalim will come to my place and shave my head. Keep your 10 lakhs ready, Maulavi," he had tweeted, tagging a new report on the fatwa. In a series of tweets on Monday, the 43-year-old had described as hooliganism the use of loudspeakers for broadcasting sermons and calls to prayers. "Gundagardi hai bus (it is hooliganism)," he had posted on Twitter.

Cleric Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi took exception to that, and announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh to anybody who would tonsure Nigam and garland him with a string of old shoes.

Nigam took the challenge up and called Hakim to the press conference a move that he also made public on Twitter.

The singer said he wanted to respond to the 'fatwa' in the language of love. "The one who is cutting my hair is a Muslim and I am a Hindu. There is no animosity. The same language of 'fatwa' can be communicated in a language of love," he said.

"I don't think my religion is the best and yours isn't. I don't believe in that. You have to fight fanaticism. You can't be quiet," he added. The cleric, however, is not satisfied with Nigam's gesture. "He only heard half of the fatwa. I had also mentioned a garland of old shoes," Syed Al Quaderi told a news channel.

sabse pehle to in violence invoking Fatwas ko criminal offense declare kar dena chahiye... IMO these so called Fatwas are no less than terrorism
... and then some people wonder why other people have Islamophobia ... say anything even remotely controversial, and pat comes a Fatwa 🤢

Oh I'm already afraid

they tell us that we don't know about Islam that's why we have so many misconceptions about it...probably they are right because the ones who already know and practice Islam aren't helping their own cause by their violence inducing Fatwas 😳

Fatwas are wrong n jus bcoz a maulvi says it doesnt become fatwa bt leave that if such maulvi's are d reason for islamophobia phir iss bhi gandhi fatwa/statement dene wali shivsena se hinduphobia hoti hai kya? Ya phir ye bhi sirf islam keliye hi hai!

@bold- so when does it actually become a fatwa? care to explain...cos till now I thought that maulvis must know a lot abt Islam being such learned people abt Islam and being muslim religious leaders and all 😳

speaking abt shivsena ... uske against government bhi lawful action leti hai whenver required, aur public se leke media tak raise a lot of hue and cry... whereas these Maulvis always escape unscathed despite whatever violence they provoke in the name of Islam and neither the followers of islam speak against it nor do they receive lawful repercussions for threatening people and provoking people for violence in the name of religion... and besides this, as far as I know, one of the many reasons for rise of shivsena was to counter the havoc wreaked by the so-called followers of islam in Mumbai.

P.S. - IMO inciting, provoking and encouraging violence in the name of saving religion is WRONG whether done by shivsena or the maluvis issuing fatwas ... or the jehadis fighting to save islam by killing kafirs

Agree with u violence is wrong in anymatter anyform!!
Im a muslim n it hurt me to see someone mocking my religion based on somebodies statement bash/mock that maulvi as u guys want bt why mock an entire religion by hurting d sentiment of ur fellow members !

Thing is that maulvis, shivsenas and the likes of them are polluting religion. Becuase of them people either loose faith on religion or start hating other religion.
Being too much sensitive and insecure of one's religion is harmful.
